The study's goal was to downscale 2013 250-m expedited Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (eMODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to 30 m (Gu, Y. and Wylie, B.K., 2015, Developing a 30-m grassland productivity estimation map for central Nebraska using 250-m MODIS and 30-m Landsat-8 observations, Remote Sensing of Environment, v. 171, p. 291-298)using 2013 Landsat 8 data. The eMODIS NDVI was downscaled for four periods: mid spring, early summer, late summer and mid fall. The objective was to capture phenologies during periods that correspond to 1) annual grass growth, 2) annual grass senescence, 3) the optimal NDVI profile separation between sagebrush and other shrubs in the region, and...

We evaluated the expected success of habitat recovery in priority areas under 3 different restoration scenarios: passive, planting, and seeding. Passive means no human intervention following a fire disturbance. Under a planting scenario, field technicians methodically plant young sagebrush saplings at the burned site. The seeding scenario involves distributing large amounts of sagebrush seeds throughout the affected area.

Map of cumulative 38-day nest survival predicted from a Bayesian hierarchical shared frailty model of sage-grouse nest fates. The midpoint of coefficient conditional posterior distributions of 38-day nest survival were used for prediction at each 30 meter pixel across the landscape.

This dataset provides a near-real-time estimate of 2018 herbaceous annual cover with an emphasis on annual grass (Boyte and Wylie. 2016. Near-real-time cheatgrass percent cover in the Northern Great Basin, USA, 2015. Rangelands 38:278-284.) This estimate was based on remotely sensed enhanced Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (eMODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data gathered through July 1, 2018. This is the second iteration of an early estimate of herbaceous annual cover for 2018 over the same geographic area. The previous dataset used eMODIS NDVI data gathered through May 1 (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9KSR9Z4). The pixel values for this most recent estimate ranged from 0 to100% with...

We monitored Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter, Sage-Grouse) nests and various habitat characteristics at the nest locations near Susanville in northeastern California, crossing over into northwestern Nevada. We employed a before-after-control-impact (BACI) experimental design to account for spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the system and to derive estimates of relative change in survival parameters. Sage-Grouse nest survival decreased after the Rush Fire but decreased more in the burned area relative to the unburned area. Although female Sage-Grouse continued to occupy burned areas, nest survival was reduced from 52 percent to 19 percent. Using a BACI ratio approach we found that nest survival...

Ranked index of model-projected nest site selection integrated with nesting productivity (i.e., nest survival), demonstrating the spatial distribution of adaptive vs. maladaptive habitat selection at each 30 m pixel. Hierarchical models of nest selection and survival were fit to landscape covariates within a Bayesian modeling framework in Nevada and California from 2009 through 2017 to develop spatially explicit information about nest site selection and survival consequences across the landscape. Habitat was separated into 16 classes ranking from high (1) to low (16). Habitat ranked highest where the top nest selection and survival classes intersected (adaptive selection), whereas the lowest rank occurred where...

This data set depicts a preliminary version of the management zone boundaries for Greater and Gunnison sage-grouse in the western United States and Canada. These boundaries were digitized from a hand drawn figure originally created by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies' (WAFWA) Sage-grouse Conservation Planning Framework Team for use in the Greater Sage-grouse Comprehensive Conservation Strategy. The delineation of sage-grouse management zones provide a context for the Sage-grouse Conservation Planning Framework Team to keep track of changes in sage-grouse populations and habitat trends and to identify where appropriate conservation strategies might be implemented.</purpose> This represents...

Sediment magnetic and geochemical results have been obtained fromthe top 60 meters of lacustrine sediments recovered in two coresfrom Tule Lake in northern California. The sediment magnetic andgeochemical data, presented here in tabular form, complementstudies of diatoms and pollen in the cores that are the bases forpublished paleoclimatic interpretations. This report alsodocuments the methods used to obtain the magnetic properties andgeochemical data.

The data presented here contain quasi-event hydrologic response characteristics for quickflow response intervals (QRIs) calculated at 57 USGS GAGES-II reference watersheds in the western US. Each row in the attached csv contains characteristics for an individual QRI at one site. QRI characteristics include duration, antecedent flow, input, input rate, peak flow, potential evapotranspiration, quickflow, and quickflow/input (effectively a runoff ratio). This data release supports the publication "Sub-annual streamflow responses to rainfall and snowmelt inputs in snow-dominated watersheds of the western U.S." in Water Resources Research.

These data describe the types and locations of wood mills in the Western United States which might purchase logs or wood chips for primary processing. The mill location data here update and expand the spatial scope of several earlier datasets.

Map of nesting habitat selection scores predicted from a resource selection function (RSF) developed from sage-grouse nest locations. Nest site selection was modeled using a generalized linear mixed model of used and random locations in a Bayesian modeling environment, and the midpoint of coefficient conditional posterior distributions were used for prediction. Continuous values were reclassified and ranked using a percent isopleth approach with respect to observed nest locations.
A complete set of wells associated with oil, natural gas, and coal bed natural gas development in the western states as of Nov 2007. This is a static dataset even though liquid energy development is a highly dynamic endeavor. Because these well location datasets are generally housed and managed by various state-based agencies (typically the state Oil and Gas Conservation Commissions) a uniform, spatially precise coverage for the western United States has not been available to date. This layer consolidates the best available well location data from ND, SD, MT, WY, CO, NM, UT, AZ, OR, and CA (ID and WA do not report any liquid energy development) and standardizes the attributites. While static as of Nov 2007 the well...

The National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) utilizes a fault sections database (FSD) throughout the model workflow. Working towards a 2023 NSHM release, the NSHM23 FSD encompasses a major update with the addition of new fault sections, as well as the revision of existing fault sections from prior FSD (2014). The additions and revisions were largely based on the U.S. Geological Survey's Quaternary Faults and Folds Database (QFFD). The nshm-faultmaps.ipynb Jupyter Notebook (Python code) provides users with a visual, side-by-side comparison of fault representations from the QFFD, NSHM14 FSD and NSHM23 FSD. The code downloads the fault sections databases to the user's computer and plots maps of each fault based on the...
