The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey Colorado Water Science Center is to be the principal source of timely, high-quality science information on Colorado’s water resources, and to be a leader in providing an understanding of how those resources relate to the people and environment of the state. This will help planners, managers, and others to make the decisions necessary for the wise use of these limited and shared resources.
In 2014, the Upper Rio Grande Basin (URGB) of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico was chosen as a focus area study (FAS) for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Census. The three main objectives of the USGS National Water Census are to (1) provide a nationally consistent set of indicators that reflect each status and trend relating to the availablity of water resources in the United States, (2) provide information and tools that allow users to better understand the flow requirements for ecological purposes, and (3) report on areas of significant competition over water resources and the factors that have led to the competition. The URGB FAS will help meet these objectives through an integrated,...

RiverWare simulated daily regulated streamflow data for modeled locations in the spatially refined model region within the Red River Basin. Values reported are for 18 different climate projection scenarios and a historical scenario, from 2010 through 2099 and 1976 through 2005, respectively. The RiverWare model was used to determine the impacts on regulated flows, lake levels and water permit reliability. RiverWare was used for this project because of its ability to simulate water use, reservoir operations, and local/interstate regulations.

Final Report Abstract: More than half of the world’s population relies upon monsoonal rainfall that supports agriculture. While in many locations climate change is resulting in less moisture from fewer winter storms and more intense summer precipitation events, rural working landscapes (agricultural managed systems) are struggling to recover from increasingly extreme droughts and floods. The Cañada Alamosa watershed, a 420,000 acre in southwestern New Mexico (see figure 1), faces contemporary resource challenges common to the Southwest; overgrazing and fire suppression have led to a loss of deep soils and vegetative cover. This area’s traditional cultural practices of managed stormwater flooding of the historic...

The glacial aquifer system of the United States encompasses all or parts of 25 states and is the most widely used supply of drinking water in the Nation (Maupin and Barber, 2005; Maupin and Arnold, 2010). A series of seven raster data sets were derived from a database of water-well drillers' records that was compiled in partial fulfillment of the goals of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Groundwater Availability and Use assessment program (U.S. Geological Survey, 2002). They contain hydrogeologic information for areas of the U.S. that are north of the southern limit of Pleistocene glaciation, including the total thickness of glacial deposits, thickness of coarse-grained sediment within the glacial deposits, specific-capacity...
Wetland hydroperiod, the length of time water is available in wetlands, is sensitive to changes in precipitation, temperature and timing due to climate variation. Truncated hydroperiod has major implications for wetland-dependent species (e.g., waterfowl, amphibians) and human water allocation (PPP LCC Need 1). To characterize wetland hydroperiod in the Plains and Prairie Pothole Region, we first identify location and hydroperiod of wetlands using field-based and remotely sensed training data (RapidEye, Landsat). We define hydroperiod as wetland ephemerality, where ephemerality represents the persistence of a wetland across the growing season. We then link hydroperiod to climatic variation by relating climate time-series...

Despite the lack of surface flows, the Colorado River riparian corridor in Mexico has proven to be ecologically resilient. Floods in the 1980s and 90s in the region brought back large swaths of native riparian habitat, which still persist today in some areas along the river. Because the historic floodplain is extremely important for agricultural production and therefore the local economy, habitat maintenance must be integrated with continued utilization of lands and water for this purpose. The riparian, marsh, and open-water areas found in Reach 4 provide critical habitat for both migratory and resident riparian bird species. Due to its ecological importance, the riparian corridor and Reach 4 in particular have been...

This dataset depicts annual average climate moisture index (CMI, Willmott and Feddema, 1992) computed using the ratio of annual precipitation (P) to annual potential evapotranspiration, (PET).al., 2004. Climate Moisture Index (CMI) indicator for the globe on a 0.5 X 0.5 degree global grid. The CMI illustrates the relationship between plant water demand and available precipitation. The CMI indicator ranges from -1 to +1, with wet climates showing positive CMI, and dry climates negative CMI. Climate Moisture Index (CMI) = (P / PET) -1 when P < PET OR Climate Moisture Index (CMI) = 1- (PET / P) when P = PET P = long term annual precipitation (mm/yr) computed from Mitchell et al. (2003) PET = potential evapotranspiration...
Measurements of liquid water content (LWC) of coastal fog events were collected using specialized fog water collection units during the hot dry summer season (July to September) and continued through the winter. These data were assembled to explore the potential of fog water collection as a water resource for Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District public lands in San Mateo County, California. Simultaneous meteorological measurements were collected for four variables: wind, temperature, humidity, and solar radiation. The dataset includes ~12,000 records for two summers (2016 and 2017) at two sites. One site was a grassland near the MROSD Skyline Field Office (SFO) and the other in a Douglas forest clearing at...

The Water Resources Mission Area - Social & Economic Drivers Program provides improved understanding of the impacts and interaction of socioeconomics and water availability. Research focuses on improved understanding of socioeconomic influence on water demand, use, and movement regionally; as well as National drivers to improve the ability of the National Water Census to forecast availability under a variety of conditions. This Sciencebase community will be a space for projects within the Social & Economic Drivers Program to store, manage, and share data.
Matchett and Fleskes (2018) evaluated availability of wetland and agricultural habitats used by waterbirds overwintering in the Central Valley of California under 17 scenarios of projected climate, urbanization, and water supply management (for more information about scenarios see scenario description and Table 1 in Matchett and Fleskes [2018]). Central Valley waterbird habitats investigated in this research included managed flooded wetlands and croplands and dry cropland habitats. Flooded cropland habitats are defined as winter-flooded rice, winter-flooded corn, and other winter-flooded cropland (in Tulare basin). Flooded wetlands are defined as summer-irrigated seasonal wetland, seasonal wetland that is not summer...

The dataset summarizes areas of Central Valley waterbird habitats (i.e., wetland and cropland types) that are available for each of 17 projected scenarios by planning basin, scenario, habitat, and month (August – April of the following year). The dataset also includes relatively recent (year 2005) area of habitat (i.e., “existing_km2”) for comparison with habitat areas based on scenarios. In contrast with the dataset referenced as "Table A1", which solely includes the three managed, flooded cropland habitats, cropland habitats in this dataset are defined as winter-flooded rice, unplowed dry rice, winter-flooded corn, unplowed dry corn, and other winter-flooded cropland (in Tulare basin). Wetlands are defined as...
