This collection consists of processed rock samples as well as unprocessed geological hand samples associated with the research of USGS scientist Robert E. Zartman. Zartman was an early contributor to USGS geochemistry and geochronology research and many of these samples are likely associated with his lab work with K-Ar, Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, fission track, and U-Th-Pb dating methods. This collection contains one pallet of geological samples and one pallet of laboratory equipment.

First release: 2016 Revised: 2019 Isotopic analyses of authigenic carbonates and methanotrophic deep-sea mussels, Bathymodiolus sp., was performed on samples collected from seep fields in the Baltimore and Norfolk Canyons on the north Atlantic margin. Samples were collected using remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) during three different research cruises in 2012, 2013, and 2015. Analyses were performed by several different laboratories, and the results are presented in spreadsheet format.

Sample Analyses: Four samples of silica sinter from Giant and Castle Geysers composed of opal-A or opal-A/C were analyzed for U-Th isotopes at USGS laboratories in Denver, CO (https://www.usgs.gov/centers/gecsc/science/denver-radiogenic-isotope-lab?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects). Small fragments, weighing approximately 10 g, were cut and polished to enable microsampling using carbide dental burrs. Sub-samples consisted of small pits or trenches that cut across microfabric elements and integrate material weighing 0.082–0.109 g. Resulting powders were digested using concentrated hydrofluoric acid (HF) after spiking with known amounts of a mixed 229Th-233U-236U tracer solution. After evaporation,...
