These data were collected during a travel time and dissolved oxygen study along a 1-mile reach of the Blue River downstream from 58th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The study was a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Urban Waters Federal Partnership program, and the Kansas City, Missouri, Water Services Department. This is part of a larger USGS effort supporting the Middle Blue River Basin Urban Waters Federal Partnership. This child item of the data release contains groundwater-level elevation and water-quality data, both collected by contractors to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and later furnished to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and water-quality data collected by USGS during 2020. The USGS sampling and analysis resulted in a diverse dataset including major and trace elements, rare earth elements (REE), stable isotopes, radiogenic isotopes, and environmental tracers. This diverse dataset aids in providing a complete hydrologic and geochemical conceptualization of the processes occurring in the mine workings and adjacent groundwater and serves as an example of applications to other sites.

Data in this data release were obtained for water samples collected under Yellowstone National Park Research Permit YELL-05194 in 2017 through the Integrated Yellowstone Studies Project funded by the Mineral Resources Program. Isotope-spiked incubations were carried out to determine methylation and demethylation potential for Frying Pan spring, Crystal Sister East, Crystal Sister West, and Turbulent Pool, which were selected based on existing data on total mercury and methylmercury concentrations (see companion data release (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9IUY03O). A dye tracer study was completed on the lower Sandusky River between July 11-13, 2017, during a confirmed Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) spawning event. The data contained in this data release include time series of dye concentration at fixed stations downstream of the injection site. Six submersible fluorometers (Turner Designs C3TM fluorometers) were deployed at predetermined stations between 1.19 and 16.05 river miles downstream of the injection point on July 10, 2017, approximately 24 hours prior to the injection. The fluorometers were mounted atop cinder blocks and deployed in approximately 3 to 4 feet of water with good circulation. The instruments were secured to shore using safety lines. Leavenworth Creek, a tributary of South Clear Creek and Clear Creek near Georgetown, Colorado contains copper, lead, and zinc concentrations that are near to or exceed aquatic life standards. The creek drains the Argentine mining district where mining was active primarily in the early 1900s. The Captain Jack Superfund site near Ward, Colorado hosts extensive interconnected underground mine workings, which drain via the Big Five Adit. Drainage from the adit has historically been acidic with elevated concentrations of metals. In 2018 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) utilized a subsurface remediation strategy consisting of the installation of a hydraulic bulkhead within the workings to preclude drainage out of the mine. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release consists of data from two tracer investigations in the Snake Creek drainage of Great Basin National Park, White Pine County, Nevada. The first investigation, occurring from April to September 2019, involved injecting a fluorescein dye tracer below a diversion point in Snake Creek and monitoring 13 sites in the Snake Creek and neighboring Big Wash drainages for presence of the dye. The results of the first investigation were used to select a targeted monitoring location for a second, quantitative investigation. To support research on dispersion in river channels, a tracer dye experiment was performed on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 25-27, 2017. This data release provides access to hyperspectral image acquired during the experiment and the supporting field-based measurements of reflectance and dye concentration are available through related data releases. The hyperspectral image data were acquired by Quantum Spatial Inc. (QSI) using the ITRES CASI 1500H imaging system deployed from a Cessna Caravan manned aircraft from a flying height of 1000 m above ground level.
