Long-term changes of a copepod community (1957-1996) in a subtropical Chinese lake densely stocked with planktivorous filter-feeding silver and bighead carp
Reliability of urohyal bone of silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val. 1844) for age determination.
Ecological effects of long-term pressure of phytophagous and seston-feeding fish on the structure and functioning of the shallow Lake Warniak (Mazurian Lakeland, Poland)
This dataset includes information from ichthyoplankton sampling for silver carp and bighead carp collected from three main reaches in the Upper Mississippi River Basin, including the La Grange, Peoria, Starved Rock, and Marseilles reaches of the Illinois River, Pool 20 of Mississippi River, and the St. Croix River. Data include the number of bigheaded carp eggs and larvae identified using traditional manual sorting techniques, and genetic data derived from quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 4 bigheaded carp markers (SCTM4/5 and BHTM1/2) that were used to identify the amount of DNA in ichthyoplankton tow samples. These data provide information for natural resource agencies and managers who could use this qPCR screening...

Acoustic deterrence of bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) to a broadband sound stimulus: Data
Recent studies have shown the potential of acoustic deterrents against invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). This study examined the phonotaxic response of the bighead carp (H. nobilis) to pure tones (500– 2000 Hz) and playbacks of broadband sound from an underwater recording of a 100 hp outboard motor (0.06–10 kHz) in an outdoor concrete pond (10 × 5 × 1.2 m) at the U.S. Geological Survey Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center in La Crosse, WI. The number of consecutive times the fish reacted to sound from alter- nating locations at each end of the pond was assessed. Bighead carp were relatively indifferent to the pure tones with median consecutive responses ranging from 0 to 2 reactions away...
Effects of pure Microcystin LR and biomass of blue-green algae on selected immunological indices of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix Val.)
Data for Evaluation of broadband sound as an acoustical deterrent to deter the movement of silver carp and bighead carp in an outside pond
The effectiveness of an acoustic barrier to deter the movement of silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, and bighead carp, H. noblis, was evaluated. A pond (10 m, x 5 m x 1.2 m) was divided in half by a concrete-block barrier with a channel (1 m across) allowing fish access to each side. Underwater speakers were placed on each side of the barrier opening and an outboard motor noise (broadband sound; 0.06 – 10 kHz) was broadcast to repel carp that approached within 1 m of the channel. Broadband sound was effective at reducing the number of successful crossings in schools of silver carp, bighead carp and a combined school. Repulsion rates were 82.5% (silver carp), 93.7% (bighead carp) and 90.5% (combined). This...
Envrionmental DNA data for Refinement of eDNA as an early monitoring tool at the landscape-level: Data
These environmental DNA data and corresponding water quality data were collected and analyzed by the Fish and Wildlife Service in 2017. The samples were collected from 4 sites in pools 17 and 18 in the Upper Mississippi River on 3 sampling trips. The data was used to study occupancy modeling of eDNA data and determine optimal sampling effort required for reliable detection of invasive Bighead Carp and Silver Carp in streams with similar attributes at the Mississippi River.
Data for "Comparison of size, terminal fall velocity and density of bighead, silver, and grass carp eggs for use in drift modeling"
Invasive Asian carps established in the United States spawn in turbulent water of rivers and their eggs and early larvae develop while drifting in the current. The eggs are slightly denser than water and are held in suspension by water turbulence. The eggs are believed to perish if they settle before hatching. It is thus possible to use egg drift modeling to assess the capability of a river to support survival of Asian carp eggs. Data to populate such models include the physical properties of the assessed rivers, and information on egg size, density, and terminal fall velocity (sinking rates). Herein, we present the physical characteristics of the eggs as a function of post fertilization time. We recorded mean egg...
Using Pharyngeal Teeth and Chewing Pads to Predict Juvenile Silver Carp Total Length in the La Grange Reach, Illinois River: Data
Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are an invasive species in the Mississippi River Basin; understanding their vulnerability to predation as juveniles may inform control by native predators and predator stocking. Digestion of silver carp recovered from diets makes it difficult to determine the size classes most vulnerable to predation by native fishes. The objective of this study was to determine if total length of silver carp can be predicted from the size of their chewing pad, pharyngeal teeth, and pharyngeal arch, the structures most often found intact in diets. Juvenile silver carp (n=136: <180 mm) were collected using 60 hz pulsed- DC electrofishing and mini fyke nets in 2014 and 2015 from the La Grange...
