This ESRI geodatabase consists of 5 feature datsets with 23 individual polygon feature classes and two raster datasets. A master campsite polygon feature class represents the boundaries of campsites identified in the 1973, 1984, and 1991 campsite inventories of the Colorado River corridor in Grand Canyon, Arizona. The other polygon feature classes represent camp locations along the Colorado River corridor in Grand Canyon, Arizona during different survey periods using different surveying techniques. The raster datasets represent sub-aerial and sub-surface sandbar surfaces at 37 long term-monitoring sites between Lees Ferry and Diamond Creek, Arizona in Grand Canyon National Park, measured in September and October...

In May 2021, the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC) of the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS), Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC) acquired airborne multispectral high resolution data for the Colorado River in Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. The imagery data consist of four bands (Band 1 – red, Band 2 – green, Band 3 – blue, and Band 4 – near infrared) with a ground resolution of 20 centimeters (cm). These image data are available to the public as 16-bit GeoTIFF files, which can be read and used by most geographic information system (GIS) and image-processing software. The spatial reference of the image data are in the State Plane (SP) map projection using the central Arizona zone (FIPS 0202)...

This data release comprises nearly three decades of measurements of sandbar topography for monitoring sites along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The data were collected to monitor the effects of the operations of Glen Canyon Dam on sandbars, which are also recreational campsites. The data were collected by the US Geological Survey Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center in cooperation with Northern Arizona University. Funding for data collection, processing, and reporting has been provided by the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program administered by the US Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation.

This dataset represents 505 campsites along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon with associated debris flow probabilities calculated for approximately a 100-year period (Griffiths and others, 2004) and geomorphic attributes mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey, Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (USGS-GCMRC) (Hadley and others, 2018). The campsite polygons were developed as part of a master campsite database that was a collaborative effort to maintain between the National Park Service in Grand Canyon National Park and the USGS-GCMRC. Debris flow probabilities have been added as an attribute from ungauged tributary watersheds published in 2004 (Griffiths and others, 2004). Area and percentages of campsites...

This dataset represents 740 tributary canyons and/or watersheds adjacent to the Colorado River in Grand Canyon with associated debris flow probabilities from 2004. Also, these data include tributarys canyon and/or watersheds to Glen Canyon and several smaller watersheds in Grand Canyon where debris flow data is currently unavailable. Historic probabilities of debris flow occurrence were estimated by modeling the known frequency distribution with drainage basin parameters observed to control the process by which debris flows initiate and travel to the river. Observations from 1984 through 2003 provide a 20-year record of all debris flows that reached the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, and repeat photography provides...

Development of a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) of the pre-Glen Canyon Dam topography in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah and Arizona was initiated to assist the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in its Lake Powell coring program in the fall of 2018 (https://www.usgs.gov/centers/ut-water/science/lake-powell-coring). Topographic surveys of Glen Canyon were commissioned by the Bureau of Reclamation during the planning stages for Lake Powell as part of the Colorado River Storage Project (S. 500, 1956). The Colorado River arm was surveyed by Alster and Associates, Inc. in 1958 and 1959 at a contour interval of 10-feet from the river surface at the future dam site through where the 3,750-foot contour...

Bathymetric, topographic, and grain-size data were collected from May 2013 to October 2016 along a 15-mi reach of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Arizona by the U.S. Geological Survey Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center. The study reach is located from river miles -15 at the base of Glen Canyon Dam to 0 at Lees Ferry. Channel bathymetry was mapped using multibeam bathymetry collected in November 2014 and single beam bathymetry collected in February 2015, August 2015, February 2016, and June 2016. Subaerial topography was mapped using photogrammetry derived from aerial Imagery collected in May 2013 and ground-based total-stations collected in February 2015, October 2015, and October...

This data release contains model inputs used to estimate surface water greenhouse gas fluxes from two large arid reservoirs, Lake Powell and Lake Mead. The release also contains empirical, spatially explicit water quality and greenhouse gas data from a single field survey conducted in Lake Powell in July of 2017. Finally, this release contains surface area estimates of shallow (< 15m) tributary regions of Lake Powell under different water level scenarios.

These data were compiled to model the effects of flow regime and bed grain size distributions on rates of gross primary production (GPP) in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam, AZ, USA. The objectives of our study were to quantify daily and weekly scale effects of an experimental flow regime on GPP in the Colorado River. The experimental flow was conducted at Glen Canyon Dam from May-August in 2018, 2019, and 2020 and contrasted steady-low flows on weekend days with business-as-usual hydropeaking flows during weekdays. This data release only contains data through 2019. These data represent daily-scale estimates of GPP, discharge, turbidity, water depth, and canyon shading for eleven reaches on the Colorado...

Drought is a major problem in the American Southwest that is expected to worsen under the effects of climate change. Currently, the Southwest Biological Science Center is monitoring the effects of drought with soil moisture probes in a range of ecosystems across an elevational gradient on the Colorado Plateau. These data are used in multiple studies to analyze the effects of drought on vegetation composition and demography. Accessing and analyzing that data still relies on traditional site visits, which can result in delayed recognition of erroneous data, a common pitfall in many field-science operations. We propose to improve upon this traditional data workflow by leveraging the use of Internet of Things (IoT)...
