The Climate Commons is the California LCC’s starting point for discovery of climate change data and related resources, information about the science that produced it, and guidance for applying climate change science to conservation in California. One of the services the Commons offers is a collection of articles introducing and explaining key concepts relating to climate change and conservation in California, helping resource managers get up to speed with this science and find important resources that they need to incorporate climate science into their conservation planning. The Basin Characterization Model (BCM) dataset provides historical and projected climate and hydrology data at a 270 meter resolution, which is relevant for watershed-scale evaluation and planning. Guidance for incorporating climate change into conservation and restoration strategies was provided in two Climate-Smart Actions for Natural Resource Managers workshops hosted by the Bay Area Ecosystem Climate Change Consortium (BAECCC, baeccc.org) and sponsored by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the California Landscape Conservation Cooperative, California Coastal Conservancy, and The Nature Conservancy on November 29, 2012 and September 24, 2013. Materials from both of these workshops are presented in this webpage, presented on the CA LCC’s Climate Commons.
This section of the Climate Commons is dedicated to web pages and data management plans for the CA LCC-funded projects. The purpose is to deliver the scientific products resulting from the CA LCC-funded applied research projects for use by the intended audience, California’s natural resource managers. The myriad challenges facing biodiversity under climate change are reflected in the challenges facing managers planning for these impacts. An ever-expanding number of recommendations and tools for climate change adaptation exist to aid managers in these efforts, yet navigating these various resources can lead to information overload and paralysis in decision-making. Here we provide a synthesis of the key considerations, approaches, and available tools for integrating climate change adaptation into management plans. In its first funded year this project created an online environment in which land managers and their technical support staff can quickly find the climate adaptation information they need and communicate with the researchers producing the data. Phase 2 of the project focused on reaching out to the user community to get them engaged in the Climate Commons, and continuing development of the site. In year 3 and beyond, the Climate Commons became the CA LCC’s project data management platform as well as a digital library offering a starting place to find climate change science relevant to conservation decision-making. http://climate.calcommons.org.

The Watershed Analyst lets you access climate and hydrology data to help your community get climate ready. The Watershed Analyst accesses the best science available to provide our region’s first high resolution resource for looking at the effects of climate on water resources and open spaces. This project taps into the knowledgebase of TBC3, the Terrestrial Biodiversity Climate Change Consortium, a Bay Area interdisciplinary research collaborative funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Selected climate and biogeographic model datasets are hosted by the Climate Commons and made available for viewing and download in a custom interactive map utility designed for the purpose of making very large and multi-layer datasets easily comprehensible and accessible to everyone who needs them. Logged-in users see a link to the visualization and download pages in the catalog record for the hosted dataset, and can select from the combinations of global climate model, emissions scenario, and data parameters, as well as set a geographic area of interest. This guidance document and webinar provide information about the CA LCC method for creating and updating a Data Management Plan for CA LCC-funded projects. A Data Management Plan is a document that describes the data produced by a project and the way those resources will be stored, documented, and if and how they will be shared for use by others. Data Management Plans are required of all CA LCC-funded projects. CA LCC’s Data Managers assist Principle Investigators in starting and updating their Data Management Plans throughout the lifespan of their project, culminating in the delivery of the products and making them accessible on the Climate Commons when appropriate.

The CA LCC assisted the San Francisco Bay Area National Wildlife Refuge Complex in its conservation planning efforts by researching and summarizing projections of climate change and potential impacts for the natural resources of the seven refuges within the Refuge Complex. The following documents are available, presented on a webpage on the Climate Commons (http://climate.calcommons.org/sfbnwr). A bibliographic database was also delivered to the refuge managers for their use in their planning documents. As the predicted impacts of climate change are becoming more apparent, natural resource managers are faced with the task of developing climate adaptation plans. These managers need state-of-the-art, scientifically based information upon which to base these management plans and decisions consistently across California and the Great Basin. This project applies historical, current, and projected climate data to a regional water model to examine water availability, biodiversity, and conservation. This graphing tool presents climate and hydrology data values from the California Basin Characterization Model dataset plotted over time for 156 hydrologic basins (HUC-8 basins) that comprise hydrologic California. The CA LCC assisted the San Francisco Bay Area National Wildlife Refuge Complex in its conservation planning efforts by researching and summarizing projections of climate change and potential impacts for the natural resources of the seven refuges within the Refuge Complex. We used the Climate Commons and the tools linked to it to search the literature and create graphs and maps depicting range and types of climate and physical changes expected for the region, and searched the scientific literature and consulted with experts for the summaries of potential impacts to the target habitats and species.
The Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) Integrated Data Management Network (IDMN) worked with over 20 organizations over two years to bring coherence to the LCC information management landscape. Specifically, the IDMN Network tried to address ways LCC partners implemented the basic building blocks of data management. Issues addressed included building and sharing science products with partners, securely storing those data for the long term, and evaluating ways to get those outputs to cooperators and eventually the public.
