The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) recognizes the need for a strong data foundation to inform science-based decisions for fisheries management at a watershed level. In preparation for a shift towards comprehensive watershed-scale planning, AGFD is developing a fisheries data management system with an initial focus on compiling and formatting several hundred thousand fish survey and stocking records. A combination of citizen science inventories and expert assessments will be used to collect critical baseline information on known spring and seep resources using the Spring Ecosystem Inventory and Assessment Protocols and adapting them as needed for the unique arid Sky Island ecosystems. The assessment will collect information on channel morphology, riparian and wetland vegetation, water quality, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and wildlife. The purpose of this project is to determine if a newly formed rapid on the Colorado River is acting as a barrier to invasive non-native fish moving upstream from Lake Mead into the Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP). These non-native fish would threaten native desert fishes upstream to include the endangered Razorback Sucker and the Humpback Chub. The project will fill knowledge gaps on fish movement, species composition, and population dynamics in this minimally studied section of the Colorado River, and inform managers on whether active management actions (e.g. native fish translocations; non-native removals) may be required to conserve native fishes in the western Grand Canyon.

The goals of this study are to: (1) generate a genetic toolset (80-90 microsatellite loci per species) for long term genetic monitoring of both wild and captive populations of each threatened gartersnake species (THEQ & THRU) that inhabit Arizona and New Mexico; (2) conduct field surveys at Saliz Creek to assess the genetic, demographic, and life history effects of a 2012 wild translocation event for THRU to better assess the strategies of genetic management and success of translocations; (3) conduct targeted surveys for both species at key sites to collect additional samples from geographic gaps and increase sample sizes at previously sampled sites to further evaluate connectivity and genetic diversity of these...
Capture mule deer, elk, and pronghorn in priority herds to attach GPS radio collars, and analyze those data to understand migration patterns, stopover areas, and seasonal habitats, 2) deploy trail cameras on existing herds to quantify use of wildlife crossing structures, 3) purchase remote sensing imagery and analysis of mule deer and pronghorn GPS collars to identify conflict areas with feral equids, and 4) conduct habitat evaluation of stopover sites where prior habitat improvement treatments have been conducted.

Riparian vegetation provides crucial habitat for wildlife and is a high conservation priority for land managers throughout the Southwest but a central scientific challenge is to generate quantitative predictions of how changes in water availability will affect the amount and quality of riparian wildlife habitat.
