Static flood inundation boundary extents were created along the entire shoreline of Lake Ontario in Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, and Wayne Counties in New York by using recently acquired (2007, 2010, 2014, and 2017) light detection and ranging (lidar) data. The flood inundation maps, accessible through the USGS Flood Inundation Mapping Program website at https://www.usgs.gov/mission-areas/water-resources/science/flood-inundation-mapping-fim-program, depict estimates of the areal extent and water depth of shoreline flooding in 8 segments corresponding to adjacent water-surface elevations (stages) at 8 USGS lake gages on Lake Ontario. This item includes data sets for segment G - Lake Ontario...

This map is part of a series of online U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) publications, each of which includes several map sheets, some explanatory text, and a descriptive pamphlet. Each map sheet is published as a PDF file. Geographic information system (GIS) files that contain both ESRI2 ArcGIS raster grids (for example, bathymetry, seafloor character) and geotiffs (for example, shaded relief) are also included for each publication. For those who do not own the full suite of ESRI GIS and mapping software, the data can be read using ESRI ArcReader, a free viewer that is available at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcreader/index.html (last accessed March 27, 2016). The map area offshore of the city of Half Moon Bay, California, which is referred to herein as the “Offshore of Half Moon Bay” map area is located in northern California, on the Pacific Coast of the San Francisco Peninsula about 40 kilometers south of the Golden Gate. The city of Half Moon Bay (population, about 11,000) is the nearest significant onshore cultural cente. The Pillar Point Harbor at the north edge of Half Moon Bay offers a protected landing for boats and provides other marine infrastructure. The harbor, which was formed by the construction of two riprap jetties, is managed by the San Mateo County Harbor District. The harbor has 369 berthing slips and supports a commercial fishing fleet and search-and-rescue...

The Offshore Santa Barbara Map Area lies within the eastern Santa Barbara Channel portion of the Southern California Bight. This geologically complex region forms a major biogeographic transition zone, separating the cold-temperate Oregonian Province north of Point Conception from the warm-temperate California Province to the south. Onshore of the map area, the city of Santa Barbara (population ~92,000) is the main coastal population center; it is part of a contiguous urban area that extends from Carpinteria to Goleta with a population of about 220,000. This urban area was developed south of the west-trending Santa Ynes Mountains on coalescing alluvial surfaces, uplifted marine terraces, and low west-trending hills...

In 2007, the California Ocean Protection Council initiated the California Seafloor Mapping Program (CSMP), designed to create a comprehensive seafloor map of high-resolution bathymetry, marine benthic habitats, and geology within the 3-nautical-mile limit of California’s State Waters. The CSMP approach is to create highly detailed seafloor maps through collection, integration, interpretation, and visualization of swath sonar data, acoustic backscatter, seafloor video, seafloor photography, high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles, and bottom-sediment sampling data. The map products display seafloor morphology and character, identify potential marine benthic habitats, and illustrate both the surficial seafloor...

Maps on sheet 9 show the thickness and the depth to base of uppermost Pleistocene and Holocene (post-LGM) deposits, both for the Offshore of San Gregorio map area and, to establish regional context, for a larger area (about 91 km of coast) that extends from the Bolinas area to the Pescadero Point area. To make these maps, water bottom and depth to base of the LGM horizons were mapped from seismic-reflection profiles using Seisworks software. The difference between the two horizons was exported from Seisworks for every shot point as XY coordinates (UTM zone 10) and two-way travel time (TWT). The thickness of the post-LGM unit was determined by applying a sound velocity of 1,600 m/sec to the TWT, resulting in thicknesses...

Streamflow permanence probability rasters, 2004-2011. Version 2.0. Predicted probability of streamflow permanence, values between dry (0) and wet (1).
This data release provides the georeferenced boundaries that delimit each spatial unit of the Great Lakes Regional Aquatic Gap Analysis Project (GLGap) Coastal Hydrospatial Framework at each spatial scale from the local 90m cell to the entire Laurentian Great Lakes system and from the shoreline to the deepest offshore waters. The U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service collaborated to design a universal framework of spatial areas that encompass all space of the Laurentian Great Lakes proper. Agglomeration of the finest units (90m cells) form coarser, broader scale units. Finer units are nested within the coarser units at six spatial scales, labeled as Local Cells, Aquatic Habitat Areas, Coastal...

Almost all the pictures acquired by Mariner 10 that were used for mapping were obtained during the first encounter: those covering the southeast half of the quadrangle are incoming close-encounter images, and those covering the north-west corner are outoing close-encounter images. At the time the pictures were obtained, the terminator was at about long 7° to 8°, within the eastern part of the quadrangle. A large gap in coverage between in the incoming and outgoing images appears as a northeast-trending diagonal blank strip on the base map. A small part of this gap was filled in the southwestern part of the quadrangle by very poor second-encounter images.

Karst hydrologic systems are important resources in the state of Tennessee both as drinking water resources and as centers for possible biological diversity. These systems are susceptible to contamination due to the inherent connectivity between surface water and groundwater systems in karst systems. A partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Tennessee Department of Conservation (TDEC) was formed to investigate karst spring systems across the state utilizing fluorescent groundwater tracing, particularly in areas where these resources may be used as drinking water sources. In fall 2021, USGS and TDEC staff identified possible vulnerabilities or complexities that may exist within karst spring systems...

This dataset contains measures of seasonal mean bird stopover densities and in seasonal mean bird density based on weather surveillance radar data from 20 radar locations in the Northeast U.S. across seven autumn migrations (15 August through 7 November of 2008-2014) [six autumn migrations for the terminal doppler weather radar (15 August through 7 November of 2009-2014)]. Data are present only in radar-sampled areas for each individual radar (see below for description on how these data are filtered). If you are interested in a continuous map of bird stopover densities for the entire region (and outside of these radar coverage areas), refer to layer “Predicted autumn migratory landbird density, 1km, Northeast U.S.”.The...

UPDATE 9/24/2014. Resilience concerns the ability of a living system to adjust to climate change, to moderate potential damages, to take advantage of opportunities, or to cope with consequences; in short, its capacity to adapt. In this project we aim to identify the most resilient examples of key geophysical settings (e.g. sand plains, granite mountains, limestone valleys, etc.) to provide conservationists with a nuanced picture of the places where conservation is most likely to succeed over centuries. The project had three parts: 1) identifying and mapping the geophysical settings, 2) developing a quantitative estimate of resilience for each setting based on landscape complexity and permeability, and 3) identifying...
