Data are time series of substrate grain size, remotely sensed water column turbidity, and measures of abundance (e.g., density, percent cover) of the nearshore subtidal (3-17 m depth) benthic community (vegetation, invertebrates, and fish) collected before (2008-2011) and during dam removal (2012-2014).
This Benthic Invertebrate Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the benthic invertebrates sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), the invertebrate samples were taken from sediments remaining from the sediment analysis. Identification of the invertebrates was completed by the same invertebrate taxonomist for both the 1998-2000 evaluation and 1986-87 historical evaluation (Smith et al. 1994) for increased consistency. Oligochaetes were identified to species if possible, chironomids were identified to genus, as adult specimens are needed for specific identification, and other taxa...
The data set consists of data collected in 1995, 1996, and 1997 in wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota and South Dakota. The data were summarized and used in the analysis for two publications in peer-reviewed journals. The data consists of one data set that includes bird abundance and richness data, wetland class (temporary, seasonal, semipermanent, permanent, alkali), and wetland type (private or federal). In conjunction with surveys of wetland birds, the following wetland variables also were recorded: wetland size, date, local-level habitat variables (percent coverage of open water, emergent vegetation, wet meadow, and shoreline/mudflat), and landscape-level habitat variables (percent cover...

These data consist of larval fish and water profile data collected with a nearshore to offshore transect approach at 9 transects throughout Lake Huron. Larval fish and their stomach contents were identified, enumerated, and measured (if possible) using a dissecting microscope. These data were used to calculate densities of potential fish prey items (what is available in the environment) and compare that to what the fishes ate for selectivity analysis. Larval fish age estimation based on daily growth rings from otoliths was also conducted. These data are in raw form. The water profile data were collected using a bathythermograph and bin-averaged at the 1 m level. Environmental prey data are available at the following...
This data set consists of data collected during 2005-2007, 2010, and 2015 at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa, USA that were used in the analysis in support of the article titled "Toward improving pollinator habitat: Reconstructing prairies with high forb diversity," which has been submitted to Natural Areas Journal. We compared pollinator habitat, in terms of planted forb richness, cover, and phenology, cover of planted grasses, and persistence of exotic species 10-years post-planting of reconstructions with 58 species (extra-high), 34 species (high), 20 species (medium) and 10 species (low) planted at the same time using the same fields, methods, and overall seeding rate. Twelve replicates of three...
This dataset includes benthic algae community composition data from three sites in the upper White River Basin, Colorado, in 2022. Benthic algae were identified as genus or species, and biomass and biovolume were provided for taxa.U.S. Geological Survey completed data collection in upper White River Basin in cooperation with the White River Conservation District. Data collection was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey Water Mission Area as part of the Next Generation Water Observing System Upper Colorado River project.
Longstanding taxonomic uncertainties have limited conservation efforts for species currently assigned to the freshwater mussel genus Alasmidonta. Here, we present mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data needed to assess the genus- and species-level taxonomy of Alasmidonta. These molecular data allowed us to test whether cryptic diversity exists within Alasmidonta and whether A. triangulata and A. arcula are distinct species. Details associated with specimens and DNA sequence data are provided here to provide a foundation for future research on Alasmidonta and give conservation agencies greater confidence in the findings of our work.

This portion of the data release presents fish abundance data from samples collected in the Elwha River estuary, Washington, in 2006, 2007, 2013, and 2014 (no associated USGS Field Activities numbers because data were collected predominantly by biologists from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe). We used the Puget Sound beach seining protocol (Simenstad and others, 1991) to sample fish populations in the Elwha River estuary complex. The beach seine was 38 m long x 2 m deep, with a 2 m x 2 m bag in the center of the net; mesh size was 3.18 mm, 6.35 mm, and 31.75 mm, for the bag, center panel, and wings, respectively. The seine net was deployed from bank to bank by a small skiff and then pulled on shore. The number of...

This portion of the data release presents terrestrial invertebrate abundance data from samples collected in emergent and shrub vegetation along the edge of the Elwha River estuary, Washington, in 2007 and 2013 (no associated USGS Field Activities numbers because data were collected predominantly by biologists from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe). We deployed terrestrial insect fallout traps at ten locations in the east estuary, five replicates each in shrub and emergent (littoral) vegetation habitats. Clear, rectangular traps (2,400 cm2 in 2007 and 3,526 cm2 in 2013) were filled with 5 cm of filtered soapy water and deployed for 72 hours. Invertebrate counts from 2013 were standardized to the 2007 bin size to account...

