Potential Evapotranspiration (PET): These data represent decadal mean totals of potential evapotranspiration estimates (mm). The file name specifies the decade the raster represents. For example, a file named pet_mean_mm_decadal_MPI_ECHAM5_A1B_annual_2000-2009.tif represents the decade spanning 2000-2009. The data were generated by using the Hamon equation and output from ECHAM5, a fifth generation general circulation model created by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg Germany. Data are at 2km x 2km resolution, and all data are stored in geotiffs. Calculations were performed using R 2.12.1 and 2.12.2 for Mac OS Leopard, and data were formatted into geotiffs using the raster and rgdal packages. Users...
The Integrated Ecosystem Model for Alaska project (IEM) uses down-scaled climate models as the drivers of ecosystem change to produce forecasts of future fire, vegetation, permafrost and hydrology regimes at a resolution of 1km. This effort is the first to model ecosystem change on a statewide scale, using climate change input as a major driving variable. The objectives of the IEM project are as follows; to better understand and predict effects of climate change and other stressors on landscape level physical and ecosystem processes, and to provide support for resource conservation planning. The IEM will provide resource managers with a decision support tool to visualize future landscapes in Alaska. Model outputs...

This raster, created in 2010, is output from the Geophysical Institute Permafrost Lab (GIPL) model and represents simulated active layer thickness (ALT) in meters averaged across a decade. The file name specifies the decade the raster represents. For example, a file named ALT_1980_1989.tif represents the decade spanning 1980-1989. Cell values represent simulated maximum depth (in meters) of thaw penetration (for areas with permafrost) or frost penetration (for areas without permafrost). If the value of the cell is positive, the area is underlain by permafrost and the cell value specifies the depth of the seasonally thawing layer above permafrost. If the value of the cell is negative, the ground is only seasonally...

This dataset contains .csv files of unprocessed, raw, soil moisture, soil temperature, and air temperature data. This data is collected annually from sensors as part of the Active Layer Network. Soil temperature and moisture sensors were installed ten centimeters below the soil surface and at the maximum depth of the active layer. An air temperature sensor was installed in the center of each site. Sensors are set to collect data at 30 minute intervals, though in some years at some locations this interval has differed. Those sites and years are as follows: Arctic Village soil sensors were set to a 15 minute interval in 2013 and 2014 as shown in the 2014 and 2015 files; Chevak soil sensors were set to a 15 minute...

Disturbance disrupts the balance between gross primary productivity and respiration, resulting in a net C loss for some time after a stand-replacing fire. However, our understanding of this process is based on a limited number of studies. Ecosystem C recovery post-fire must be explicitly and carefully examined in order to generate accurate predictions of C cycle impacts of future wildfires and change in fire regimes. Montane ponderosa and lodgepole pine forests, either single-species stands or mixed, dominate surface area in the Southern Rockies. These species have drastically different relationships with wildfire; the current narrative portrays ponderosa pine as accustomed to low-severity surface fires with low...
In June 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collected geophysical measurements to help evaluate the suitability of a proposed landfill site for disposing mine-waste materials in Fredericktown, Missouri. Geophysical methods were used to evaluate and characterize the unconsolidated sediment (i.e., regolith) above the crystalline bedrock as well as determine depth bedrock. Land-based geophysical methods included frequency domain electromagnetic induction (FDEM), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio passive seismic (HVSR), and shear-wave seismic refraction. Water-borne methods included FDEM surveys to characterize...
Map of the Hulahula River Area and location of observation sites. This focal watershed provides the greatest opportunity to characterize conditions within and fluxes from the Brooks Range Ecoregion. Though the Foothills region isextensive, the watersheds narrow as they cross the Coastal Plain in the easternpart of the North Slope. Inset shows the location of the seven TEON focal watersheds. These raster datasets represent output from the Boreal ALFRESCO (Alaska Frame Based Ecosystem Code) model. Boreal ALFRESCO operates on an annual time step, in a landscape composed of 1 x 1 km pixels, a scale appropriate for interfacing with mesoscale climate and carbon models. The last four digits of the file name specifies the year represented by the raster. For example a file named Age_years_historical_1990.tif represents the year 1990. Cell values represent the age of vegetation in years since last fire, with zero (0) indicating burned area in that year. Coverage of this dataset includes much of the state of Alaska (but does exclude Southeastern AK, Kodiak Island, portions of the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian...
This raster, created in 2010, is output from the Geophysical Institute Permafrost Lab (GIPL) model and represents simulated mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) in Celsius, averaged across a decade, at the base of active layer or at the base of the seasonally frozen soil column. The file name specifies the decade the raster represents. For example, a file named MAGT_1980_1989.tif represents the decade spanning 1980-1989. Cell values represent simulated mean annual ground temperature (degree C) at the base of the active layer (for areas with permafrost) or at the base of the soil column that is seasonally frozen (for areas without permafrost). If the value of the cell is negative, the area has permafrost and the...

The West Fork of Dall Creek is located ~100km southwest of Coldfoot, AK along the Dalton Highway, south of the Brooks Range. The West Fork of Dall Creek is composed of unburned black spruce forest with a burn scar from the 2004 Dall City Fire. HOBO Tidbit v2 temperature data loggers that recorded soil temperature were installed in the unburned black spruce forest adjacent to the burn scar on 5/10/2017 and removed on 6/26/2018. Data were collected from depths of 10, 30, 50, and 70 cm.
We provide a collection of data reflecting estimates of soil-climate properties (moisture, temperature, and regimes) based on climate normals (1981-2010). Specifically, we provide estimates for soil moisture (monthly, seasonal, and annual), trends of spring and growing season soil moisture (Theil-Sen estimates), soil temperature and moisture regimes (STMRs; discrete classes defined by United States Department of Agriculture [USDA] Natural Resources Conservation Service [NRCS]), seasonal Thornthwaite moisture index (TMI; precipitation minus PET), and seasonality of TMI and soil moisture (30-meter rasters). Moisture values were estimated using our spatial implementation of the Newhall simulation model that relies...
Map of the Agashashok River Area and location of proposed observation sites (numbered circles). This focal watershed is in the southwest corner of the Arctic LCC and largely drains the Brooks Range ecoregion with a small portion of the lower basin in the Kobuk Ridges and Valleys ecoregion. The braided character of the lower river prevents us from suggesting a long term gaging station in that location. Inset shows the location of the seven TEON focal watersheds.
