We conducted a radio telemetry study of adult western spadefoots (Spea hammondii) at 2 sites in southern California to characterize their survival, behavior, and movements from breeding through aestivation to inform conservation and management for the species. These data support the following publication: Halstead, B.J., Baumberger, K.L., Backlin, A.R., Kleeman, P.M., Wong, M.N., Gallegos, E.A., Rose, J.P., and Fisher, R.N., 2021. Conservation implications of spatiotemporal variation in the terrestrial ecology of an ephemeral pool-breeding amphibian. The Journal of Wildlife Management.

These data represent trapping effort and captures of deer mice at Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County, California. Deer mice were captured and marked with ear tags to allow identification of individuals. The location of captures can be used in a spatially explicit capture recapture model to estimate density of mice and how mouse density varies by site and habitat type.

The dataset consists of two csv files one for adult snakes and one for captive-reared juvenile snakes. The data contains start times (when snakes entered the study) and end times (when snakes died or were censored from the study) for survival analysis. The data also contains general information about the individual snakes (id, snout-vent length, treatment group, whether or not they were translocated), sex (juveniles only since adults were all female), surface activity (and data needed to calculate surface activity), and average distance moved between telemetry resighting. The above information was used as covariates in the survival models. These data support the following publication: Nguyen, A.M., Todd, B.D....

This U.S. Geological Survey data release includes tabular data collected to characterize the habitat and movement of Dixie Valley toads. Data were collected in Dixie Valley, Nevada, in autumn 2018 and spring 2019. These data support the following publication: Halstead, B.J., Kleeman, P.M., Rose, J.P. and Fouts, K.J., 2021. A study comparing reintroduction scenarios for the San Francisco gartersnake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia), an endangered subspecies native to San Mateo County and Santa Cruz County in northern California. Models for snake survival, growth, fecundity, and reproductive status were used to construct a demographic population model. Data are posterior distributions for demographic parameters from Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling in hierarchical Bayesian models. These data support the following publication: Rose, J.P., Kim, R., Schoening, E.J., Lien, P.C., and Halstead, B.J., 2023. Comparing reintroduction strategies for the endangered San Francisco gartersnake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) using demographic...

Adult female San Francisco gartersnakes (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) were captured and examined using an ultrasound device to determine if they were gravid and count the number of embryos in those that were. Morphological data including length and mass were collected for each snake, along with the date of capture and a study site identifier. These data support the following publication: Rose, J.P., Kim, R., Schoening, E.J., Lien, P.C., and Halstead, B.J., 2023. This dataset includes results from external skin swabbing of Rana boylii and Dicamptodon tenebrosus to test for the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis from Fox Creek in Mendocino County, California, in 2016-2020. Morphological measurements of swabbed animals were recorded, and Rana boylii had a unique identifier (pit tag) inserted beneath their skin for identification in future capture events. These data supports the following publication: Belasen, A.M., Peek, R.A., Adams, A.J., Russell, I.D., De León, M.E., Adams, M.J., Bettaso, J., Breedveld, K.G.H., Catenazzi, A., Dillingham, C.P. and Grear, D.A., 2024. Comma-separated values (.csv) file containing data related to amphibian sampling across the United States between 2016 and 2021. Data files contain mercury concentrations in amphibian and dragonfly tissues, mercury concentrations in sediment, as well as amphibian morphometrics, and habitat and climate characteristics where the samples were collected.
These data represent capture mark recapture data along with associated disease status for boreal toads (Anaxyrus boreas) from Wyoming and Montana from 2004-2016 and four frog species (Rana draytonii, R. muscosa, R. pretiosa, R. sierrae) from 2001-2016.
These data are the results of surveys for the Shasta salamander complex (Hydromantes shastae, H. samweli, and H. wintu) conducted at 87 survey plots on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest from April 2019 to March 2020. Time- and area-constrained occupancy surveys were conducted at plots selected within high-priority areas identified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. There are additional surveys planned for future field seasons. As the Shasta Salamander is under review for listing under the Endangered Species Act, sensitive location information is restricted, and can be made available upon request by contacting the dataset point of contact.

Species distributions are governed by processes occurring at multiple spatial scales. For species with complex life cycles, the needs of all life stages must be met within the dispersal limitations of the species. Multi-scale processes can be particularly important for these species, where small-scale patterns in specific habitat components can affect the distribution of one life stage, whereas large-scale patterns in land cover might better explain the distribution of other life stages. Using a conditional multi-scale model, we evaluated which aspects of the landscape and local environment are most strongly related to occupancy patterns of western spadefoots (Spea hammondii). These data describe the survey, pool,...

These data indicate whether a premetamorphic or any life stage of each amphibian species (sierran treefrog Pseudacris sierra, California red-legged frog Rana draytonii, and rough-skinned newt Taricha granulosa) was detected in a survey. These data, combined with the survey data, are necessary for modeling occupancy while accounting for imperfect detection. Surveys for which no detections occurred do not appear in this file, but are in the survey data file (Survey_Data_for_Occupancy_of_Amphibians_in_Northern_California_Coastal_Dune_Drainages_2014_2016).

These data describe differences in percent cover of microhabitats and vegetation types at giant gartersnake locations and random points paired with giant gartersnake locations for use in case-control logistic regression. The data also include information on the individual snake, the year of observation, and whether the individual had moved from its previous location to allow for correlation of the data within individuals and locations

These data describe the maximum water depth in each studied coastal dune drainage in each study year. Water depth is used as a proxy for hydroperiod, and is a good indicator of the relative persistence of surface water among sites that can be collected in a single visit.

These data represent incidental observations of western pond turtles (Emys [Actinemys] marmorata) collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center, at Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area between 1993 and 2014. These data do not have associated survey effort, and are intended to represent incidental observations, rather than a random, systematic, or exhaustive survey for western pond turtles. The data include turtle location, observation date, and observer information.
