The Gap Analysis Program (GAP) Land Cover Viewer displays data on the vegetation and land use patterns of the continental United States. The GAP Land Cover Data Version 2.2 provides detailed information on the vegetation of the United States using consistent satellite base data and classification systems. This allows data users to make conservation or land use planning decisions for the entire range of a habitat type across administrative boundaries. GAP Land Cover Data Version 2.2 combines ecological system data from previous GAP projects in the Southwest, Southeast, and Northwest United States with recently updated California data. For Alaska ,and areas of the continental United States, where ecological system-level...

The Natural Resources Conservation Service ( NRCS ) - National Cartography and Geospatial Center ( NCGC ) previously archived and distributed the Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO) Database. Only file downloads were available from this site. This limited the amount of soil survey information that could be accessed. The NRCS - NCGC also supplied SSURGO data to the United States Department of Agriculture - Service Center Agencies (Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Rural Development) Geospatial Data Gateway . While the Gateway provides file downloads, a customer can also order SSURGO data on CD-ROM or DVD. The NRCS Soil Survey Division recognized that increased functionality for...

The Colorado pikeminnow, razorback sucker, humpback chub and bonytail are endangered fish species that once thrived in the Colorado River system. Dam installation and the introduction of nonnative fish changed the river environment and put these fish at risk. Established in 1988, the Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program is a partnership of public and private organizations working to recover these endangered species while allowing continued and future water development.

In March 1983, President Reagan signed a proclamation establishing an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) extending the 200 nautical mile from the coasts of the United States, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. territories and possessions. In 1984, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a program to map these areas of the EEZ To accomplish the mapping of the deepwater portion (depths greater than 400 m) of this area, the USGS selected the long-range sidescan sonar system GLORIA (Geological LOng-Range Inclined Asdic). At that time the GLORIA system was owned and operated by British colleagues at the United Kingdom's Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS), now the Southampton Oceanography Centre,...

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) has historically been a home to boreal toads (Bufo boreas boreas). Since the 1970s the number of toad populations in Colorado and in the Park has declined. Now there are only three locations where breeding is occurring in RMNP. The USGS Fort Collins Science Center has been studying boreal toads in RMNP for over 15 years and has documented population declines coincident with the detection of the amphibian chytrid fungus...

Soils is part of the National Cooperative Soil Survey, an effort of Federal and State agencies, universities, and professional societies to deliver science-based soil information. This website includes a vast array of information and data access tools for soils including Web Soil Survey, Soil Data Viewer, and the Soil Survey Extent Mapping Tool.
In more arid regions, vegetative cover is generally sparse. Open spaces are usually covered by biological soil crusts, a highly specialized community of cyanobacteria, mosses, and lichens (Figure 1). Biological soil crusts are commonly found in semiarid and arid environments throughout the world. Areas in the United States where crusts are a prominent feature of the landscape include the Great Basin, Colorado Plateau, Sonoran Desert, and the inner Columbia Basin. Crusts are also found in agricultural areas, native prairies, and Alaska (Figure 2). Outside the United States, crusts have been studied in the Antarctic, Australia, and Israel, among other locations. In fact, microbiotic crusts have been found on all continents...

The environmental effects of mineral deposits on watersheds are a complex and poorly understood function of local and regional geology and hydrology, deposit type, climate, and the ecosystem of the watershed. If the deposits are developed, mining techniques, methods of ore processing and tailings disposal, and metal mobility from dumps and tailings also contribute to the environmental signature. All of these processes contribute to the widely observed phenomenon that the environmental "footprint" of a mineral deposit is much larger than the deposit itself. While the spatial extent of a mineral deposit can be determined with some certainty by exploration drilling, mining, and other methods, the spatial...

This map layer contains hydrologic unit boundaries and codes for the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was revised for inclusion in the National Atlas of the United States of America, and updated to match the streams file created by the USGS National Mapping Division (NMD) for the National Atlas of the United States of America. This is a revised version of the November 2002 map layer.
