The need to monitor change in sagebrush steppe is urgent due to the increasing impacts of climate change, shifting fire regimes, and management practices on ecosystem health. Remote sensing provides a cost-effective and reliable method for monitoring change through time and attributing changes to drivers. We report an automated method of mapping rangeland fractional component cover over a large portion of the Northern Great Basin, USA, from 1986 to 2016 using a dense Landsat imagery time series. 2012 was excluded from the time-series due to a lack of quality imagery. Our method improved upon the traditional change vector method by considering the legacy of change at each pixel. We evaluate cover trends stratified...

A raster identifying areas that met the criteria to be priority habitat before a fire disturbance occurred. This file is binary, a value of 1 indicates the pixel represents pre-fire priority habitat, a value of 0 indicates the pixel did not meet the criteria of selection, survival, and space-use to be considered pre-fire priority habitat.
Probability map of harvester ant occurrence (high abundance) in relation to vegetation, abiotic, and anthropogenic features. These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release.

Rasters representing Greater Sage-grouse (hereafter sage-grouse) survival indices and categories during the nesting, early brood, and late brood life stages. A higher pixel value corresponds to a better chance of survival. The four categories of survival are very low, low, moderate, and high. We have also included rasters representing source and sink habitats for sage-grouse. Habitat sinks occur in areas of maladaptive habitat selection, where there are relatively high levels of selection, but low chance of survival. Source habitats were defined as any pixel that supported both high selection and high survival for a given life stage. Importantly, a given pixel was only considered source habitat if it was not sink...

These data (all data tables for the data release) represent a suite of biotic and abiotic variables that characterized plant communities and the geologic, geomorphic, edaphic, climatic, and land use history context in which distinct plant communities occur. In 2009, the National Park Service's Inventory and Monitoring program for the Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) began measuring vegetation cover and site characteristics at monitoring plots stratified across different vegetation types within national parks on the Colorado Plateau. NCPN biologists remeasured vegetation cover at these plots in a rotating panel over the following decade. In 2019, U. S. Geological Survey geologists and soil scientists collected/compiled...

This raster dataset quantifies the relative flow patterns of structural sagebrush connectivity in the sagebrush biome at 270-meter resolution. Connectivity was calculated using an omnidirectional circuit-based algorithm, with sources, targets, and conductance based on sagebrush fractional component from the RCMAP sagebrush products for 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. Normalized cumulative current density was used to represent relative flow of connectivity and binned into 3 relative flow classes (impeded, diffuse, and channelized flow). We calculated the relative flow temporal trends for channelization and impedance between 1985 and 2020 to identify areas that were becoming more channelized or...

The RCMAP (Rangeland Condition Monitoring Assessment and Projection) dataset quantifies the percent cover of rangeland components across the western U.S. using Landsat imagery from 1985-2020. The RCMAP product suite consists of eight fractional components: annual herbaceous, bare ground, herbaceous, litter, non-sagebrush shrub, perennial herbaceous, sagebrush, shrub and rule-based error maps including the temporal trends of each component. Several enhancements were made to the RCMAP process relative to prior generations. We used an updated version of the 2016 base training data, with a more aggressive forest mask and reduced shrub and sagebrush cover bias in pinyon-juniper woodlands. We pooled training data in areas...

The RCMAP (Rangeland Condition Monitoring Assessment and Projection) dataset quantifies the percent cover of rangeland components across the western U.S. using Landsat imagery from 1985-2021. The RCMAP product suite consists of nine fractional components: annual herbaceous, bare ground, herbaceous, litter, non-sagebrush shrub, perennial herbaceous, sagebrush, shrub, and tree, in addition to the temporal trends of each component. Several enhancements were made to the RCMAP process relative to prior generations. First, we have trained time-series predictions directly from 331 high-resolution sites collected from 2013-2018 from Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) instead of using the 2016 “base” map as an intermediary....

These data represent an resource selection function (RSF) for translocated sage-grouse in North Dakota during the brooding season. Human enterprise has led to large‐scale changes in landscapes and altered wildlife population distribution and abundance, necessitating efficient and effective conservation strategies for impacted species. Greater sage‐grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter sage‐grouse) are a widespread sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) obligate species that has experienced population declines since the mid‐1900s resulting from habitat loss and expansion of anthropogenic features into sagebrush ecosystems. Habitat loss is especially evident in North Dakota, USA, on the northeastern fringe of sage‐grouse’...

These data show multilocus genotypes, banding age, and territory for coastal cactus wrens (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) sampled in coastal southern California between 2009 and 2019. These data support the following publication: Vandergast, A.G., Kus, B.E., Smith, J.G. and Mitelberg, A., 2022. Recent declines in genetic diversity with limited dispersal among coastal cactus wren populations in San Diego County, California. The RCMAP (Rangeland Condition Monitoring Assessment and Projection) dataset quantifies the percent cover of rangeland components across western North America using Landsat imagery from 1985-2023. The RCMAP product suite consists of ten fractional components: annual herbaceous, bare ground, herbaceous, litter, non-sagebrush shrub, perennial herbaceous, sagebrush, shrub, tree, and shrub height in addition to the temporal trends of each component. Several enhancements were made to the RCMAP process relative to prior generations. First, high-resolution training was revised using an improved neural-net classifier and modelling approach. These data serve as foundation to the RCMAP approach. The training database was...
