This report describes the results of flow tests on the rate and ultimate yield of uranium and pyrite leaching under conditions representative of carbonate in situ uranium leaching. The effects of cation type, pH, carbonate and oxygen concentrations, and flow rate were investigated for uranium leaching. Leachant cation, pH, and carbonate concentration had little effect on uranium leaching, but the leaching rate depended on oxidant concentration to one -half order. The insensitivity to cation type led to a new process whereby the leach solution is preceded by a preflush containing the chloride of the leaching cation. This preflush prevented permeability losses associated with carbonate precipitation and clay swelling...

These data were collected using field portable (handheld) X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) equipped with a 4-watt Ta/Au X-ray tube. Samples of surficial alluvium, rock, and archived core material from existing auger- or sonic-drilled monitoring wells in Hinkley Valley and the adjoining Water Valley, 140 kilometers (km) northeast of Los Angeles, California, were measured as part of an investigation of naturally-occurring and anthropogenic hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), concentrations in local groundwater. Surficial alluvium samples were collected from small stream channels draining distinct geologic units, or from previously mapped river deposits, and generally consisted of silt, sand, and granules to small pebbles. Twigs...

This data release includes laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) U-Pb zircon geochronology data from four samples collected from syn- and post-Columbia River Basalt Group strata. Samples were collected from within alluvial fan strata and gravel-mantled hillslopes. Sample 16MANC2-01 was collected from an excavation into rounded fluvial gravel deposits along the Manastash Ridge. The unit collected includes Cascadian derived volcanic clasts and is interpreted as an inset terrace of fluvial strata deposited on the Manastash Ridge. Sample 16MANC1-06 is a rhyodacitic boulder collected on a nearby exposure of gravel mantled hillslopes along Manastash Ridge. Sample 16MRF01 was collected...

These data represent laboratory reflectance measurements conducted on a suite of sandstone, tuffaceous mudstone and claystone rocks and sediment, which are known host and source materials for roll front Uranium deposits mined throughout the South Texas Coastal Plains. Visible through Near Infrared through Shortwave Infrared (~0.4 - 2.5 microns) reflectance were measured using an artificial light source attached to an Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) spectrometer. A total of 125 spectra were measured and analyzed, representing samples from nine former open-pit mine sites excavating rocks from four different mapped geologic units, including rocks and sediments from the Jackson Group, Catahoula, Oakville and Goliad...

This data release includes estimates of potassium (K), equivalent uranium (eU), and equivalent thorium (eTh) for the conterminous United States derived from the U.S. Geological Survey's national airborne radiometric data compilation (Duval and others, 2005). Airborne gamma ray spectrometry (AGRS) measures the gamma-rays that are emitted from naturally occurring radioactive isotopes found in rocks and soil, the most abundant of which are potassium (K40), uranium (U238), and thorium (Th232). Radiometric data can aid in exploration of critical mineral resources, including deposits of barium, fluorine, titanium, beryllium, niobium, rare-earth elements, and uranium. There is also growing interest in using radiometric...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled a geodatabase containing mineral-related geospatial data for the People's Republic of China. The data can be used in analyses of the extractive fuel and nonfuel mineral industries and related economic and physical infrastructure integral for the successful operation of the mineral industries within the area of study as well as the movement of mineral products across domestic and global markets. This geodatabase reflects the USGS ongoing commitment to its mission of understanding the nature and distribution of global mineral commodity supply chains by updating and publishing the georeferenced locations of mineral commodity production and processing facilities, mineral...

In research sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, a technique was developed for simulation of heap leaching on uranium ores. The equipment used for this simulation consisted of 2 -f t -di am columns, constructed in sections, such that ores as coarse as minus 4 -in could be treated in bed depths ranging from 8 to 18 ft with test condition variations. The technique consisted of the separate steps of ore preparation, column loading, charge wetting, leaching, washing, and residue recovery. For the ores studied, sulfuric acid was found to be generally superior to alkaline lixiviants. The rate of uranium extraction by acid leaching proved to be primarily a function of percolation rate, alkalinity of the ores and oxidant requirements...

The Marcellus Shale Energy and Environment Laboratory (MSEEL) site is a long-term field site and laboratory at the Northeast Natural Energy LLC (NNE) production facility, adjacent to the Monongahela River, located in western Monongalia County, West Virginia, USA. NNE began drilling two horizontal production wells, MIP (Morgantown Industrial Park) -5H and MIP-3H, in the Marcellus Shale in 2014. The wells were completed in December 2015. Large volumes of wastewater are generated with natural gas production. These wastewaters contain organic and inorganic chemical constituents from fracturing fluids used during drilling and stimulation of gas in host rocks/shale, as well as chemical compounds that are derived from...

These data on the concentrations of 27 selected elements were collected using a field portable (handheld) X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) instrument (Groover and Izbicki, 2016) equipped with a 4-watt Ta/Au X-ray tube on samples of 1) surficial alluvium, 2) rock, and 3) archived core material and drill cuttings from monitoring wells across an approximately 14,300 square kilometer area in the western part of the Mojave Desert, between 60 to 210 kilometers (km) northeast of Los Angeles, California. These samples were measured using a pXRF as part of a regional-scale investigation of naturally-occurring trace elements (including arsenic, chromium, and uranium) dissolved in groundwater (Groover and Izbicki, 2018), and a local-scale...
