This U.S. Geological Survey data release provides a comprehensive dataset of water-quality data and sampling-site characteristics collected in 1978–2018 during a study of the effects of land disposal of treated wastewater on groundwater quality in an unconsolidated sand and gravel aquifer on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Treated sewage-derived wastewater was discharged to rapid-infiltration beds at Joint Base Cape Cod for nearly 60 years before the disposal was moved to a different location in December 1995. The discharge formed a plume of contaminated groundwater that partly discharges to a glacial kettle lake about 1,600 feet from the beds and extends about 4.5 miles toward coastal saltwater bodies at Vineyard Sound....
The Russian River watershed is an important resource for drinking water and recreation. Sonoma Water relies on the Russian River to provide drinking water to over 620,000 Sonoma County and Marin, CA residents. Nearly 1 million visitors enjoy numerous recreational opportunities on the Russian River annually. Wildfires have increased in frequency and intensity in Northern California and research is ongoing to address water-quality impacts during post-fire rainstorm events, including increased loading of sediments, nutrients, major ions, and metals. Our objectives are: • A better understanding of bacteria-contaminant interactions in ground water, because of the persistence of many contaminants in the subsurface environment and because of increasing demands for both high-quality ground water and on-land disposal of toxic chemicals. • A better understanding of microbial transport through the terrestrial subsurface because of the implications for public health (microbial contamination of wells) and because of its roles in groundwater ecology and in the fate of groundwater contaminants.

These datasets contain microbial community data from groundwater samples collected at an in situ bioremediation site located at the former Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. DNA was extracted from groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells at the NAWC study site from July 2008 through July 2015 and analyzed for microbial community structure. Sample collection coincided with a groundwater bioremediation experiment investigating the microbial degradation of the contaminant trichloroethylene (TCE) prevalent in the targeted region of the aquifer. The Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA) supplies drinking water to over 600,000 Sonoma County and Marin County, CA residents and relies on a combination of Russian River water and surrounding groundwater. SCWA employs natural removal processes of riverbank filtration (RBF) to provide pretreatment before the river water is chlorinated and distributed in the drinking water system. In addition, SCWA employs an inflatable damn on a seasonal basis to increase water supply at the RBF site.
