In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project was to determine how river water quality has changed over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable monitoring has been conducted by the USGS on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Outside of the NAWQA project, the USGS and other Federal, State, and local agencies also have collected long-term water-quality data to support their own assessments of changing water quality. In 2017, data from these multiple sources were combined to support one of the most comprehensive assessments...

This section of the data release supports an archive of the models used in the associated publication. The U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay collected hydrologic and water-quality data to assess the effectiveness of agricultural conservation management practice (CMP) implementation at Mainstem Plum Creek and West Plum Creek in northeastern Wisconsin. Monitoring data from 2010–2020 at Mainstem Plum and 2013–2020 at West Plum were used to detect changes in hydrologic and water-quality responses during runoff events. Runoff events were defined by hydrographers and used to compute event loads and event flow-weighted mean concentrations of total phosphorus and total suspended solids –...

This data release includes geochemical and fallout radionuclide data for suspended sediments and potential sediment source types for the Loutsenhizer Arroyo and Sunflower Drain watersheds in western Colorado. Suspended sediments were collected by passive samplers deployed in the stream channel of the watershed outlets during four study periods between August 2018 and August 2019. Potential sediment source type samples were collected in the watersheds in duplicate using compositing techniques that targeted the top 5 centimeters of soil. The four potential sediment source-types were: agricultural fields, rangeland, arroyo walls, and streambanks. Source type samples were wet sieved to less than (<) 63 microns (µm)...

These data present suspended particle size distributions collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center within two embayments of San Francisco Bay. Data were collected at one site in San Pablo Bay and one site in Grizzly Bay from June through August 2019, by deploying a Sequoia Scientific Laser In-situ Scattering and Transmissometry instrument (LISST 100x) from a small vessel near pre-established USGS instrument moorings. At both sites, data were collected on six dates at three depths, generally near the water surface, at mid depth, and near the sediment bed, for 1-3 minutes at each depth. LISST volume concentrations are most accurate when the optical percent transmission...

As part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have partnered to evaluate the impacts of implementing agricultural conservation practices focused on nutrient management. Monitoring methods have been designed to allow for rapid assessment of water-quality changes in response to conservation efforts by focusing on subsurface-tile drainage and direct surface runoff from fields—the major pathways for nonpoint-source pollution to enter streams. Monitoring stations were established at the field edge that measured runoff volume and enabled the collection of samples...

Bedload sediment transport was calculated on the Elwha River, Washington to measure the amount of sediment transported along the riverbed during the 2016 water year. Bedload was measured using the Elwha bedload impact plate system (Hilldale and others, 2015). Physical bedload sampling by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for system calibration took place during November, 2012; March, May, and June 2013; and April 2014 at the Diversion Weir gauge (Magirl and others, 2015). Early in water year 2016 (year 5) the river formed an avulsion channel across the floodplain on river left, preventing a complete measurement of bedload passing the Diversion Weir gauge. As a result, bedload for water year 2016 (year 5 of the larger...
