This child item data set provides phytoplankton data collected from Owasco Lake, New York, on October 8, 2019. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, and abundance (density reported as both natural units and cells) and biovolume are reported. All data are reported as raw calculated values. This dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at twelve sampling locations on Owasco Lake.

Water depths were measured during November 2015 and bathymetric elevations were computed for the lower Sixmile Creek reservoir in Ithaca, Tompkins County, N.Y. These data were used to create a bathymetric surface (TIN) of the reservoir. Data collected in 1938 were used to create a second TIN and a contour line shapefile. This dataset includes the ADCP-measured transect data and manually-measured point data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, Ithaca, N.Y., during November 16-20, 2015, and the two bathymetric-surface TINS (for 1938 and 2015) and a 1938 contour line shapefile that were created by the GIS program, City of Ithaca, N.Y.

Introduction In 2012, Hurricane Sandy created an open breach in the barrier island system along the south shore of Long Island, N.Y. This breach formed at a location known as Old Inlet and migrated rapidly westward over the winter storm season following Hurricane Sandy. In response, the National Park Service sought assistance from the USGS New York Water Science Center to help evaluate the hydrodynamics and geomorphology of the breach. The evaluation is centered on measurement of water velocities and depths within the breach, and collection of water levels with the Great South Bay adjacent to the breach. This project is part of a larger ongoing study prepared in coordination with the National Park Service...

Ecosystem metabolism is a measure of energy flow in terrestrial and aquatic environments that quantifies a balance between the rate of biomass production by photosynthesizing plants and the rate of biomass oxidation by respiring plants and animals to maintain and build living biomass. It is therefore a fundamental measure of ecosystem function that quantifies the balance between the rate of production, maintenance, and decay of organic matter. It also provides an understanding of energy flow to higher trophic levels that supports food webs with secondary and tertiary productivity. Furthermore, metabolism helps explain when aquatic ecosystems undergo out-of-balance behaviors such as hypoxia. Recent advances in sensor...

This dataset contains field measurements of vegetation from the (1) Adirondack Sugar Maple Project (ASM), and (2) Buck Creek North and Buck Creek South Watersheds. The ASM data, collected in 2009 in 20 Adirondack watersheds (2 or 3 0.10 ha plots per watershed), are comprised of general plot characteristics, tree species identification and diameter at breast height (DBH) for all trees greater than 10 cm DBH, canopy position and health ratings, common and scientific names, and species identification and counts for saplings and seedlings. In Buck Creek North Tributary Watershed and Buck Creek South Tributary Watershed, near Inlet, New York, all trees greater than 5 cm DBH were identified in 15 circular plots (245 square...

Summary: This study aims to do a thorough analysis of trends in peak streamflows on Long Island. Reliable information about the magnitude and frequency of floods is essential for flood insurance studies, flood-plain management, and the design of transportation and water-conveyance infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, culverts, dams, and levees. Federal, State, regional, and local officials need peak flow information to effectively plan and manage land use and water resources, protect lives and property in flood-prone areas, and determine flood-insurance rates, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Long Island is a regional economic driver which has experienced public health and safety issues due to extreme...

Introduction Detailed mapping of stratified glacial deposits in eastern Broome and southeastern Chenango Counties, New York is a study in the cooperative Detailed Aquifer Mapping Program between the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). The aim of the program is to map glacial aquifers in New York State at a scale of 1:24,000. This information is used by NYSDEC Division of Water and others for delineation of groundwater contributing areas, assessing potential threats to aquifers from both point and non-point sources, responding to contamination from spills or leaks from underground storage facilities, and providing information to assess the need...

Background - Detailed mapping of the glacial aquifer within the Chemung River and adjacent tributary valleys in Eastern Chemung County is the latest study in the cooperative Detailed Aquifer Mapping Program between the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). The aim of the program is to map glacial aquifers in New York State at a scale of 1:24,000. This information is used by NYSDEC Division of Water and others for delineation of groundwater contributing areas, assessing potential threats to aquifers from both point and non-point sources, responding to contamination from spills or leaks from underground storage facilities, and providing information...
From May 2017 to November 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted bathymetric surveys of New York City's East of Hudson Reservoirs. Bathymetry data were collected at Lake Gilead during May 2017. Depth data were collected primarily with a multibeam echosounder. Quality assurance points were measured with a single-beam echosounder. Water surface elevations were established using real-time kinematic (RTK) and static global navigation satellite system (GNSS) surveys and submersible pressure transducers. Measured sound velocity profiles were used to correct echosounder depth measurements for thermal stratification. Digital elevation models were created by combining the measured bathymetry data with lidar elevation...
From May 2017 to November 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted bathymetric surveys of New York City's East of Hudson Reservoirs. Bathymetry data were collected at New Croton Reservoir during June 2017, July 2017, and October 2017. Depth data were collected primarily with a multibeam echosounder. Quality assurance points were measured with a single-beam echosounder. Water surface elevations were established using real-time kinematic (RTK) and static global navigation satellite system (GNSS) surveys and submersible pressure transducers. From 2016 through 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, collected horizontal-to-vertical seismic soundings at 71 locations in the major valleys in the Oneonta area, Otsego and Delaware Counties, New York to help determine thickness of the unconsolidated deposits and the bedrock surface elevation. The HVSR technique, commonly referred to as the passive-seismic method, is used to estimate the thickness of unconsolidated sediments and the depth to bedrock (Lane and others, 2008; Fairchild and others, 2013). The passive-seismic method uses a single, broad-band three-component (two horizontal and one vertical) seismometer to record ambient seismic...

From July through December 2016, 56 environmental samples were collected from the Mohawk and Western New York River Basins. Samples were collected from nine production wells and 13 domestic wells in the Mohawk River Basin, and 17 production wells and 17 domestic wells in the Western New York River Basins. Samples were collected and processed using standard USGS methods and analyzed for 320 constituents including physicochemical properties, dissolved gases, major ions, nutrients, trace elements, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, radionuclides, and indicator bacteria. Analytical methods are described and referenced in Gaige and others (2023). Five of the Mohawk River Basin wells (HE 622, HE 624, OE1468, SA1501,...

Transects of near-surface continuous water-quality data and vertical profiles of the same parameters were collected over a 24-hour period from September 7 to September 8, 2023 in the Arthur Kill. The Arthur Kill is a tidal strait located between Staten Island, New York, and Union and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey, and connects Newark Bay to the north and Raritan Bay to the south. It is a major shipping channel for the Port of New York and New Jersey surrounded by industrial and highly developed land. Transects were collected using a Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) EXO2 series water-quality sonde with a 5-second data collection interval while the boat was in motion. Vertical profiles of water-quality parameters...
