This theme maps Late-Successional Reserves associated with occupied marbled murrelet sites. The criteria for mapping these areas are identified on pages C-10 of the Northwest Forest Plan Standards and Guidelines( See Supplemental Info). This dataset depicts Late-Successional Reserves associated with known (as of January 1, 1994) spotted owl activity centers in Matrix and Adaptive Management Areas. The criteria for mapping these areas are identified on pages C-10 and C-11 of the Northwest Forest Plan Standards and Guidelines (See supplemental Info.). This dataset represents areas in western Oregon with high conservation value. Identification of areas with high conservation value can help land managers strategize during planning efforts to better meet goals, such as viability of northern spotted owls. A large proportion of the areas identified as high conservation value fall on public lands, some areas of which are currently undergoing management plan revisions. Combination of this dataset with datasets depicting land ownership and protection status, such as the Protected Areas Database, can reveal areas of high conservation value which are not currently protected. Northern Spotted Owl habitat within Western Oregon. When the simple age class of a tree stand proved not to be sufficient in determining spotted owl habitat, BLM district biologists returned to the field during the 1991 field season and revisited all 60,000 Operations Inventory timber stand units in Western Oregon. They classified each stand as a 1, 2, or 3, depending on the type of owl activity present, and added that to the Micro*Storms Operations Inventory database. In November, 1991, that information was used to create this new theme from the Forest Operations Inventory spatial theme.
