The Great Lakes Research Vessel Catch (RVCAT) database is managed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). RVCAT has been used as the primary data collection tool aboard the GLSC’s research vessel operations across the Great Lakes. Content: The data set has been collected on various vessel operations on all the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways between the years 1930-2021. Data collection begins in early spring and ends in late fall. Each vessel operation was completed for a specific purpose, or target mission. Data Structure: These data are collected at the GLSC in the RVCAT Oracle database. This database has been broken down into comma separated value (csv) spreadsheets in order to facilitate greater...
Recent declines in Lake Whitefish population abundance has prompted research to identify underlying mechanisms controlling survival of early life stages in the Great Lakes. In Lake Erie, the recruitment bottleneck window determining year class strength of Lake Whitefish occurs during the first growing season, suggesting that availability of prey could be controlling year class strength. Therefore, spatial and seasonal larval Lake Whitefish distribution, diet, and environmental zooplankton (potential prey) were collected to evaluate larval Lake Whitefish diets at 31 locations in the western basin during 2017, 2018, and 2021. We removed gut tracks of larval lake whitefish and identified diet items to lowest possible...
Includes: Seasonal data on Zooplankton - biomass data were obtained from the COPEPOD database (NOAA) for 1977-2007, Chlorophyll - measured to determine phytoplankton concentration, Sea Surface Temperature - data were extracted from three dimensional climatologies representing 28 years from 1980 - 2007, averaged, and interpolated with ordinary kriging to produce a smooth surface, and Stratification - data helps describe the physical environment of the water column near the surface. These data help to understand the seasonal patterns of mixing and stratification that help to determine areas of high productivity and benthic-pelagic coupling.

These data have been collected on various vessel operations on the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways. This vessel operations data set is part of and connected to a larger database of Great Lakes research that includes trawl and gillnet catch data, sample information of fish species caught, as well as effort applied, operation conditions, and location details. The larger database also contains data on hydroacoustics, ichthyoplankton, zooplankton, zebra mussel, and benthos samples collected. Multiple operations were conducted on all Great Lakes each year (1958-2016) beginning in early spring and ending in late fall. Each vessel operation was completed for a specific purpose, or target mission, which are...
During two seasonal sampling events in spring (June) and fall (August) of 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, collected benthos (benthic invertebrates) and plankton (zooplankton and phytoplankton) at three sites each in the Waukegan Harbor Area of Concern (AOC) in Illinois and in Burns Harbor-Port of Indiana, a non-AOC, in Indiana. Physical and chemical data were sampled concurrently (specific conductance, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll-a, total and volatile suspended solids in water samples; particle size and volatile-on-ignition solids of sediment in benthic grab samples). Benthos were collected...

Zooplankton samples were collected at a site in the Yolo Bypass in Northern California and at a comparison site on the Sacramento River below the city of Sacramento and analyzed for a large suite of current-use pesticides and degradates. Samples were collected biweekly in the summer/fall 2017 and 2018, and from May 2019−March 2020. Samples were collected by towing a 150-micron conical plankton net for 5 minutes by boat at each site. In the laboratory, zooplankton samples were filtered through a 63-micrometer sieve to separate the zooplankton and vegetation/detritus from the water. Large sticks, twigs, rocks, and leaves were rinsed with organic free water into the sieve and then discarded. The remaining mass in the...

In 2014, the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station participated in the Coordinated Science and Monitoring Initiative (CMSI) program, a program founded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Environment Canada in the 1990s as a means to focus collaborative research attention on one of the five Great Lakes each year (on a rotating schedule) as a means to increase scientific knowledge for Great Lakes restoration. The Lake Erie survey examined the food web across a nearshore to offshore gradient, matching the sampling design the preceding USGS studies of the other four Great Lakes (2010-2013). We sampled all trophic levels in all three lake basins across multiple seasons in order to determine nutrient availability...

The St. Clair River delta, part of the St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS), is the most fished coastal wetland area in the Laurentian Great Lakes and provides nursery habitat for a variety of fish species; however, few large-scale surveys of early fish life stages have been performed since the 1980s. Larval fish, zooplankton, and aquatic plants were sampled at 21 sites in delta channels and backwaters of the St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS; USA/CAN) from May to July in 2010 and 2011 to characterize the habitats and resources used by larval fish in the delta. Larval fish were captured using conical nets and light traps, and diets from larval white sucker (Catostomus commersonii) were collected at three sites.

This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release provides data collected from Nolin Lake Kentucky, during 2016 to 2017. Two types of data are reported: zooplankton and phytoplankton data are raw calculated values not rounded to USGS significant figures and continuous water-quality data collected with a multi-parameter sonde. The zooplankton, phytoplankton, and water-quality data describe a swarm of the invasive cladoceran Daphnia lumholtzi (D. lumholtzi) Sars, 1885 in a Kentucky USA reservoir during midwinter 2017.
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data from Upper Klamath Lake, OR from 5/11/2020 - 9/30/2020 from ten sites and zooplankton data from Upper Klamath Lake, OR from 5/11/2020 - 10/14/2020 from eight sites. Phytoplankton data are reported to the lowest possible taxonomic level and biovolume, biomass, and density are reported. Zooplankton data are reported to the lowest possible taxonomic level, biomass and density are also reported.

Limited information is known regarding the rotifer community on the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). Studies have shown that rotifers are a common prey for invasive bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix) as well as native fishes of the UMR and there is concern these invasive carp will compete with native fishes for food resources. This study was conducted to provide baseline rotifer community data before range expansion of these invasive carps into the upper reaches of the UMR. Vertical tows were taken to collect rotifer samples over a four year period in Lake Pepin, a natural riverine lake in Pool 4 of the UMR. Four dominant genera (Keratella, Polyarthra, Trichocerca and Brachionus)...

Description of Work Since the early 2000s, the LaMP has proposed adding nutrients (specifically phosphorus) to its “pollutant of concern” list, given that excessive nutrients were believed to cause impairments in the nearshore waters. Since that time, scientists have highlighted the “shunting” of nutrients to the nearshore, owing to the ability of invasive dreissenid mussels to capture some portion of allochthanous phosphorus that enters the lake through tributaries. These changes are believed to underlie a series of changes in the nearshore, including increased biomass of cladophora and hypothesized increases in benthic and pelagic biomass, including zooplankton and fish. As an extension, this model proposes the...

Suspended particles are an essential component of large rivers influencing channel geomorphology, biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, and food web resources. The Upper Mississippi River (UMR) is a large floodplain river that exhibits pronounced spatiotemporal variation in environmental conditions and biota, providing an ideal environment for investigating dynamics of suspended particles in large river ecosystems. Here we investigated two questions: (1) How do suspended particle characteristics (e.g., size and morphology) vary temporally and spatially? and (2) What environmental variables have the strongest association with particle characteristics? Water sampling was conducted in June, August, and September of...
