This project applied sea-level rise (SLR) modeling approaches along the Pacific coast tidal gradient at a parcel scale through improved data collection tools and collaboration relevant to land managers. At selected salt marsh parcels in both the North Pacific and California LCCs, data collection techniques were employed to assess detailed baseline habitat elevations; tidal ranges, microclimate, and extreme weather events; sediment supply sources; vegetation community composition; and vertebrate population indices. Central Council Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (Central Council) assisted the Organized Village of Kasaan (OVK) in their NPLCC grant, Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Climate Change project. A survey was developed and used to interview traditional gathers on the time of year they did subsistence gathering.

This project will utilize traditional ecological knowledge to establish traditional gathering practices. Interviews will be conducted with traditional gatherers (a.k.a. subsistence) over the last two generations to get baseline data. The project will have a direct focus on the four (4) federally recognized Tribes on Prince of Wales Island (Craig, Hydaburg, Kasaan and Klawock).

contains an excel format and shapefile format of the vegetation survey data collected within Humboldt Bay during the summer of 2012.We recorded vegetation data within a 0.25 m2 quadrat concurrently with elevation surveys. Data were taken at every fourth (25%) elevation point (n=740 quadrats; Fig. 4). We measured height (mean and maximum, measured within 0.05 m) and visually estimated percent cover for each species within each quadrat. This allowed us to develop a relationship between plant species, elevation and tidal datum across all sites. Climate change has significant effects on critical ecosystem functions such as carbon and water cycling. Vegetation and especially forest ecosystems play an important role in the carbon and hydrological cycles. Vegetation models that include detailed belowground processes require accurate soil data to decrease uncertainty and increase realism in their simulations. The MC2 DGVM uses three modules to simulate biogeography, biogeochemistry and fire effects, all three of which use soil data either directly or indirectly. The over-arching theme of this work is that soil data affect the performance and realism of vegetation models with particular focus on their ability to predict or explain disturbances such as fire or disease. We tested the sensitivity of the Excel version of the 3-PG model to soil properties and applied this information to understanding bark beetle attacks in drought-stressed forests. This project will look at how climate change has altered hydrologic systems, Pacific salmon habitat, and survival of salmon in the Nooksack River watershed. It will develop an adaptation plan that can be adopted and integrated into management plans.Project Objectives for NPLCC funding:1. Building on currently available resources and on the prior climate adaptation experiences of our team,which includes tribal staff and a cultural anthropologist who is also an enrolled member of theConfederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, we will co-develop a guidebook for tribal adaptation. Thisguidebook will bring a tribal focus to adaptation planning and building resilience, in the context ofexisting tribal priorities, and will include traditional and local knowledge as well as western scientificresources and tools. Under the direction of an advisory group, the guidebook will be road-tested withseveral tribes, two of which have already been identified, and then revised at least once before beingreleased.

The State of Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the United Statescombined and extends from the high Arctic to the temperate rainforests and marine waters of Southeast Alaska. Climate change impacts are unique in the Southeast Alaska region and are longer term impacts such as heavy rains causing flooding, ocean acidification, warmer waters, snowfall variations, warm springs followed by frost affecting wild berry production, invasive species, and toxins in the marine environment. Multiple agencies and organizations in southwestern Oregon have made significant progress in collaborative restoration of forest landscapes and in projecting climate change effects and adaptation responses. We will build on these efforts by moving proposed activities forward using a climate-informed framework. Specifically, we will (1) implement “shovel-ready” restoration projects using climate-smart management practices, (2) prioritize additional proposed restoration projects informed by a recent climate change assessment, and (3) mainstream climate-smart thinking in federal planning efforts. These activities will ensure that restoration in southwestern Oregon is resilient to future climatic variability and change.

Descriptions of data produced by the project entitled “Incorporating Spatial Heterogeneity in Temperature into Climate Vulnerability Assessments for Coastal Pacific Streams” by Fullerton, Lawler, Lee, and Torgersen, 2017. Data are organized into three main folders: ‘Tabular’, which contains data tables, ‘Shapefiles’, which contains geospatial data, and ‘Images’, which contains maps and plots. Research on coastal change in Western Alaska has increased rapidly in recent years, making it challenging to track existing projects, understand their cumulative insights, gauge remaining research gaps, and prioritize future research. The Cascadia Parner Forum fosters a network of natural resource practitioners working with the NPLCC and GNLCC to guild the adaptive capacity of the landscape and species living within it. This project supported three complementary transboundary climate adaptation and habitat connectivity activities in the Cascadia region: 1) Transboundary Climate Analysis by the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group, 2) WildLinks workshop, and 3) Cascadia Partner Forum.

This project applied the results of an on-going climate change vulnerability assessment to the management of two complex landscapes. In-person workshops will be conducted to bring the results from the USGS Program on Coastal Ecosystems Response to Climate Change’s study on projected climate change effects on coastal environments (funded by NPLCC and NW CSC) to managers in their communities. The workshops will include presenting initial results, identifying their climate science needs, and introducing a decision-support tool.

A recent (2008-2012) outbreak of Geometrid moths has decimated subsistence berry harvest in South Central Alaska. This project will develop a risk model to predict where subsistence berry plants will be most resistant to Geometrid attack. The model will be used to identify areas where berry improvement silvicultural treatments are most likely to be successful.

A combination of focus groups and usability tests were used to explore the needs and preferences of a variety of NPLCC stakeholders as regards data management platform content, format, and features. This information was used to inform NPLCC decisions about how best to meet needs not currently met by LC MAP through adjustments or enhancements to LC MAP itself or by connecting stakeholders with other platforms or portals.
