This part of DS 781 presents data for the isopachs of the Punta Gorda to Point Arena, California, region. The vector data file is included in the "Isopachs_PuntaGordaToPointArena.zip," which is accessible from https://doi.org/10.5066/P9PNNI9H. As part of the USGS's California State Waters Mapping Project, a 50-m grid of sediment thickness for the seafloor within the 3-nautical mile limit between Punta Gorda and Point Arena was generated from seismic-reflection data collected between 2010 and 2012, and supplemented with geologic structure (fault) information following the methodology of Wong (2012). Synthetic seismograms provide a means to calibrate (groundtruth) seismic-reflection profiles to specific subsurface stratigraphic features observed in one-dimensional core and geophysical log data acquired from wells. Independently, Walker Marine Geophysical Company and Geokinetics Incorporated used velocity data from 14 borehole-compensated sonic logs as input for specialized geophysical software to generate 14 synthetic seismograms. Velocity data from the sonic logs were converted to a synthetic seismic trace using synthetic-seismogram production software, reproduced either 5 or 8 times, and placed side-by-side to resemble a seismic-reflection profile. For each well, the synthetic seismogram was used to relate...

In May 2017, we acquired high-resolution seismic profiles near three dam sites (Strathcona, Laodre and John Hart dams) located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Our goal was to measure seismic velocities (particularly Vs) at each dam site using body and surface waves. The data were analyzed using refraction tomography and multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW), especially in the upper 30 m of the subsurface. The analyzed data are presented in a separate report (Catchings and others, in review). We also recorded one hour of ambient noise (passive-source) data along most of the same profiles. This work was completed under the authority of a 2011 agreement relating to scientific and technical...

Bottom simulating reflections (BSRs) are seismic features that are imaged in marine sediments using high-energy, impulsive seismic sources such as air guns or generator-injector guns. BSRs often cut across sediment stratigraphy and are interpreted as marking the deepest depth at which gas hydrate can exist. Gas hydrate is a naturally occurring and widely distributed frozen form of water and gas (usually methane) stable at low temperatures (up to about 25 degrees Celsius [°C]) and intermediate pressures (those that usually correspond to greater than 500 meters water depth). BSRs have been mapped in all the world’s oceans, in inland seas (such as the Black Sea), and in Lake Baikal in Russia. This data release consists...

This data release contains data from five seismic-reflection surveys in New York’s East River between Governors Island and the Queensboro Bridge. Data are provided in the original proprietary data format, a SEGy data exchange format, and as a shape file of locations and depths to bedrock. Depths to bedrock were derived from the seismic signal travel time and an assumed speed of sound of 5,000 feet/second.

High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. Seismic data collected during this survey can help to define the rates of deposition within the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, which are the main inflows to Lake Powell. These new data are intended to improve water budget management decisions that affect the natural and recreational resources of the reservoir. Multibeam echosounder bathymetry and...

In September 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, conducted high-resolution geophysical mapping and sediment sampling to determine the distribution of historical mine tailings on the floor of Lake Superior. Large amounts of waste material from copper mining, locally known as “stamp sands,” were dumped into the lake in the early 20th century, with wide-reaching consequences that have continued into the present. Mapping was focused offshore of the town of Gay on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, where ongoing erosion and re-deposition of the stamp sands has buried miles of native, white-sand beaches. Stamp sands are also encroaching onto Buffalo Reef, a large...

In June of 2021, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a high-resolution seismic survey at Winters, California. Seismic data were acquired using a DTCC SmartSolo 3-component nodal seismograph system ("node"), which continuously recorded at 2000 samples per second. Nodes were deployed 5 meters apart from west-southwest to east-northeast to create an approximately 800-m-long linear profile. P-wave data were generated primarily using a 500-lb (227-kg) accelerated weight drop at each recording station. In areas of difficult access, P-wave data were generated using a sledgehammer striking a steel plate. S-wave data were generated using a sledgehammer horizontally striking an aluminum block anchored to the ground. Every...

In June of 2011, the U.S. Geological Survey acquired high-resolution P- and S-wave seismic data across the mapped (Schussler, 1906) trace of the San Andreas Fault zone at San Andreas Lake in unincorporated San Mateo County, California. Our seismic survey consisted of seismic reflection, refraction, and guided-wave data along a 60-m-long profile. To acquire the reflection and refraction data we co-located shots and geophones, spaced every meter along the profile. We used 59 SercelTM L40A, P-wave (40-Hz vertical-component) geophones (sensitivity of 22.34 volts/meter/second) to record 59 P-wave shots and 59 SercelTM L28-LBH, S-wave (4.5-Hz horizontal-component) geophones (sensitivity of 31.3 volts/meter/second)to record...

The present-day distribution of subsea permafrost beneath high-latitude continental shelves has implications for sea level rise and climate change since the Last Glacial Maximum (~20,000 years ago). Because permafrost can be spatially associated with gas hydrate (which may be thermodynamically stable within the several hundred meters above and below the base of permafrost), the contemporary distribution of subsea permafrost also has implications for the persistence of permafrost-associated gas hydrate beneath shallow waters at high latitudes, particularly on margins that were not glaciated at the Last Glacial Maximum. On the U.S. Beaufort Sea margin offshore northern Alaska, researchers have sometimes assumed that...

High resolution bathymetric, sea-floor backscatter, and seismic-reflection data were collected offshore of southeastern Louisiana aboard the research vessel Point Sur on May 19-26, 2017, in an effort to characterize mudflow hazards on the Mississippi River Delta front. As the initial field program of a research cooperative between the U.S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, and other Federal and academic partners, the primary objective of this cruise was to assess the suitability of sea-floor mapping and shallow subsurface imaging tools in the challenging environmental conditions found across delta fronts (for example, variably distributed water column stratification and widespread biogenic...

In June of 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a high-resolution seismic survey at Edwards Air Force Base in Kern County, California. Seismic data were acquired using a DTCC SmartSolo 3-component nodal seismometer system ("node"), which continuously recorded at 2000 samples per second. Nodes were deployed 5 meters apart along a southwest-northeast trend to create an approximately 3-km-long linear profile. P-wave data were generated primarily using a 500-lb (227-kg) accelerated weight drop at each recording station. P-wave data were also generated at every 40 stations using downhole explosions, and fault-zone-guided-wave data were generated using explosive sources that were placed within a mapped trace of...

Geophysical and geological survey data were collected off Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in May and July 2016. Approximately 130 linear kilometers of subbottom (seismic-reflection) and 234-kilohertz interferometric sonar (bathymetric and backscatter) data were collected along with sediment samples, sea floor photographs, and (or) video at 26 sites within the geophysical survey area. Sediment grab samples were collected at 19 of the 26 sampling sites and video and (or) photographic imagery of the sea floor were taken at all 26 sites. These survey data are used to characterize the sea floor by identifying sediment-texture, seabed morphology, and underlying geologic structure and stratigraphy. Data collected...
