The Sauk River, a fedrally designated Wild and Scenic River, is one of the few large glacier-fed rivers in western Washington that is unconstrained by dams and drains a relatively pristine landscape which includes Glacier Peak, a glaciated stratovolcano. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a 5-year study (2012-2016 water years) of suspended-sediment and water temperature monitoring for the purpose of determining suspended-sediment loads and identifying sediment production regimes and associated seasonality of sediment transport. Tidal water discharge within two breaches constructed in a former flood-control levee of a restored agricultural area in Port Susan, Washington, was measured repeatedly during several tidal cycles. Measurements were made on March 27, 2014, April 16, 2014, May 18, 2014, and May 29, 2014 at breach PSB1, and on May 29, 2014 at breach PSB2. These data were collected using a boat-mounted Teledyne RDI RiverRay 600 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) or a Teledyne RDI StreamPro 2000 kHz ADCP, depending on date. ADCP transect data were collected and initially reviewed using WinRiver II software and reprocessing and final review was completed with QRev software.

This data release provides suspended-sediment (concentration and load) and water temperature data for two locations along the Suiattle River (USGS 1217900 and 12188380) and a tributary, Downey Creek (USGS 1217985) in Washington State for partial periods over 2013-2017. Suspended-sediment and water temperature data were collected over two summer seasons from May through September 2016 and 2017 at USGS 1217900. Suspended-sediment and water temperature data were collected that approximately covers the Water Year 2017, extending from October 24, 2016 to November 16, 2017 at USGS 1217985. Suspended-sediment and water temperature data were collected from December 2013 through September 2017 at USGS 12188380.

Two large dams were removed from the Elwha River in Washington, starting in 2011 and ending in 2014. The Elwha and the Glines Canyon dams were located approximately 7 km and 20 km upstream, respectively, from the Elwha River's mouth on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The dams trapped over 20 million cubic meters of sediment. Dam removal changed the river's sediment budget and water flow, which affected the river's morphology. Water temperature and the availability of cold-water refugia are important parameters during summer baseflows when stream water temperatures are at their maximum. The U.S. Geological Survey measured near-streambed and surface water temperatures along the lower Quinault River, on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington between August 9-12, 2016, during summer baseflow conditions. The survey occurred downstream from Lake Quinault from approximately River Kilometer (RK) 4 to approximately RK 49 (45 kilometers total).
