In the Rocky Mountains of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (United States), recent melting at a high-elevation (3,091 m asl) ice patch exposed a mature stand of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) trees located ~180 m above modern treeline dating to the mid-Holocene (c. 5,900-5,436 cal y BP +- 51 y). From this subfossil wood record, we contextualize the recent magnitude of warming relative to mid-Holocene conditions and reconstruct changes in climate that resulted in regional ice patch growth and reductions in treeline elevation. The data were processed in three distinct phases that resulted in this dataset: collection, processing, and avalanche signal analysis. This dataset consists of samples from 647 trees with 2304 growth disturbances identified from 12 avalanche paths.

These data include giant sequioa (Sequoiadendron giganteum) age and tree-ring data from measurements on 458 stumps. The original data were recorded on paper data sheets by Ellsworth Huntington and his assistants in 1911 and 1912; their methods are elaborated in Huntington (1914), and further details can be found in Stephenson and Demetry (1995). We entered the data from photocopies of the original data sheets which, to the best of our knowledge, reside at Yale University. The photocopies apparently were made in the late 1960s or early 1970s and were housed in Sequoia National Park’s archives. The Salt Lake City, Utah, region has a climate record dating from the mid-1800s that can be used to calibrate a tree ring record to climate and streamflows. A number of good candidate species for tree ring analysis include indigenous coniferous species that are signature species in tree ring analysis because their growth is sensitive to drought. However, these species represent different habitats. This dataset includes processed tree ring data from avalanche paths throughout Colorado, USA. The data were processed in three distinct phases that resulted in this dataset: collection, processing, and avalanche signal analysis. This dataset consists of samples from 1188 cross-sections and increment cores from 1023 individual trees within 24 avalanche paths across the region. From these samples 4135 probable avalanche related growth disturbances were identified.
Radiocarbon dating of silicified wood was performed at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Radiocarbon Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. All samples were chemically treated using the standard acid-base-acid (ABA) procedure before being combusted online in the presence of excess high-purity oxygen. Water and other contaminant gases were removed using cryogenic separation techniques, and the resulting purified CO2 gas was measured manometrically and converted to graphite using an iron catalyst and hydrogen reduction (Vogel et al., 1984). This dataset includes processed tree ring data from avalanche paths in southeast Alaska, USA. The data were processed in three distinct phases that resulted in this dataset: collection, processing, and avalanche signal analysis. This dataset consists of samples from 434 cross sections from 426 unique trees throughout six avalanche paths in the study region. This resulted in 2706 identified growth disturbances (GDs) due to avalanches.
This data consists of observations of individual trees that were subjected to prescribed fire in western US national parks. Information on individual trees include measurements of tree live/dead status, growth, size, competition, and fire-caused damage. The data also includes estimates of plot-level vapor pressure deficit anomaly before fire. The data include ages and locations of presence/absence surveys for sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata) on the Bureau of Land Management Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, New Mexico. We sampled cross-sections of sagebrush along 11 General Land Office section survey lines and conducted growth ring analysis to produce inner-ring dates for 93 sagebrush plants. The presence/absence surveys were conducted along the same section lines as the growth ring samples and were compared to the original surveys from 1881 to assess vegetation change on the landscape.
Silicified wood samples were vacuum impregnated with epoxy, sectioned, and sputter coated with 10 nm Au/Pd at the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, CA. Samples were imaged in a Tescan VEGA3 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with an Oxford 150 mm2 X-MaxN large area energy dispersive spectrometer at the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, CA. Backscatter (BSE) images were collected with an accelerating voltage (HV) of 30 kV and a working distance (WD) of ~15 mm. Magnification is indicated on individual images. The data files for Scanning Electron Microsocopy (SEM) contain representative SEM-BSE images of samples OFL101 and OFL103-2. Old Faithful Geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park is one of the best studied geysers in the world. Under research permit YELL-SCI-8030, samples from 13 silicified tree remnants were collected adjacent to the Old Faithful Geyser cone in April and November 2019. The silicified wood samples were dated using the radiocarbon (14C) method and were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the extent of wood silicification. This study was conducted in order to provide new information on the geyser’s past decadal to centennial eruptive activity. Understanding Old Faithful’s past could provide a baseline for understanding future changes in its eruption intervals.

This dataset contains two phases of research. The first dataset includes several variables that were sampled across aspen stands in the Santa Rosa, Ruby, and Jarbidge mountain ranges (Great Basin, Northern Nevada, USA) in 2010 and 2011. Across 101 aspen sites, several plot-level attributes were collected (e.g. elevation, slope, aspen stand type). This dataset describes tree growth and site characteristics for 26 monitoring plots in 3 sites in Redwood National Park in California, USA. One site (A972) was established and sampled in 2007, 2008, and 2013 (Dagley and others, 2023). Two sites (Holter Ridge and Whiskey 40) were established and sampled in 2009 (van Mantgem and Das, 2014). Six existing plots in the Holter Ridge and Whiskey 40 sites were resampled for this study in summer of 2014 and winter of 2015. Tree growth data represent basal area increments at core height. This dataset includes stable carbon isotope values, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose concentrations (expressed as percent of ash-free dry mass) for riparian cottonwood (Populus deltoides) tree rings growing on the Little Missouri River floodplain, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota.