These are genetic data collected from replicated samples of 21 Enteroctopus (E. dofleini or a cryptic lineage) in Prince William Sound Alaska to evaluate tissue type, DNA extraction method, and time until analyses are completed on data reliability. Data collected from all samples include two microsatellites identified as possible lineage indicators, and nine microsatellite loci previously identified as polymorphic in both lineages. DNA sequence data from 528 bp of the octopine dehydrogenase (OCDE) gene were also collected.

Data collection was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey Water Mission Area as part of the Next Generation Water Observing System Upper Colorado River project.
This Sediment Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the sediments sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), sediment collections were a composite of at least five randomly selected samples collected from each site. Per an internal summary report, sediment samples were collected using a stainless steel Eckman dredge. Analytical methods and QA/QC were directed by the Patuxent Analytical Control Facility (PACF) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Per Dora Passino-Reader, the Geochemical & Environmental Research Group at Texas A&M University, College Station performed the analytical chemistry...
This dataset supports the inclusion of Anodontoides radiatus in the genus Strophitus, introducing the binomial Strophitus radiatus. These data also provide strong support for paraphyly in Strophitus and advocate the resurrection of the genus Pseudodontoides to represent the binomials Pseudodontoides connasaugaensis and Pseudodontoides subvexus.

This dataset includes stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values for the inner tail retrices of three subspecies of barn swallow (Hirundo rustica rustica, H. r. tytleri, and H. r. gutturalis). Sampling was conducted in Russia (summer 2013), China (summer 2014), Mongolia (summer 2014), Japan (summer 2014), and western China (summer 2015) using mist nets. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data are useful proxies for diet and at broad spatial scales have the potential to constrain geographic distributions at the sub-population level. These data were used in tandem with molecular genetics to explore the extent to which a migratory divide explains the strength of reproductive isolation. There are two files in this dataset:...
Due to a gap in information on regeneration of hard-mast trees in the floodplain, interpretation was completed of existing 8“/pixel aerial imagery delineating a detailed hardwood forest spatial dataset within the floodplain forest of the Fish and Wildlife Upper Mississippi National Wildlife & Fish Refuge, McGregor District. The detailed map of bottomland hardwoods will allow for the identification of existing habitat and assess bottomland hardwood tree patterns to enable management of these areas.

Data are time series of substrate grain size, vertical relief, and measures of abundance (e.g., density, percent cover) of the nearshore subtidal (5-16 m depth) benthic community (vegetation, invertebrates, and fish) collected before (2008-2011), during (2012-2014), and after dam removal (2015-2022).
This portion of the data release presents aquatic invertebrate abundance data from samples collected in the Elwha River estuary, Washington, in 2007 and 2013 (no associated USGS Field Activities numbers because data were collected predominantly by biologists from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe). Replicate benthic samples were collected at 18 locations throughout the estuary complex using a petite Ponar grab sampler (appx. 2400 mL sample) and sorted through a 500-micron sieve. Samples were fixed in 10 percent formalin for 3 to 5 days before being transferred to 70 percent ethanol until processing. Individuals were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic resolution, but are grouped according to insect Orders in...

This Fish Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the fish communities sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), fish were sampled for identification and measurement of length and weight. Identification of fish were done by the same biologists for both the 1998-2000 data and the 1986-87 historical data (Smith et al. 1994). Any fish difficult to identify were preserved in buffered formalin for later identification. If large numbers of a particular species were collected the first thirty fish were measured and weighed; remaining fish were individually measured and group weighed. All...

The widespread distribution of Strophitus undulatus, as well as high intraspecific morphological variation, has led previous authors to doubt the taxon is representative of a single species. Here we provide detailed information for all the freshwater mussels and associated DNA sequence data utilized to test species boundaries in S. undulatus. These molecular data, in combination with morphological data and results from species distribution models, support the recognition of an undescribed freshwater mussel species endemic to streams along the Edwards Plateau in the Colorado River basin in Texas, USA.
