These data were collected using field portable (handheld) X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) equipped with a 4-watt Ta/Au X-ray tube. Samples of surficial alluvium, rock, and archived core material from existing auger- or sonic-drilled monitoring wells in Hinkley Valley and the adjoining Water Valley, 140 kilometers (km) northeast of Los Angeles, California, were measured as part of an investigation of naturally-occurring and anthropogenic hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), concentrations in local groundwater. Surficial alluvium samples were collected from small stream channels draining distinct geologic units, or from previously mapped river deposits, and generally consisted of silt, sand, and granules to small pebbles. Twigs...

This data release is part of a larger data release including data collected in the pursuit of identifying pre- and post-colonial riparian ecosystems found throughout Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA. A single raster file is included, and represents a topological classification of the entire county according to a hydrologically conditioned Digital Elevation Model (DEM). These data were generated through the use of r.geomorphon, a GRASS GIS toolkit, to classify local terrain conditions into one of ten distinct landforms called geomorphons.

The U.S. Geological Survey New Jersey Water Science Center (USGS NJWSC) in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has assembled this data release in support of ongoing USGS and NJDEP evaluations related to the occurrence and distribution of elevated trace elements, particularly arsenic (As) and vanadium (V), in Inner Coastal Plain soils and sediments of New Jersey. The data for four sediment cores are presented, and the data types include: 1. Site locations and general characteristics for the four sediment cores collected during the study; 2. Lithologic descriptions of each sediment core; 3. Portable handheld X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data for each sediment core (every 6...

This page contains (a) bulk synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectra; (b) microbeam synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence maps and spectra; and (c) microbeam Raman spectra (and corresponding optical images). These data were used to understand chromium, iron, and manganese valence and mineral residence in natural and synthetic mineral mixtures used in laboratory experiments designed to simulate dynamic conditions in an engineered aquifer system [see Izbicki and Groover (2018) and Miller and others (2020)].

This child page contains: (a) qualitative compositional data for 3 elements (chromium, manganese, and iron) as determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry using a portable instrument (“pXRF”) mounted in a test stand in the laboratory and (b) quantitative compositional data for up to 60 elements (some not reported quantitatively) determined by chemical digestion (sodium peroxide fusion) followed by inductively-coupled plasma-optical emission or inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and (c) quantitative total organic carbon data. The pXRF data collected after July 22, 2019 presented here is subject to secondary data review as required by the Energy and Minerals Mission Area Quality Management System (EMMA...

This data release documents chemical analyses of environmental samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Lakeport (Lake County, California) during July 11-12, 2022. Environmental samples were collected at selected sites to assess the effects of lead-based paint on soil chemistry. This sampling was made as part of a broader study to attribute sources of lead in soils in cooperation with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for their Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Facility Investigation and Cleanup (LABRIC) program. Results of soil sampling and chemical analyses are included in the data-release component entitled "Soils chemistry from selected sites in Lakeport, Lake County, California"...

These data on the concentrations of 27 selected elements were collected using a field portable (handheld) X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) instrument (Groover and Izbicki, 2016) equipped with a 4-watt Ta/Au X-ray tube on samples of 1) surficial alluvium, 2) rock, and 3) archived core material and drill cuttings from monitoring wells across an approximately 14,300 square kilometer area in the western part of the Mojave Desert, between 60 to 210 kilometers (km) northeast of Los Angeles, California. These samples were measured using a pXRF as part of a regional-scale investigation of naturally-occurring trace elements (including arsenic, chromium, and uranium) dissolved in groundwater (Groover and Izbicki, 2018), and a local-scale...

This data release includes data collected in the pursuit of identifying pre- and post-colonial riparian ecosystems found throughout Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA. Two comma-delimited tables are included. The first documents pollen records at various depths identified within sediment samples taken throughout the county's floodplains. The other describes morphological information identifying tree species found buried in-situ throughout the county.

This collection consists of rock samples associated with the research of USGS scientist Alfred Miesch. Miesch was an early contributor to USGS geochemistry research and many of these samples are associated with his research. In 1953 Dr. Miesch began a 33-year career with the Survey. His work in Grand Junction, CO involved research on the distribution of minor elements in association with uranium on the Colorado Plateau. He moved to Denver in 1959 where he continued his work on element distributions in rocks, soils, and plants, ultimately becoming Chief of the Branch of Geochemical Census, which he later renamed Branch of Regional Geochemistry. In this capacity he began a working relationship with scientists in the...

This data release contains macro and microscale datasets describing the abundance, valence states, and mineral residence(s) of chromium, iron, and manganese in natural and synthetic mineral mixtures used in laboratory experiments designed to simulate dynamic conditions in an engineered aquifer system [see Izbicki and Groover (2018) and Miller and others (2020)]. The landing page contains primary metadata about this release and an overview "sample information" table containing descriptions of samples, their analyses, and their methods of preparation and preservation. As there is not a one-to-one correlation between samples and types of analyses performed, the overview table is an important navigation tool to locate...

This data release contains analytical data and images for a suite of drill core samples from the Mineral Hill alkaline complex (MHAC), northeastern Wyoming. Geochemistry data include major and trace element analytical results for 103 alkaline igneous rock samples. Images include hand sample photographs of halved core and full thin section images captured in transmitted, plane-polarized and cross-polarized light. Samples are from two core holes drilled by Humble Oil Company in 1970, and subsequently acquired and stored by Felix Mutschler at Eastern Washington University. The two skeletonized (incomplete) drill cores were acquired by the U.S. Geological Survey Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Spokane office...
