This data set is a digital soil survey and generally is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The map data are in a soil survey area extent format and include a detailed, field verified inventory of soils and miscellaneous areas that normally occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. A special soil features...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release presents the geospatial data used to assess the hydrologic and soil resources and the potential effects from grazing, infrastructure, and land-management decisions in the Bureau of Land Management Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, New Mexico. Publicly available and previously unpublished data were used to assess these resources and effects and to identify data gaps in the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument area. Data created from already published data such as landform, infiltration, geology, and grazing potential coverages are also included in this data release. These data support the following publication: Blake, J.M., Mitchell, A.C.,...

Reserve design is a process that must address many ecological, social, and political factors to successfully identify parcels of land in need of protection to sustain wildlife populations and other natural resources. Making land acquisition choices for a large, terrestrial protected area is difficult because it occurs over a long timeframe and may involve consideration of future conditions such as climate and urbanization changes. Decision makers need to consider factors including: order of parcel purchasing given budget constraints, future uncertainty, potential future landscape-scale changes from urbanization, and climate. In central Florida, two new refuges and the expansion of a third refuge are in various stages...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release presents the geospatial data used to assess the hydrologic and soil resources of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. The USGS, in cooperation with the BLM, conducted a study to assess the hydrologic and soil resources and potential effects of infrastructure and grazing within the monument area. Publicly available data as well as data provided by the BLM were used to assess these resources and effects and to identify data gaps in the monument area. The input and output files for the Rangeland Hydrologic Erosion Model are also included in this data release. This model was...
This map features the Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) by the United States Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service. It also shows data that was developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey and supersedes the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) dataset published in 1994. SSURGO digitizing duplicates the original soil survey maps. This level of mapping is designed for use by landowners, townships, and county natural resource planning and management. The user should be knowledgeable of soils data and their characteristics. The smallest scale map shows the Global Soil Regions map by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. This map features...

Soils is part of the National Cooperative Soil Survey, an effort of Federal and State agencies, universities, and professional societies to deliver science-based soil information. This website includes a vast array of information and data access tools for soils including Web Soil Survey, Soil Data Viewer, and the Soil Survey Extent Mapping Tool.
The link between soil science and geology is personified in the American father and daughter: soil surveyor William Edgar Tharp (1870–1959) and oceanographic cartographer Marie Tharp (1920–2006). From 1904 to 1935, W.E. Tharp mapped soils in 14 states for the US Department of Agriculture, and campaigned during the late 1920s–early 1930s to raise awareness of the high rates of soil erosion from croplands. The lifestyle of the federal soil surveyor in the United States during the early 20th century involved frequent household moves, and it played a formative role in Marie Tharp’s childhood. Her path to a career in geology was molded by this family experience, by mentors encountered in the classroom, and by social...
We have recently added a KML export function to our online soil survey ( Soil-Web ). The Google Earth icon is displayed at map scales of 1:35000 or larger, and clicking on it will create a KML file containing the SSURGO polygons within the current viewport. The KML file contains labeled centroids, with links to the map unit descriptions which are normally found on Soil-Web. You will need a current version of Google Earth in order to take advantage of the KML produced by our website. To use this feature, zoom into a region of interest (at a scale of 1:35000 or larger) and click on the small Google Earth icon in the tool bar. If you have Google Earth installed, you may be prompted by the web browser software...
