It also records a variety of supporting data collected at Cladophora measurement stations. These supporting data include: - seasonal time series of light, currents, wave action, temperature, specific conductivity, turbidity, pH, phycocyanin, chlorophyll, and dissolved oxygen from moored sensors at a subset of stations; - measurements of Secchi disk depth and water chemistry; - water column profiles of PAR, temperature, specific conductivity,...
Arsenic (As) toxicity is a global environmental and health problem. There are both natural (eg volcanic activity) and anthropogenic sources of As (eg lead arsenate and copper arsenate were commonly used pesticides in the 1900’s). Aqueous levels of arsenic in the Klamath Basin (CA, OR), which has a volcanic origin, can exceed at some locations both the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality human health water quality criteria (2.1 ug/L) (Sturdevant, 2011) and the US EPA drinking water limit (10 ug/L) (US EPA., 2001). In this study, dissolved concentrations of As, copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) were measured in more than 30 sites within the Klamath Basin between May and October. Results from samples collected between...

In the Great Lakes basin, there are numerous organizations undertaking scientific monitoring and research efforts with the goal of identifying threats and evaluating management strategies that will protect and restore the Great Lakes ecosystem. Coordination among all these stakeholders is a challenge, and having a centralized location where researchers and managers can identify relevant scientific activities and access fundamental information about these activities is crucial for efficient management. The Science in the Great Lakes (SiGL) Mapper was a map-based discovery tool that spatially displayed basin-wide multidisciplinary monitoring and research activities conducted by both USGS and partners from all five...
This data release contains cyanotoxin concentrations for microcystins, cylindrospermopsins, anatoxins, and saxitoxins assessed using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) on 363 samples collected from 82 surface-water sites located in the Cascade Range in Oregon, and eight sites located outside of the Oregon Cascade Range in Washington and California, during 2016-2020. Three sample types were assessed: 1) benthic colonies and mats of cyanobacteria (n=109), 2) plankton net tows (n=90), and 3) Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking samplers (SPATTs)(n=164).

Mono Lake is a hypersaline (~85 ppt), alkaline (pH 9.8), closed-basin lake located in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, USA (38°N, 119°W). Water enters the lake primarily from snowmelt and exits by evaporation (~1 m/yr). This hydrological condition, plus weathering reactions in the lake’s tributaries, produce the uniquely high salinity and pH characteristic of Mono Lake (Garrels & MacKenzie, 1967). These properties also tightly tie lake levels and water chemistry to climate, with modern and Pleistocene high stands correlated with wet Sierra Nevada conditions (Benson et al. 1998). Mono Lake is typically monomictic, with thermal-driven summer stratification that is disrupted by winter, wind-driven...

This data set includes the sample site locations, site descriptions, and abiotic data used in the analyses reported in McKenna et al. 2008. The data represent selected abiotic conditions within the St. Lawrence and lower reaches of four US tributaries during 2004. Samples were collected from shallow, seinable areas (< 1.5 m) of the St. Lawrence River, adjacent wetland channels, and the lower reaches of major tributaries (Grass River, Raquette River, St. Regis River, and Salmon River). This part of the St. Lawrence River is non-tidal fresh water. Sample locations were randomly selected from a grid of spatial cells (1 km x 1 km) encompassing the area within the 5,700 ha Akwesasne Wetland Complex (at the intersection...
The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 38 wells used for domestic and small system drinking water supply in the Coachella Valley of California in 2020. The wells were sampled for the Coachella Valley Basin (CODA) Domestic Aquifer Study Unit of the California State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. Coachella Valley is located in the Desert hydrogeologic province (Johnson and Belitz, 2003) and is structurally divided into four subbasins by the San Andreas fault: the Indio subbasin, the Mission Creek subbasin,...

This U.S. Geological Survey data release provides a comprehensive dataset of water-quality data and sampling-site characteristics collected in 1978–2018 during a study of the effects of land disposal of treated wastewater on groundwater quality in an unconsolidated sand and gravel aquifer on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Treated sewage-derived wastewater was discharged to rapid-infiltration beds at Joint Base Cape Cod for nearly 60 years before the disposal was moved to a different location in December 1995. The discharge formed a plume of contaminated groundwater that partly discharges to a glacial kettle lake about 1,600 feet from the beds and extends about 4.5 miles toward coastal saltwater bodies at Vineyard Sound....
