Nonnative Phragmites australis (common reed) is widely distributed across North America and insufficient knowledge of P. australis has impeded the efficiency of management. To aid in Phragmites management and future studies, we used RNA-seq data from multiple types of plant tissue to construct forty-nine P. australis transcriptomes via different assembly tools and multiple parameter settings, resulting in seven assembled transcriptomes for further comprehensive assessments. The optimal transcriptome (“cd-hit”) was selected for functional annotation and downstream analyses. This data release contains the seven assembled transcriptomes, and data derived from the optimal transcriptome (functional annotations, tissue-specific...

Plant roots have the best-understood mutualisms with microbes, but leaf and bract cell endosymbiosis have not been previously reported. Leaf and bract cells of more than 30 species in 18 families of seed plants were surveyed for the presence of intracellular bacteria and several experiments were designed to find and analyze nutrient exchanges between bacteria and plant cells. This dataset contains the results of 1) histochemical analyses to detect hormones, superoxide, and nitrogenous chemicals around bacteria within plant leaf and bract cells, 2) experiments to assess the differential absorption of isotopic nitrogen into plants, and 3) genetic analysis of bacteria isolated from plant material.

Vegetation sampling and elevation data were collected to characterize the sedge-grass meadow of Arcadia Marsh, Arcadia, Michigan (USA), a drowned river mouth wetland near Lake Michigan. Wetland vegetation community data were collected by quadrat sampling in 1995, 2002, and 2010 and topographic data were collected via GPS and LIDAR positional data in 2010.

This dataset consists of tabular information from coastal studies of earthquake and tsunami history along a central part of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The study area encompasses four estuaries along the Pacific coast of southern Washington and northernmost Oregon. Nearly all the field work took place between 1986 and 1998. Data tables, 18 in all, archive mostly georeferenced information about stratigraphy, radiocarbon ages, and trees dead and living. Some of this data was interpreted in reports published between 1987 and 2005, but most of it was previously unavailable. An accompanying guide, with hyperlinks to the data tables, explains the data tables more thoroughly than does the metadata. Contributors include...

The sensitivity of tidal marshes to environmental changes that result from sea-level rise or drought conditions is uncertain. We used a controlled greenhouse experiment and factorial flooding x salinity treatments to explore the differential responses of three tidal marsh plant species. Each species exhibited unique responses, with negative responses to increased salinity and longer flooding, but only limited evidence for interactive effects. These data support the following publication: Buffington, K.J., Goodman, A.C., Freeman, C.M. and Thorne, K.M., 2020. Testing the interactive effects of flooding and salinity on tidal marsh plant productivity. Aquatic Botany, p.103231.

Bacteria were isolated from seeds of non-native Phragmites australis (haplotype M) then representatives were evaluated for their capacities to become intracellular in root cells, and their effects on: 1.) germination rates and seedling growth, 2.) susceptibility to damping-off disease, and 3.) mortality and growth of competitor plant seedlings (dandelion (Taraxacum officionale F. H. Wigg) and curly dock (Rumex crispus L.)). The experiments included the following assessments of Phragmites-associated bacteria (Pseudomonas spp, strains Sandy LB4 (Pseudomonas fluorescens) and West 9 (Pseudomonas sp.)): capacity for plant growth promotion (using Poa annua seeds), Poa annua and Phragmites australis seed germination and...
