To investigate the effects of imidacloprid on natural stream communities under controlled conditions, experimental streams were dosed with imidacloprid at concentrations ranging from 0.061 to 220 micrograms per liter (µg/L) for a period of 10 days. Natural stream macroinvertebrate communities were obtained from the Cache La Poudre River (Larimer County, CO) by colonizing trays full of large gravel for 75 days. The trays were added to laboratory experimental streams (mesocosms) at the USGS Fort Collins Science Center in Fort Collins, CO. For at one time the Bay was reported to have the highest levels of silver in its sediments and biota, along with the only accurately measured values of silver in solution, of any estuarine system. Description of Work At two of Wisconsin's Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Michigan, the Sheboygan River AOC and Milwaukee Estuary AOC, the USGS will assess whether sediment toxicity from PCBs, PAHs, selected metals, ammonia, or dissolved oxygen is present at acutely toxic or chronically toxic concentrations using sediment toxicity tests conducted with amphipods and midges. The objective of this new study will be to determine the toxicity of nitrogen compounds to stream-dwelling amphibians. Description of Work The sensitivity of listed species of fish or amphibians was evaluated in acute and chronic toxicity tests conducted with a range of inorganic or organic chemicals with different toxic modes of action. Description of Work Currently, a standard test method does not exist for evaluating the effects of sediment-associated toxicants on freshwater mussels. A standard guide for conducting water-only laboratory toxicity tests with freshwater mussels was approved in 2006 (ASTM 2008a) and provides a tested and validated, consensus-based methodology for conducting acute or chronic water toxicity tests with the early life stages (glochidia and juveniles) of freshwater mussels. A number of streams in Colorado were found to contain waterborne selenium concentrations that consistently exceeded the current U.S. EPA chronic criterion of 5 μg/L and often exceeded the acute criterion of 20 μg/L. Despite these elevated concentrations, no biological impact was observed. These findings led to a review of selenium exposure pathways in freshwater. The literature strongly indicates that chronic selenium toxicity can result from accumulation of selenium in the sediment, movement into the food chain, and resulting dietary uptake. Recent concern for the adverse effects from neonicotinoid insecticides has centered on risk for insect pollinators in general and bees specifically. However, natural resource managers are also concerned about the risk of neonicotinoids to conservation efforts for the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and need a tool to estimate risk for wild monarch butterflies exposed to clothianidin. In the present study, monarch butterfly larvae were exposed to contaminated milkweed plants from hatch until pupation, and the effects upon larval survival, larval growth, pupation success, and adult mass were measured. Data from this study will be used to extend the current pH/ alkalinity sea lamprey MLC prediction chart used to set 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) concentrations for treating streams to control sea lamprey populations in the Great Lakes. The current chart predicts levels of TFM required to kill 99.9% of larval sea lampreys in water with alkalinities up to 260 mg/L. Some streams in lower Michigan, however, exceed the current 260 mg/L alkalinity threshold. Treatment managers have requested an extension of the chart to an alkalinity of 300 mg/L for pHs between 8.0 and 8.5. In order to estimate the costs of chemical control of non-indigenous crayfish versus the cost of manual inspection of fish hatchery shipments a cost analysis was performed. The data includes ranking the likelihood of missing non-indigenous crayfish and effects on fish of handling during manual searches and the effects on fish during chemical exposure. The data also includes estimates of the time, staff, and salary requirements and cost of materials for each approach.

This data release includes physical and chemical characteristics of field collected samples from streams and rivers within the Tri-State Mining District (TSMD) as well as toxicity endpoints from chronic water-only and sediment laboratory exposures including survival and growth of the mussel Lampsilis siliquoidea; survival, growth, and reproduction of the amphipod Hyalella azteca; metal concentrations, and various water quality parameters collected during the toxicity studies. Mining in the Tri-State Mining District took place over a large geographic area, with mining taking place in the three states of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

Description of Work Determine the relative sensitivity of two species of amphibians (i.e. Wood Frogs Rana sylvatica, Cricket Frogs Acris crepitans blanchardi, American Toad Bufo americana) to exposure to acute and chronic levels of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia. This data will be used to evaluate the current ammonia criteria and for possible inclusion in the development of criteria for nitrite and nitrate.

This dataset contains results for treated wastewater samples collected at food processing facilities across the United States to characterize the potential contaminant profile of this type of wastewater. The associated report (Hubbard and others, 2021) can be found at https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.1c06821. Samples were analyzed by USGS laboratories using 10 target organic (576 unique analytes), 13 inorganic (32 unique analytes), and 18 microbial (15 bacterial groups) methods. The sampling site descriptions, analytical method descriptions, sample detection result determinations, and quality control data are provided within the tables and metadata of this data release.

The exposure of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) to lead and cadmium and the potential associated toxic effects were examined at three sites contaminated with lead in the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District and at a reference site. Mice from the contaminated sites showed evidence of oxidative stress and red-blood cell δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity was depressed by an average of 68% at the most contaminated site.
