With many of the world’s migratory bird populations in alarming decline, broad‐scale assessments of responses to migratory hazards may prove crucial to successful conservation efforts. There are six aspects of the Patapsco River’s ecosystem that were examined: anadromous fish, American eels, resident fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, freshwater mussels, and water quality. Each of these aspects is described in a separate chapter that includes a brief review of literature followed by a discussion of results from Patapsco monitoring. During the migration period, birds must find habitat where they can stop, rest and replenish their energy reserves. Conservation efforts are increasingly focused on identifying stopover sites that are important for sustaining migratory landbird populations.
