Here we archive data collected during a nitrogen addition field experiment in the Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel. Calcium nitrate was added on 8 dates to a segment of the ship channel centered at Navigation Light 74. Prior to and following the nutrient additions, we collected water samples and sensor-based measurements at 7 sites between Navigation Light 70 and 76. Water samples for nutrient analyses were collected in 500 mL High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) amber containers from 1 m and 8 m depths using a peristaltic pump. Whole water samples for phytoplankton analysis were collected from 1 m depth in 500 mL clear HDPE containers and immediately preserved with 20 mL of Lugol’s iodine solution (Lugol’s,...

This data release documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in Suisun Marsh and Suisun Bay in the San Francisco Estuary of California, USA. The data set includes nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, chlorophyll, blue-green algal pigments, and phytoplankton community structure. Data-collection cruises were conducted under three different environmental/flow conditions between July - September 2018 that coincided with conditions prior to, during, and following the Suisun Marsh Salinity Control Gates Summer Action. The action is part of the Delta Smelt Resiliency...

Cloud water can be a significant hydrologic input to mountain forests. Because it is a precipitation source that is vulnerable to climate change, it is important to quantify amounts of cloud water input at watershed and regional scales. During this study, cloud water and rain samples were collected monthly for 2 years at sites on windward and leeward East Maui. The difference in isotopic composition between volume-weighted average cloud water and rain samples was 1.4‰ δ 18O and 12‰ δ 2H for the windward site and 2.8‰ δ 18O and 25‰ δ 2H for the leeward site, with the cloud water samples enriched in 18O and 2H relative to the rain samples. A summary of previous literature shows that fog and/or cloud water is enriched...
Data was collected in the Cache Slough Complex located in the northern San Francisco Estuary to characterize water quality parameters at high spatial resolution. Data collection was conducted on three separate occasions: October 2017, May 2018, and October 2018. Data set includes nitrate, ammonium, ortho-phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, chlorophyll, stable isotopes including water isotopes. Measurements were used to calculate evaporation to inflow ratios and water residence time.
Water samples for oxygen-18 and deuterium isotope determinations were stored unfiltered in 15 ml glass bottles and analyzed at the USGS laboratories in Reston, Virginia. Analysis of oxygen isotopes was according to the methods of Epstein and Mayeda (1953) with a precision of ±0.1‰, and the hydrogen isotopes were analyzed according to the method described in Kendall and Coplen (1985) and Coplen et al. (1991) with a precision of ±1.5‰. Ratios are reported relative to VSMOW. References: Coplen, T. B., Wildman, J. D., and Chen, J., 1991.
