Using a bioclimatic envelope approach, University of Alberta investigators project how the distribution and abundance of boreal forest birds across North America will respond to different scenarios of future climate-change. Investigation emphasis is on mapping and quantifying potential range expansions of boreal bird species into Arctic and subarctic regions across Alaska and Canada. The final products demonstrate a broad continental-scale overview of potential shifts in avian distribution.
Climate models project the rapid warming of boreal and arctic regions of NorthAmerica. This has led to predictions that boreal forest vegetation and fauna will track these changes andshift northward into the arctic over the next century. We used a comprehensive dataset of avian pointcountsurveys from across boreal Canada and Alaska, combined with the best-available interpolatedclimate data, to develop bioclimatic niche models of current avian distribution and density for 102 nativespecies of forest songbirds. The Canadian Wind Energy Atlas is based on a set of quadrilateral meso-scale domains called "tiles". The juxtaposition of 65 partially overlapping tiles constitutes a representation of Canada's wind potential. On each tile, climate is characterized by a large set of weather conditions, providing over 200 different possible atmospheric states. The climatic modelling finds a spatial solution for the wind flow in each of those states. Results are then post-processed with a statistical model representing the dominant winds in order to obtain weighted average wind velocities. We completed nine focus groups on perceptions of powerline right-of-way (ROW) management issues. In these groups we interviewed eastern Tennessee residents to determine the nature and range of knowledge and views regarding vegetation management, ROWs as wildlife habitat, and ROW aesthetics. We also conducted an extensive literature review to adduce other pertinent data. Participants in focus groups exhibited a wide range of attitudes and beliefs about the interview topics. Some associated wildlife habitat with areas devoid of humans ("wilderness" or "sanctuary"), whereas others thought of habitat as close as "my backyard." A majority referred to habitat in relatively objective terms such as "food, water, and cover"...

This proposal is to deliver the pilot component of a wetland tracking project initiated by the CIJV in 2010. The wetland trend project will deliver an assessment of wetland trends and develop an approach for tracking wetland trends into the future; this will have relevance to conservation planning throughout transboundary ecological planning units, including Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) 9 and 10, and the Cold Deserts and Western Cordillera Ecoregions (Figure 2).
