This is the GeoPackage (“TMG_AdditionalArea_Trans.gpkg”) that contains the layer (“main.TMG_Area_Trans”) depicting the spatial extent of the four Additional Survey Area transects that are surveyed during the annual MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial surveys. This GeoPackage (NAD83; ESPG: 3338) was created by Michael Swain in August 2021 and subsequently emailed to Maggie Harings. It includes waterbody units, waterbody types, and waterbody perimeter as well as their areas.Transects do not exist for Cape Simpson as this area is adequately assessed by conducting aerial surveys for lakes only. This collection contains the original “raw” survey data that were recorded and transcribed by each observer during the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) Aerial Breeding Pair Survey. Left-front and right-front seat observers recorded data on geese, swans, and cranes since 1985, while data on eiders, ducks, and waterbirds was recorded by a right-rear seat observer since 1989. These raw transcribed data should be used to produce updated quality-control (QC) datasets by running the quality assurance/quality control script “AKaerial.R” whenever the quality control procedures are revised or modified. Observer-specific population indices for the USFWS Region Migratory Bird Management Arctic Coastal Plain study area. The survey consists of low-level aerial observations of waterfowl on a stratified strip transect design. The resulting data frame is several indices separated by observer and calculated using a standard ratio estimator. These data are output from the R package AKaerial and are also available within that package, see https://github.com/USFWS/AKaerial. The data used to produce these estimates contain known errors. Between September and November each year, nearly the entire world population of Pacific black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) stages at Izembek Lagoon and surrounding estuaries (hereafter: Izembek Complex). The Izembek Complex is a unique area of protected brackish waters, supporting one of the world’s largest eelgrass beds and a diverse array of wildlife. This is an incomplete collection of track files produced during the MBM-AK TLSA molting goose survey flights. They reference latitude, longitude, and time in total seconds in the day. These files are called by R code (‘TMGSurvey_Master_2019.Rmd’ located in ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’). Following review of this code, it appears as though these transcripts were not ultimately used in any way. Please consult ‘TMGSurvey_Master_2019.Rmd’ for additional context. Track file naming format is as follows: ‘TR[date][firstInitialLastNameOfObserver].csv’; HWilson refers to Heather Wilson while BShults refers to Brad Shults.

This is the collection of raw data was collected during MBM-AK TLSA annual molting goose surveys. Partial quality control has been completed for these data: following each survey, the observer listened to their survey recording that documented counts along transects and then transcribed these findings into these raw datasets (‘raw_data’). The observer listened to their recording a second time in order to confirm that their transcriptions were correct. These QC data were produced from the “raw” data using the R Package “AKaerial.” The raw data were evaluated against the current data standards in the ‘AKaerial data dictionary’ and saved to new QC data files with associated log files that document any changes that were made. From 1985 to 1997, observers recorded bird observations out to 200 meters from the aircraft using continuously running tape players (with a locational accuracy of +/- 5 km), while an automated voice recording survey program (with a spatial accuracy of +/- 0.5 km) was used to record data from 1998 to present. This collection contains the report log files produced by the R Package “AKaerial” when the QC data were created from the raw transcribed data. The QC log files document the quality control process, data standards, and what changes (if any) were made to the QC data compared to the raw data. Annual assessment of nesting populations of geese on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) provides information for biologists, participants in cooperative goose management plans, and Pacific Flyway technical committees. A ground-based sampling procedure has been used since 1986 to estimate the number of total nests, active nests, and eggs for cackling geese, emperor geese, greater white-fronted geese, and spectacled eiders. Annual information on the size of the nesting population and potential number of young produced contributes long term data needed to understand goose and eider population ecology and better manage these species. This data release contains observation data, design transects, design strata, analysis estimates output, and associated metadata from the Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey. The Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey provides data on distribution, abundance, and trend of 33 bird species that nest in northern Alaska. Starting in 1999, WBPHS_AK surveyors used the custom survey software RECORD (John I. Hodges, FWS-MBM-Alaska, retired) to record bird data and capture the survey flight track. Each observer had their own computer and obtained their own separate flight track each day. The track was recorded by capturing a GPS location every 5 seconds as long as the survey software was running. The software was started at some time between the aircraft’s engine start and the first transect, and was shut down at some time between the last transect and engine shut-down.
