This data release is a compilation of vitrinite reflectance (Ro) data from the Southwestern Wyoming Province in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The data includes about 1,200 Ro measurements from wells drilled for oil and gas exploration and production, coal test holes, and outcrop sections.

Two members of the Green River Formation in the Washakie Basin have been analysed by organic geochemical and organic petrographic techniques and the results placed in a sequence stratigraphic framework. One of these members, the Laney Shale, was deposited in a hydrologically closed, alkaline lake under an arid climate and was characterized by high concentrations of alginite-rich organic matter whereas the other, the Luman Tongue, was deposited in a hydrologically open, freshwater lake under a humid climate and consisted of organic-poor profundal lake mudstones and coaly lake margin sediments. Potential source rocks in both lake types have the potential for generating high-wax oil at high subsurface temperatures...

An ESRI GRID raster data model and TIN model of the overburden material above the LaClede bed of the Laney Member of the Eocene Green River Formation was needed to perform calculations in the Green River and Washakie Basins, southwestern Wyoming as part of a National Oil Shale Assessment.

In 2021 the United States Geological Survey (USGS) sampled the lower part of the Upper Cretaceous Lewis Shale in the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province to better characterize its petroleum source rock potential for an upcoming resource assessment. Ninety-five samples from 24 wells were collected from well cuttings of the lower part of the Lewis Shale stored at the U.S. Geological Survey Core Research Center in Lakewood, Colorado. The selected wells are located near the shallow margins of the basin to obtain samples that were not subjected to the effects of deep burial and subsequent organic carbon loss due to thermal maturation as described by Daly and Edman (1987) (fig, 1). The sample intervals were...

This coverage contains land status and Federal mineral ownership for approximately 37,800 square miles in southern Wyoming. The polygon coverage contains two attributes of ownership information for each polygon. One attribute indicates where the surface is State owned, privately owned, or, if Federally owned, which Federal agency manages the land surface. The other attribute indicates which minerals, if any, are owned by the Federal govenment. This coverage is based on land status and Federal mineral ownership data compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Wyoming State Bureau of Land Management (BLM) at a scale of 1:24,000. These data were compiled primarily to serve the USGS National Oil and Gas Resource...

ESRI GRID raster datasets were created to display and quantify oil shale resources for three zones in the Green River and Washakie Basins, southwestern Wyoming as part of a National Oil Shale Assessment. The oil shale zones in descending order are: LaClede Bed of the Laney Member of the Eocene Green River Formation, Wilkins Peak Member of the Eocene Green River Formation , and the Tipton Member of the Eocene Green River Formation. Each raster cell represents a one-acre square of the land surface and contains values for either oil yield in barrels per acre, gallons per ton, or isopach thickness, in feet, as defined by the grid name: *_b (barrels per acre), *_g (gallons per ton), and *_i (isopach thickness) where...
