Background A major focus of the NAWQA Program in its second decade (2002-2013) is on regional- and national-scale assessments of groundwater-quality status and trends in principal aquifers. The U.S. Geological Survey Office of Groundwater has identified 62 principal aquifers in the U.S. ( U.S. Geological Survey, 2003 ). About 1/3 of the Nation's principal aquifers are the focus of water-quality assessments at the regional scale by NAWQA. The NAWQA framework for principal aquifer assessments considers the physical setting of the aquifer, in addition to its susceptibility and vulnerability to contamination. The current information available for the Genesee River and watershed is insufficient to assess if the Beneficial Use Impairment (BUI) delisting criteria for the Rochester Embayment Area of Concern (AOC) can or have been met. BACKGROUND Chemistry data from a group of Adirondack lakes monitored since the mid-1990s indicate that chemical recovery is currently underway and can be attributed to declining deposition loads of sulfate and nitrate in direct response to the 1990 amendment to the Clean Air Act (CAA) and other regulations. Changes in the water quality of several western Adirondack streams suggest that chemical recovery from acidification is underway as well, while data from recent large-scale stream surveys also support the assertion. More than 90% of the Pacific population of Steller’s eider (Polysticta stelleri) spends a portion of the fall in Alaska during fall wing molt and staging period, mostly along the Alaska Peninsula. The long-term Steller’s eiders counts from fall emperor goose surveys have shown declines at Izembek Lagoon and Port Heiden and approximate stability at Seal Islands and Nelson Lagoon (1992-2015, USFWS unpubl. data). From 1995 to 1999, a subset of nest plots were searched twice by field crews to estimate nest detection probability by mark-recapture methods. Over the five years, 30 plots were searched twice and over 2700 unique nests were found. From these data, nest detection probability is estimated using a Huggins-type mark recapture model where individual-level covariate effects of nest and observer attributes were estimated. These estimates are then used to predict nest detection rates in other years based on covariates of nests and observers. Nest detection rates are then applied to annual plot search to estimate nest populations for each species in the sampled area.

The primary objective of this project was to monitor the growth of shorebird chicks by recapturing them from hatch to fledgling in relation to food abundance and weather conditions. In 2014 and 2015, we attempted to estimate the impacts of trophic mismatch by experimentally creating late hatched broods by refrigerating eggs to delay hatch. The Bluestone sculpin (Cottus sp.) is a priority at-risk freshwater fish endemic to the Bluestone River system in Virginia and West Virginia. The species occurs in small, cool streams with gravel and rubble dominated substrates. The taxonomic status of the Bluestone sculpin is unresolved, and its range often overlaps with congeners, with which it may hybridize. To address the conservation status of the Bluestone sculpin, taxonomic analyses are needed to fully describe the species and evaluate the level of hybridization. Additionally, comprehensive surveys and genetic analyses are needed to determine the species range and population connectivity. Locating the species using eDNA may be a viable option.

Information about the amount of habitat needed to support monarchs and how it should be distributed across the landscape will have direct implications for FWS habitat restoration programs. In the St. Croix Wetland Management District (WMD), this information will inform decision making for prioritizing Partners for Fish and Wildlife Projects on private lands as well as upland restoration efforts on WPAs and partner lands. The monarch information gained from this project will be another piece of the ecological puzzle, in addition to waterfowl, endangered species and grassland bird information for landscape-level restoration projects. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Geologic Sections dataset consists of site-specific, large-scale geologic cross-sections (composite sheets). These sections were acquired from VDOT in order to save them from disposal. There are 5,500 geological profiles created for highway construction projects containing extensive core, auger and split-spoon logs at scales of 1:50 and 1:100 providing a unique record of subsurface geological and geotechnical data along roadways throughout Virginia. The thousands of feet of vertical subsurface data represents millions of dollars of investment in data acquisition by VDOT. Summary The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Long Term Monitoring (LTM) network has supported the collection of stream chemistry data in the Catskills since the 1990s. Trends in stream chemistry have periodically been evaluated in these streams but the most recent assessments only extend through the early 2000s. An updated assessment of stream chemistry trends will help evaluate the effects of recent substantial declines in acid deposition during the last decade.
