The Northern Glaciated Plains in the upper Midwest United States is a region where fishing generates millions of dollars a year for local and state economies. Maintaining these revenues requires the management of fish populations that are popular and accessible (e.g. boat ramps, public land access) to anglers. Fisheries throughout the world are currently undergoing unprecedented changes to water levels and habitat quality resulting from climate change. The consequences of climate change to Northern Glaciated Plains fisheries are unknown but pose an immediate challenge for resource managers as angler access and opportunities can be jeopardized when: a) boat ramps become inaccessible due to changing water levels,...

The over-all objective of the program was to determine, by laboratory experiments, the kinetics and the mechanics of the various reactions which produce acid in coal mine drainage. Secondary objectives included identification of the role of bacterial catalysts, evaluation of methods to inhibit pyrite weathering, and laboratory application of a new method of weathering inhibition.

In its role of providing technical assistance to the mining industry, the Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has conducted research to develop trapped miner location systems which would aid in locating miners trapped by underground mining disasters. Efforts to produce electromagnetic systems for the location of trapped miners underground and to communicate with them were surveyed, from the 1920's to 1981. Theoretical studies of through- the -earth electromagnetic transmissions are described as well as studies of the electrical characteristics of various rocks, minerals, and soil. Several trapped miner location systems are reviewed including the Westinghouse systems, the DEVELCO system, and an automated...

The Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center (NPWRC) conducts integrated research to fulfill the Department of the Interior’s responsibilities to the Nation’s natural resources. Located on 600 acres along the James River Valley near Jamestown, North Dakota, the NPWRC develops and disseminates scientific information needed to understand, conserve, and wisely manage the Nation’s biological resources. Research emphasis is primarily on midcontinental plant and animal species and ecosystems of the United States.
The Juneau Gold Belt portion of the Juneau Mining District has historically had the greatest mining and exploration activity within the district and is the subject of this report. Between 1880 and 1983, the mines within the Juneau Gold Belt produced 6.7 million oz gold, 3.1 million oz silver, and 45 million lbs lead, all of which had a total value of about $157,000,000. Information in this report is based on an extensive literature search which included unpublished private company reports, U.S. Geological Survey, State of Alaska, and Bureau reports, personal interviews, and Bureau field work. The field work during 1985 revealed the locations of numerous adits, shafts and other old mine workings, many of which were...

This digital dataset consists of monthly climate data from the Basin Characterization Model v8 (BCMv8) for the updated Central Valley Hydrologic Model (CVHM2) for water years 1922 to 2019. The BCMv8 data are available in a separate data release titled "The Basin Characterization Model - A regional water balance software package (BCMv8) data release and model archive for hydrologic California, water years 1896-2020". The data were modified by: (1) extracting the data from the data source for the relevant model domain and times, and (2) rescaling the 270-meter BCMv8 grid to the small watersheds that contribute boundary flow to the CVHM2 model for the hydrologic variables recharge and runoff. The three data pieces...

As a low-lying coastal nation, the Republic of the Marshall Islands is at the forefront of exposure to climate change impacts. The Republic of the Marshall Islands has a strong dependence on natural resources and biodiversity not only for food and income but also for culture and livelihood. However, these resources are threatened by rising sea levels and associated coastal hazards (storm surges, saltwater intrusion, erosion, etc.). High-quality data for atoll ‘ridge to reef’ (land and ocean) areas are needed to provide remote communities with the tools and strategies to make adaptation efforts before disasters occur. Although the Republic of the Marshall Islands’ National Strategic Plans recognize the need to...

Map Package format. Structure point data set containing locations and structure type, with strike and dip (planar features) and trend and plunge (linear features). The symbology is derived from ESRI Representations associated with the SymbolFGDCLookup table in the geodatabase. Most trends and dips are based on field measurements using Brunton or similar compass. A sun compass was employed in areas of strong magnetic signature, such as iron-formation. Contains bedrock structural measurements acquired by the multiple field geologists over 40+ years. Collected from bedrock exposures and from data transcribed from published and unpublished analog (non-digital) maps. To access the full data set, download using the link...

Drought and wildfire pose enormous threats to the integrity of natural resources that land managers are charged with protecting. Recent observations and modeling forecasts indicate that these stressors will likely produce catastrophic ecosystem transformations, or abrupt changes in the condition of plants, wildlife, and their habitats, in regions across the country in coming decades. In this project, researchers will bring together land managers who have experienced various degrees of ecosystem transformation (from not yet experiencing any changes to seeing large changes across the lands they manage) to share their perspectives on how to mitigate large-scale changes in land condition. The team will conduct surveys...
