To meet their permit requirements under the water-temperature Total Maximum Daily Load for the Willamette River, Oregon Association of Clean Water Agencies members need to understand the potential thermal effects of various heat-mitigation alternatives for their treated wastewater discharges to the Willamette River, such as the installation of cooling towers that would decrease the temperature of their effluent. CE-QUAL-W2, a two-dimensional, hydrodynamic water quality model, has been used to investigate temperature and heat patterns in the Willamette River, the downstream effects of dam operations, and other anthropogenic effects on stream temperature such as effluent discharge from waste-water treatment plants....

These data describe the percent of cropland harvested as wheat, corn, and soybean within each basin (basins 1-8, see accompanying shapefiles). Data are available for other crops; however, these three were chosen because wheat is a traditional crop that has been grown for a long time in the Basin and corn and soybeans have increased in recent times because of wetter conditions, the demand for biofuels, and advances in breeding short-season, drought-tolerant crops. The data come from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Census of Agriculture (COA) and have estimates for 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012. Years with missing data were estimated estimated using multivariate imputation...

The Reaction-Transport Modeling Group provides environmental managers and policy makers with the understanding and tools needed to predict how decisions made today can improve the amount of clean water available to both society and to nature in the future. In support of the project goals, I have developed the Water, Energy, and Biogeochemical Model (WEBMOD). WEBMOD integrates the latest understanding of hydrologic processes with the full gamut of geochemical simulations available in PHREEQC to simulate conservative and reactive transport of solutes that cycle between the atmosphere, the soils, and bedrock.

This data release contains the results from a study of the transport and transformation of nitrate in groundwater and streams across diverse glacial terranes within the Western Lake Michigan (WMIC) Drainages and Eastern Iowa (EIWA) Basins of the United States. The primary focus of the study was on how varying redox conditions influence the timing and delivery of nitrate to streams in agricultural watersheds. The data represents dissolved gas modeling results that were obtained from the Dissolved Gas Modeling and Environmental Tracer Analysis (DGMETA) software program. DGMETA was used to produce calibrated dissolved gas models that provide optimal recharge temperature, excess air, and excess nitrogen gas concentrations...
The lake and reservoir water-quality data were compiled from Water Quality Portal (https://www.waterqualitydata.us/) (National Water Quality Monitoring Council, 2015), USGS’s NAWQA Project’s data compilation (Oelsner and others, 2017) and the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (Montana Bureau of Mines, 2021), The compilation contains data for chloride, pH, specific conductance, sulfate, total dissolved solids (TDS) collected between water year 1970 to 2014. In addition 10 metals (aluminum, arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, selenium strontium, and zinc) analyzed during water years 1993 through 2014. Real-time, high frequency (1-second sample interval), georeferenced water quality data was collected in Utah Lake, Utah. Utah Lake is located approximately 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah, and approximately 5 miles west of Provo, Utah. Data was collected on 8/10/16 over an approximate 6.5-hour period (8:00 – 14:30 h PST) while underway. Sample water was continuously pumped through a pickup tube mounted at the stern of the vessel. Sample was pre-filtered using a 178 um in-line strainer, passed through a de-bubbler, and diverted through a 0.2 micron filter to various water quality instrumentation. Data was handled by a Campbell Scientific CR-6 data logger and recorded continuously to a Microsoft Excel file....

Surface water samples were collected from four stream/agricultural drain sites in the Sacramento Valley of California to measure pesticides commonly applied to rice. Samples were collected weekly from May through August 2010 to capture the rice pesticide application season. Water samples were filtered (0.7 µm) and extracted via solid-phase extraction. Additionally, the filter paper was solvent extracted to measure suspended sediment-associated pesticides. Both fractions were analyzed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 89 pesticides and pesticide degradates were measured in the dissolved water phase, while 14 pyrethroid insecticides were measured in the suspended sediment-associated fraction (pyrethroids...

This data release contains the results from a study that characterized the concentration and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the McKenzie River, a relatively pristine watershed in western Oregon, and its link to forming disinfection by-products (DBPs) in treated drinking water. The study aimed to identify the primary source(s) of DOC in source water for the Eugene Water and Electric Board’s (EWEB) conventional treatment plant on the McKenzie River near river mile 11, upstream of Hayden Bridge. The two classes of regulated compounds examined—trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs)—form when organic carbon in raw source water reacts with chlorine and (or) bromine during water treatment. The...
