The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation – Natural Heritage Program (DCRDNH) and the Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI) at Florida State University (collectively, Project Partners) were funded by the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (SALCC) in April 2015 to develop ten species distribution models (SDM) of priority at-risk and range-restricted species (Ambystoma cingulatum, Echinacea laevigata, Heterodon simus, Lindera melissifolia, Lythrum curtissii, Notophthalmus perstriatus, Phemeranthus piedmontanus, Rhus michauxii, and Schwalbea americana) for the purposes of incorporating the models and supporting information on the conservation and management needs of the species into the...

This GIS layer predicts annual increases in water yield in gallons/acre when going from a longleaf stand that hasn’t been burned for 10+ years to one with a burn within the last 6 years. It uses PRISM data for precipitation, MODIS data for potential evapotranspiration, and field data from North Florida to estimate difference in evapotranspiration based on fire return interval. It uses the equations in the WASSI ecosystem services model to estimate change in water yield (https://www.fs.usda.gov/ccrc/tools/wassi).Note: this layer covers the historic range of longleaf but does not mask out areas within that range unlikely to support longleaf (e.g., lakes, freshwater wetlands, etc.).Input data Potential evapotranspiration...

About This Project Open woodlands dominated by southern yellow pine were historically a large component of the landscape across the southeastern United States. These woodlands have an open canopy of longleaf, slash, shortleaf, and/or loblolly pines, with scattered shrubs and a grassy understory. These southern open pine ecosystems support many species of wildlife, many of which have declined in recent years as the amount and condition of their habitat has declined. This troubling decline in wildlife species has led to a focus on regional conservation efforts by America’s Longleaf, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Landscape Conservation Cooperatives, state wildlife agencies, the U.S. Forest Service, National...

EARTH SCIENCE > BIOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION > PLANTS,
The proposed project focuses upon two major goals:1. Designate Priority Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Areas (PARCAs) in the South Atlantic Landscape, and develop an adaptive management plan for those areas.2. Determine whether PARCAs provide an effective strategy for integrated, long-term conservation of biodiversity and cultural resources in the South Atlantic Landscape; and develop a comprehensive biodiversity protection plan for the SALCC.To achieve these goals, we have identified the following objectives:Objective 1. Identify areas within the SALCC that are vitally important to preserving the rich diversity of amphibians and reptiles in the region, focusing upon rare species distribution, diversity, and...

Greenways and trails This layer is a draft landscapes indicator for use in a future version of the South Atlantic and Southeast Blueprints. It is an index that evaluates the natural condition and connected length of greenways and trails. Reason for Selection This indicator captures the recreational value and opportunities to connect with nature provided by greenways and trails. Greenways and trails provide many well-established social and economic benefits (ITRE 2018). Supplemental Legend Info Monitoring Approach Locations of greenways and trails are regularly updated through the open source database OpenStreetMap. Data on condition are updated every 5 years through the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). ...
