As part of a research study in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin National Training Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) evaluated unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from a borehole for a newly drilled monitoring well near a dry well and Four-plex baseball field. Cores were continuous from land surface down to 240 feet below land surface and were drilled by consultants to EPA using sonic rotary–a fluidless drilling technique. As part of a larger groundwater research study conducted at the U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC), located approximately 35 miles north-northeast of Barstow, California, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have cooperated to evaluate unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from the borehole for a newly drilled monitoring well (ESW2B). Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were done northwest of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards Air Force Base. ERT surveys were done at four locations in May through June of 2018 to refine the understanding of the bedrock-alluvial aquifer transition zone downgradient from the AFRL. The ERT technique injects direct-current electricity with known voltage and current into the earth using a series of electrodes and measures the resulting resistivity. Time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) surveys were done northwest of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards Air Force Base. TEM surveys were done at 33 locations between May and October 2018 to refine the understanding of the bedrock-alluvial aquifer transition zone downgradient from the AFRL. TEM surveys (also called transient electromagnetic surveys) provide 1D resistivity soundings of the subsurface, which can be related to lithology and hydrogeology. The Santa Clara River Lakes, located along the San Andreas fault 19 miles northwest of Palmdale, California, were placed on the state’s “303(d) List” or “Impaired Water List” in 1996 for eutrophic conditions, high pH, and low dissolved oxygen. In 2016, the state adopted a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the Santa Clara River Lakes. This study focuses on the largest of the three lakes, Lake Elizabeth, which is surrounded by the unincorporated town of Elizabeth Lake, CA. The U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC), approximately 35 miles north-northeast of Barstow, California, obtains all of its potable water supply from three groundwater basins (Irwin, Langford, and Bicycle Basins) within the NTC boundaries. In these basins, groundwater withdrawals exceed natural recharge, resulting in water-level declines. However, managed aquifer recharge using recycled water (treated wastewater) has offset water-level declines in Irwin Basin. Additionally, localized water-quality changes have occurred in some parts of Irwin Basin as a result of human activities (for example, wastewater disposal practices, landscape irrigation, and (or) leaking pipes). Cone penetration data reported by Pacific Gas and Electric Company are reported here in support of a U.S. Geological Survey background study on hexavalent chromium concentrations in Hinkley Valley, California. Cone penetration tests are a minimally invasive direct push method of measuring subsurface properties, primarily related to soil friction and resistance to penetration. These data can be interpreted to provide information on soil types and behaviors.

This page presents water levels measured by consultants in six wells in Hinkley, California, between 2017-2018. Water levels were taken in coordination with quarterly sampling done by Blaine Tech personnel for the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Water levels from these wells are reported here in support of a U.S. Geological Survey study on background concentrations of hexavalent chromium.
