This dataset describes the location of channel heads survyed in two headwater watersheds in Clarksburg, Montgomery County, Maryland, and the digital elevation models derived from light detection and ranging (lidar) covering the two watersheds. The digital elevation models were used to derive topographic attributes used to delineate drainage networks that were then assessed for accuracy using the field-surveyed channel heads. Provided are data containing condition assessments on individual giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum; SEGI) stems and post-fire regeneration counts within Board Camp, Suwanee, New Oriole Lake, Homer’s Nose, and a subset of Redwood Mountain and Dillonwood groves of Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, respectively. Stem data contain condition-related attributes (e.g., spatial location, diameter breast height, status - live or dead, percent canopy that is live, scorched or torched). Regeneration plots are located using a spatially-balanced sampling design (Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified - 'GRTS'). Each regeneration plot is a fixed radius circle (11.35 meters or 17.84 meters) and contain count data...

Using data from 288 adult and yearling female elk that were captured on 22 winter supplemental elk feedgrounds in Wyoming and monitored with GPS collars from 2007 - 2015, we fit Step Selection Functions (SSFs) during the spring abortion season and then implemented a master equation approach to translate SSFs into predictions of daily elk distribution for five plausible winter weather scenarios (from a heavy snow, to an extreme winter drought year). We predicted elk abortion events by combining elk distributions with empirical estimates of daily abortion rates, spatially varying elk seroprevalence, and elk population counts. Here we provide 1) the adult and yearling female elk GPS collar data used to fit SSFs, 2)...
This dataset is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Restoration Assessment (GLCWRA) initiative. These data represent the location of dikes within the Upper Peninsula Restoration Assessment (UPRA) study area. An ArcGIS model (Python script) identified dikes as having a difference in elevation above a certain threshold. If the elevation difference was below a certain threshold, the area was not considered a dike. However, if the difference in elevation between two points was significantly high, then the area was marked as a dike. Areas continuous with each other were considered part of the same dike. Data underwent quality control (QC) procedures by having Subject Matter Experts and...
Summary of Bering and Chukchi Seas seabird necropsies, 2017-2021. More than 14,000 dead seabirds were reported and a total of 117 carcasses were examined. 92 cases had emaciation identified as the Cause Of Death (COD), seven cases where COD was undetermined, and 17 cases where COD was determined as "Other", which included predation, trauma, encephalitis, peritonitis, and bacterial infection. Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (n=4) and saxitoxin (n=15) were also detected; however, the virus and biotoxin were not determined to be the COD except for one case in 2020 where saxitoxin toxicosis was suspected.

This dataset consists of raster geotiff outputs from modeling habitat change, marsh vertical accretion, and carbon accumulation in the Nisqually River Delta, Washington, USA. These rasters represent projections of future habitat type, change in surface elevation above Mean Sea Level, and total sediment carbon accumulation since 2011 in coastal wetland habitats. Projections were generated in 20-year increments for 100 years for five amounts of sea-level rise, three amounts of suspended sediment concentrations, and two alternative configurations of the U.S. Interstate-5 causeway as it crosses the Nisqually River to either prevent or allow inland habitat migration (a total of 30 scenarios). The full methods and results...

Invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) occur in large regions of the Mississippi River drainage, outcompete native species, and are notorious for their prolific jumping behavior. Juvenile and adult (up to 25 kg) carp are known to jump up to 3 m above the water surface in response to moving watercraft. Broadband sound recorded from an outboard motor (100 hp at 32 km/hr) can modulate their behavior in captivity; however, the response of wild silver carp to broadband sound has yet to be determined. This data set includes information regarding the sound produced by outboard motor and speakers in the field and will help in determining effectiveness of the usage of control techniques in the management of carps.
Management actions intended to increase growth and survival of pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) age-0 larvae on the Lower Missouri River require a comprehensive understanding of the geomorphic habitat template of the river. The datasets described here are intended to support decisions relating to where channel-reconfiguration projects should be located to optimize effectiveness of interception rearing complexes (IRCs). The bend-scale geomorphic classification of the Lower Missouri River is intended to help in the design of monitoring and evaluation of IRC projects. The bend-scale classification was based on geomorphic and engineering variables for 257 bends from Sioux City, Iowa to the confluence with the...

This child data release includes field spectra and in situ measurements of turbidity and Rhodamine WT dye concentration acquired during an experiment performed at the USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center, near Columbia, Missouri, on April 2, 2019. The purpose of the experiment was to assess the feasibility of inferring concentrations of a visible dye (Rhodamine WT) tracer from various types of remotely sensed data in water with varying levels of turbidity. Whereas previous research on remote sensing of tracer dye concentrations has focused on clear-flowing streams, the Missouri River is much more turbid and the reflectance signal associated with the sediment-laden water could obscure that related to the...

Suspended particles are an essential component of large rivers influencing channel geomorphology, biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, and food web resources. The Upper Mississippi River (UMR) is a large floodplain river that exhibits pronounced spatiotemporal variation in environmental conditions and biota, providing an ideal environment for investigating dynamics of suspended particles in large river ecosystems. Here we investigated two questions: (1) How do suspended particle characteristics (e.g., size and morphology) vary temporally and spatially? and (2) What environmental variables have the strongest association with particle characteristics? Water sampling was conducted in June, August, and September of...

To help determine when winter conditions were changing to spring conditions annually in our four study areas, we determined the first eight-day interval (in accordance with the scale limitations of satellite data we used to assess the presence of snow) during which the first amphibian of the season called at each of our study wetlands in those areas. To do this, we examined contour plots of summaries of all the acoustic data we collected at that site in a given year to identify the unique call signatures of individual amphibian species by date and time. When necessary due to potential confounding on a contour plot, we also examined relevant individual five-minute recordings aurally and visually to confirm whether...

The sampling locations provided here were selected as a two-stage Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified (GRTS) sample (Stevens & Olsen 2004). The first stage of the GRTS draw used a master sample developed by the North American Bat Monitoring Program (Loeb et al. 2015) from a 10 x 10 km grid placed over the conterminous U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Each 10 x 10 km grid cell (hereafter, master cell) was assigned a GRTS rank by NABat. The rank represents the priority order in which master cells should ideally be sampled. For the second stage of the draw, sampling points within a master cell were selected. Each point was defined as a 30 x 30 m cell of the GIS raster that defined monarch-relevant habitat. Sampling...

Breeding common loons for the movement and foraging pattern study were obtained from lakes in central and northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan during summers 2010-2012. Both adults of a territorial pair were fitted with archival geolocator tags (Model LAT 2500; 34.6 x 8.3 mm, 4.4 g; Lotek Wireless Inc.). A combination of adhesive and plastic cable ties were used to affix the geolocator tag to a modified lock-on aluminum leg band. Tags were programmed to collect daily location estimates for up to two years, tag temperature (0.02o C accuracy, ≤ 0.05o C resolution) at 30-min intervals, and pressure data (±1% accuracy, 0.05% resolution) at 20-sec intervals during daylight hours to document...
