The spatial data layer contains site locations, geographic information, data summaries, mean August stream temperatures, and modeled NorWeST stream temperatures. The Wet-Dry delineation file contains daily flow status estimates derived from stream temperature data for each site. The Site Visit file contains the date and time of the site visit along with associated information on site flow conditions, water depths, logger conditions, and stream logger...

This feature estimates the geographic extent of the sagebrush biome in the United States. It was created for the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency’s (WAFWA) Sagebrush Conservation Strategy publication as a visual for the schematic figures. This layer does not represent the realized distribution of sagebrush and should not be used to summarize statistics about the distribution or precise location of sagebrush across the landscape. This layer is intended to generalize the sagebrush biome distribution using Landsat derived classified vegetation rasters (Rigge at al. 2019), Bureau of Land Management-designated Habitat Management Areas, state-designated Priority Areas for Conservation for sage-grouse, the...

These data depict reptile species richness within the range of the Greater Sage-grouse. Species boundaries were defined as the total extent of a species geographic limits. This raster largely used species range data from "U.S. Geological Survey - Gap Analysis Project Species Range Maps CONUS_2001", however in order for a more complete picture of species richness, additional sources were used for species missing from the Gap Analysis program.

We developed a LiDAR-based habitat model for the threatened Marbled Murrelet (MAMU) in the Siuslaw National Forest, Oregon, using a two-step approach. First, we tested the applicability of the LiDAR-based model developed for the Coos Bay District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the Siuslaw N.F. In the second step, we tested alternative habitat models developed with forest structural data and Murrelet survey data from the Siuslaw N.F. We compared the performance of each model to provide forest managers with the best predictive tool to guide habitat management for the Marbled Murrelet. This shapefile contains the probability of Marbled Murrelet occupancy values of each model for vegetation polygons defined...

***This data set is superseded by Welty, J.L., and Jeffries, M.I., 2021, Combined wildland fire datasets for the United States and certain territories, 1800s-Present: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9ZXGFY3.*** This dataset is comprised of four different zip files. Zip File 1: A combined wildfire polygon dataset ranging in years from 1878-2019 (142 years) that was created by merging and dissolving fire information from 12 different original wildfire datasets to create one of the most comprehensive wildfire datasets available. Attributes describing fires that were reported in the various source data, including fire name, fire code, ignition date, controlled date, containment date, and...

Heat load, a unitless value from 0 (low incident radiation) to around 1 (high incident radiation), is calculated using aspect, slope, and latitude (McCune and Dylan 2002). For the purposes of the exploration tool, the data are binned into 6 classes using Geometric Interval. Classes range from very low to very high and are designed to allow the classification of a polygon into its heat load types. McCune, B. and Keon, D., 2002, Equations for potential annual direct incident radiation and heat load: Journal of Vegetation Science, v. 13, no. 4, p. 603-606, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1654-1103.2002.tb02087.x.

This dataset contains information regarding the acreages of land currently (as of 2004) enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) distributed by county and the year the CRP contract was initiated (1987-2004, excluding 1994 and 1995). Additionally, it contains total acreages of land enrolled in the CRP distributed by county and the contract year (1987-2003). USDA Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them safeguard environmentally sensitive land. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resource-conserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat. In return, FSA...

These data are 30m by 30 m grids of the mean Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) between 2001-2014 in the western United States. The SPEI index was developed by Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano and coauthors (https://spei.csic.es/index.html). Source evapotranspiration and precipitation data were generated by gridMET (http://www.climatologylab.org/gridmet.html).

Beschta and Ripple (2012) assert that increased elk populations in the Olympic National Park due to extirpation of wolves in the 1920’s has led to a reduction in riparian vegetation. They hypothesize that a decrease in this vegetation has led to an increase in erosion and undercutting of large conifer trees along the river banks, causing woody debris in the river, which in turn impacts channel morphology. Using imagery dating from 1939 and a set of digitized channel margins for each year, we classified vegetation changes that have occurred along the Hoh, Queets, and Quinault Rivers. We focused on identifying large conifers near the river that could impact water flow and channel morphology if undercut and classified...
This data release combines seven airborne thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing data sets of stream temperature collected along the mainstem of the Middle Fork John Day River (MFJD) in Oregon from 1994 to 2003. Years 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2002 have single datasets. Year 2003 has two data sets. Most of the TIR data covered the upstream half of the MFJD mainstem between river km 50 and 110, while the 2002 profile covers the lower half starting at the confluence of the MFJD with the North Fork John Day River through river kilometer 64. All TIR data sets were collected by helicopter in an upstream direction in August with the intent of capturing data at or near the maximum summer daily stream temperature. Ground-truthing...

"Vector Ruggedness Measure (VRM) measures terrain ruggedness as the variation in three-dimensional orientation of grid cells within a neighborhood. Vector analysis is used to calculate the dispersion of vectors normal (orthogonal) to grid cells within the specified neighborhood. This method effectively captures variability in slope and aspect into a single measure. Ruggedness values in the output raster can range from 0 (no terrain variation) to 1 (complete terrain variation). Typical values for natural terrains range between 0 and about 0.4. VRM was adapted from a method first proposed by Hobson (1972). VRM appears to decouple terrain ruggedness from slope better than current ruggedness indices, such as TRI or...
Powerlines in the western United States and Canada as identified by the 22 source data layers used to compile this shapefile. Source data were collected by personal contact or through the internet in the winter and spring of 2004 and assimilated using ArcGIS. This file is a complete record of overhead powerline data that was available as of 5/15/2004 but IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A COMPLETE REPRESENTATION OF THE SUM TOTAL OF ALL POWERLINES ON THE GROUND. These data primarily depict the higher voltage, long distance transmission lines but some arcs likely represent lower voltage distribution lines.

We used murrelet occupancy data collected by the Bureau of Land Management Coos Bay District and canopy metrics calculated from discrete return airborne LiDAR data to fit a logistic regression model predicting the probability of occupancy. Our final model for stand-level occupancy included distance to coast and 5 LiDAR-derived variables describing canopy structure. This dataset is a shapefile of forest stands in the Coos Bay district representing the model results.

This raster portrays the distribution of sagebrush within the geographic extent of the sagebrush biome in the United States. It was created for the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency’s (WAFWA) Sagebrush Conservation Strategy publication as a visual for the schematic figures and to calculate summary statistics. This distribution incorporates the most recently available sagebrush cover mapping (Xian et al. 2015, Rigge et al. 2019) and classified LANDFIRE EVT (Department of Ecosystem Science, University of Wyoming 2016). Both datasets were rigorously evaluated and extensive ground measurements taken to evaluate accuracy by the respective authors. We created a combined binary sagebrush distribution by classifying...
