This data release includes 40Ar/39Ar data from the U.S. Geological Survey for samples from Old Mine Park Area, Trumbull, Connecticut. Mineral samples were collected by Robert Wintsch and Harold Moritz. Potassium-bearing mineral grains were separated from the bulk sample and analyzed by argon geochronology at the U.S. Geological Survey Bascom ARgon Dating (BARD) Laboratory in Reston, Virginia. The data provide age constraints on units in the relevant geologic mapping area.

This spreadsheet contains the results of open-bore auger samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in Maryland and Virginia for the Federal Highways Administration Turner-Fairbanks Highway Research Center. 19 sites were selected in 14 different locations across northern Virginia and southern Maryland by FBGC scientists to drill boreholes for the development of the TFHRC’s In-situ Scour Testing Device (ISTD) and to investigate the sedimentological properties of different layers of the near-surface soil column. Each worksheet in this excel workbook contains the detailed log information for one site, including its name, gps coordinates, surface elevation, borehole depth, information about the drilling rig used...

This data release contains three spreadsheets that have aluminum-26 and beryllium-10 concentrations for samples collected in and near Sparta, North Carolina in 2021-2022. These samples were prepared for burial dating by the Reston Cosmogenic Nuclide (RECON) Lab and measured via accelerator mass spectrometry at the Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement (PRIME) Lab. The file “Sparta_SiteLocations_Odom.csv” contains site locations and interpreted ages; measurements of aluminum-26 and beryllium-10 and related data are located in respective .csv files.

This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the Carlisle 30 x 60 minute quadrangle in Pennsylvania. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter resolution lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2019 and 2020 and downloaded from the USGS National Map TNM Download. The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data is projected in WGS 1984 Web Mercator. This representation illustrates the terrain as a hillshade with contrast adjusted to highlight local relief according to a topographic position index (TPI) calculation.

Iron oxide-apatite (IOA) deposits of the Adirondack Mountains of New York locally contain elevated REE concentrations (e.g. Taylor and others, 2019). Critical to evaluating resource potential is understanding the genesis of the IOA deposits that host the REE-rich minerals. As part of this effort, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting bedrock geologic mapping, geochronology, geochemistry, and geophysics in the region. Published and ongoing research demonstrates the spatial association of IOA deposits with the Lyon Mountain Granite Gneiss (LMG), so understanding the relationship of the LMG to the IOA deposits is important for resource evaluation—however the age and origin of the LMG remain contentious. As...

This data release includes 40Ar/39Ar collected at the U.S. Geological Survey for samples from the Janub Metamorphic Complex in Southern Jordan. Rock samples were collected by Hind Ghanem of the University of Jordan. Muscovite-rich microcores were drilled from a polished thick section of a deformed granitoid and analyzed by argon geochronology at the U.S. Geological Survey Bascom ARgon Dating (BARD) Laboratory in Reston, Virginia. The 40Ar/39Ar data constrain the timing of formation of the foliation defined by muscovite.

This dataset was created as part of the USGS Afghanistan Project investigating artisanal and small-scale mining activity. Clay mining for brick making purposes represents a small but important segment of the mineral extraction industry in Kabul, Afghanistan. Over the past several decades Kabul has grown from a relatively small city, with a 1970 population of less than 500,000 people, to a sprawling urban center with approximately 4.2 million people in 2020 (CIA 2020). Population growth has expanded the need for housing, commercial, and industrial buildings, and associated infrastructure. This has greatly increased demand for bricks, the primary construction material of the region. In this study, very high-resolution...

We have constrained the age of the Nussbaum Gravel at Baculite Mesa, CO using cosmogenic Al-26/Be-10 isochron burial dating. Two samples, a coarse sand and a fine gravel, were prepared for burial dating at the Reston Cosmogenic Nuclide (RECON) Lab and measured via accelerator mass spectrometry at the Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement (PRIME) Lab. The results of this work are summarized in the file “BaculiteMesa_SiteLocation_Odom.csv”, which contains site data and burial age calculations; measurements of aluminum-26 and beryllium-10, as well as related data, are located in respective .csv files. We calculated respective minimum and maximum burial ages for the sand (1.25 ± 0.08 Ma and 1.66 ± 0.12 Ma) and gravel (1.44...

The refractory nature of zircon to temperature and pressure allows even a single zircon grain to preserve a rich history of magmatic, metamorphic, and hydrothermal processes. Isotopic dating of micro-domains exposed in cross-sections of zircon grains allows us to interrogate this history. Unfortunately, our ability to select the zircon grains in a heavy mineral concentrate that records the most geochronologic information is limited by our inability to predict internal zonation from observations of whole zircon grains. Here we document the use of a petrographic microscope to observe and image the photoluminescence (PL) response of whole zircon grains excited under ultraviolet (UV) light, and the utility of this PL...

This data release contains whole-rock geochemical analyses from drill cores and cuttings of pre-Middle Jurassic basement rocks that are buried beneath Coastal Plain sedimentary deposits in Florida and Alabama. The analyses were acquired to support geologic mapping and characterization of little-known coastal-plain basement rock units for topical studies as in geochronology, and applications ranging from mineral, energy, and water resources to earthquake hazards. These samples provide rare insights into deeply buried rocks that have no surface exposures and no known exposed correlates. The 70 whole-rock samples from drill cores and cuttings were selected and described by Ryan Deasy (USGS) and analyzed for major and...

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

This data release includes electron 40Ar/39Ar collected at the U.S. Geological Survey for samples from the Day Nui Con Voi metamorphic massif, Vietnam. Rock samples were collected by Meng-Wan Yeh, Michael J. Kunk and Robert P Wintsch in 2011. Mineral separates were prepared and aliquots of amphibole, muscovite, phlogopite, biotite, and potassium feldspar were analyzed by the 40Ar/39Ar method at the U.S. Geological Survey Bascom ARgon Dating (BARD) Laboratory in Reston, Virginia. The 40Ar/39Ar data constrain the timing of exhumation of rocks within the massif.
