These data are daily summary checklists of all bird species observed at U.S. Geological Survey, Alaska Science Center (ASC) field camps in Southwest Alaska. Data include species observation details such as observers, dates, location, and number of individuals seen. Included are data from three camps along the Alaska Peninsula, in and around Izembek National Wildlife Refuge ("Izembek NWR", "Cold Bay", and "Neumann Island") during field seasons: 1986-1993.

Individual species often drive habitat restoration action; however, management under this paradigm may negatively affect non-target species. Prioritization frameworks which explicitly consider benefits to target species while minimizing consequences for non-target species may drastically improve management strategies. Synopsis: This document details the Milk River Basin project, designed to produce innovative approaches to multi-species management in Southern Alberta. The Milk River basin contains a variety of ‘sensitive’, ‘at risk’, and ‘may be at risk’ species. The process of prioritizing the landscape for conservation and stewardship was driven by species inventories to identify known locations, and Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) models to delimit suitable key habitat for the 17 selected species. A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center visited sites nine times throughout the breeding season (late May to mid-July) to record counts of grassland birds. Surveyors applied North American Breeding Bird Survey methodology to obtain counts at On-, Near-, and Off-road Stops, but unlike the North American Breeding Bird Survey, which features a single survey at each site, three replicate surveys were conducted on back-to-back-to-back days during each survey period to facilitate estimation of detection and occupancy probabilities. Northeast Montana represents critical, core breeding habitat for many of our most imperiled grasslandsongbird species. USFWS has been working cross-programmatically and with a broad array of externalpartnerships in this region to maintain and enhance habitat for these species. However, to date we havenot adequately monitored birds response to these interventions to determine if and how much we arebenefiting populations. This project would provide that capability for at least a five-year period.

Synopsis: This study examined the reluctance of different birds species to cross habitat gaps in a fragmented forest landscape. Researchers induced birds in the post-fledging period to cross gaps of varying widths and to choose between routes through woodland or across open areas by attracting them with recorded chickadee mobbing calls. Overall, birds were twice as likely to travel through 50 m of woodland than they were to travel through 50 m of open gap areas to reach the recording. When given a choice of traveling through woodland or across a gap, the majority of birds preferred woodland routes, even when they were three times longer than shortcuts in the open.
