Defenders staff, contractors and Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative partners will build a portal on the Conservation Registry to visualize landscape scale plans and conservation projects that address the priorities of the program. The portal will integrate with GN LCCs existing project management tool, LC Map, to spatially display plans within the geographic area of the LCC, provide information about the plans, and link to planning documents. services and/or data imports will be programmed to facilitate efficient transfer of project data from LC Map and other agencies and organizations into the Registry. FY2012Objectives: Coordination with Heart of the Rockies (HotR) staff to identify focal area,...

This project will apply the results of an on-going climate change vulnerability assessment to the management of two complex landscapes. The vulnerability assessment project team will work with mangers, land-owners, and conservation practitioners to explore 1) how downscaled climate datasets, modeled vegetation changes, and information on estimated species sensitivities can be used to develop climate change adaptation strategies, and 2) how model results and datasets can be made more useful for informing the management of species and landscapes. To accomplish these two goals, we will prepare datasets and model outputs for two landscapespotentially, the Pioneer Mountains-Craters of the Moon region in Idaho and the...

This region-wide coordinated bird monitoring program, supported by state, federal, tribal, nongovernmental organizations, and two statewide bird conservation partnerships, is designed to provide spatially-referenced baseline data for science-based biological planning and conservation design for the Great Northern LCC and its partners that is directly comparable with other landscapes and BCRs. We are requesting a third year of funding to continue sampling in BCR10 Montana and Idaho to enhance our ability to make robust inference to bird populations on grassland, shrublands, and riparian systems. These data currently are being used by project partners to develop spatially-explicit models that will allow assessment...

Despite extensive knowledge and data surrounding the status and threats to Yellowstone cutthroat trout there is currently no comprehensive framework for prioritizing conservation of populations and metapopulations (i.e., locations) and potential actions that could be taken in these locations to secure and expand populations, particularly in anticipation of climate change. Through our existing collaboration with state and federal management partners from Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Montana, we propose to integrate existing information on Yellowstone cutthroat trout status and limiting factors in a spatially-explicit conservation priority framework adapted from a financial portfolio concept aimed at maximizing...
These protocols are intended to identify key questions to be addressed, preferred approaches to addressing these questions, and issues likely to be encountered by scientists studying impacts of wind energy development on sage-grouse. I discuss advantages and disadvantages of possible study designs. A full BACI (Before After Control Impact) design with five years of preconstruction data and at least five years of post-construction data that estimates fundamental demographic parameters and habitat selection over a distance gradient from wind facilities provides the strongest design. Research proposals considered for funding by the GS3C-Sage-Grouse Collaborative will be evaluated based on their abilities to adhere...
This project is intended to advance wolverine conservation across the Rocky Mountains and North Cascades in the contiguous United States. It will include maintaining landscape connectivity among occupied wolverine habitats, assessing the feasibility to assist wolverine distribution expansion with translocation, developing and implementing a collaborative multi-state monitoring plan to assess distribution and genetic characteristics of the metapopulation, and engaging key partners at multiple levels to prioritize habitat conservation, population connectivity, and management activities. We have 4 overarching project objectives, all of which apply across the range of wolverines in the contiguous U.S.:1. Maintain landscape...

The Heart of the Rockies Initiative (HOTR), on behalf of its 24 land conservation non-governmental partners, and its federal and state agency partners, seeks a second year of science support to incorporate emerging data on landscape integrity and connectivity, crucial habitats, and climate change response into downscaled data layers that can help the partners identify and validate their immediate and longer term conservation targets.FY2013Objectives:The primary goal of the HOTR science support project is to deliver the latest science in climate adaptation and habitat connectivity conservation to conservation practitioners and their partners in the Central Rocky Mountain region. HOTR conservation partners want assurance...

Existing stream temperature data were compiled from numerous federal, state, tribal, and private sources to develop an integrated regional database. Spatial statistical models for river networks were applied to these data to develop an accurate model that predicts stream temperature for all fish-bearing streams in the US portion of the GNLCC. Differences between model outputs for historic and future climate scenarios were used to assess spatial variation in the vulnerability of sensitive fish species across the GNLCC.FY2011Objectives: Develop a regional stream temperature model that incorporates important climate drivers, wildfire/riparian conditions, and geomorphic factors; Use the model to understand and predict...

This project expands upon a large, multi-agency collaborative study (Univ. of Idaho, Idaho Game and Fish, BLM, Great Basin LCC & two grazing Associations) evaluating the impacts of alternative grazing systems on sage-grouse over a 10-year period using a staggered entry BACI design. This project will evaluate the effects of grazing management prescriptions (intended to be compatible with greater sage-grouse) on other sagebrush-obligate or associated avian species. The results will contribute to an adaptive management process by: 1) assessing current state of populations of sagebrush-dependent birds as well as limiting factors, 2) compilation of models describing population-habitat relationships that can lead to species-habitat...

FY2016Develop and utilize both correlative and experimental approaches to evaluate effects of different intensities of spring cattle grazing on sage-grouse habitat selection, insect abundance, and sage-grouse demographic and behavioral traits. Collect data and document the effects of different levels of spring cattle grazing intensity on:1) sage-grouse demographic traits; 2) abundance and biomass of arthropods; 3) sage-grouse nest concealment and other vegetation/habitat features.Analyze the relationship between cattle grazing and sage-grouse demography at multiple spatial scales and evaluate the effects of experimental changes in cattle grazing on sage-grouse reproductive parameters.

This project is part of an ongoing effort to develop and implement a landscape level decision support system (DSS) across the boundaries of Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Montana. The project will strengthen public understanding in the use of objective and scientific fish and wildlife data and predictive modeling for purposes of developing geospatially-based landscape science to inform conservation and development actions. The project will inform, educate, and garner public and user support of the DSS upon its public release, aid in the development and use of the DSS web interface based on customer input and preferences, and provide communications strategies, tools, messages, forums, and feedback for improving public...

This project will develop a range-wide distribution map for pygmy rabbits through compilation and synthesis of existing presence-absence data and development of a predictive MaxEnt model. The proposed work would evaluate how well sage-grouse habitat conservation also supports landscapes inhabited by pygmy rabbits at both regional and range-wide scales, and this information can be used to inform integrated habitat conservation, restoration, and management that targets both of these sagebrush obligates. It is part of a larger intensive sage-grouse and pygmy rabbit distribution and habitat use study in Idaho supported by BLM, Forest Service and Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
