Rainwater Harvesting and Stormwater Research is a priority research area identified by the Arizona Governor’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Water Sustainability, which recommended that universities take the lead to identify regulatory barriers, cost and benefits, water quality issues and avenues for increasing utilization of stormwater and rainwater at the regional, community and individual property level. The Morongo Basin Conservation Priority Setting Project was undertaken between 2008 and 2010 as part of ongoing efforts to support the basin’s long-term development and conservation. Project efforts are based on goals that originate in community values and are grounded in conservation science. This report presents the results of the project. It is intended to serve as a resource guide to inform conservation choices and support planning activities in the basin. It is our hope that the choices and decisions made as a result of our priority setting will respect our “backyard” desert landscapes while supporting the social and economic well-being of basin communities over the long term.

Sky Island Alliance (SIA) is a non-governmental organizational that works to protect and restore the rich natural heritage of native species and habitats in the Sky Island Region. We work with volunteers, scientists, land-owners, public officials, and government agencies to establish protected areas, restore healthy landscapes, and promote public appreciation of the region’s unique biological diversity. Many amenity-rich regions are experiencing rapid land-use change in the form of low-density residential development. This widespread land-use change, exurbanization, has profound implications for regional biological diversity and ecosystem function. In the United States, exurban land use occupies seven times more area than land with urban and suburban densities, and has increased at a rate of about 10 to 15% per year. A bi-national team was convened in 1998 to compile and analyze biological and ecological data for the 55-million acre (22 million ha) Sonoran Desert Ecoregion, which comprises parts of Arizona, California, Sonora, and Baja, California.
