In 2021, the California Geological Survey was awarded a grant (G21AP10259-00) in part to conduct digitization of historical mineral resource zonation and geologic maps of Open File Report 85-15, Mineral Land Classification of the Northern Part of The Kingman 1 x 2 degree Quadrangle, San Bernardino County, California. This project is supported in part by funding from the USGS NGGDPP which aims to convert historical paper geologic reports and maps into digital formats, among other data preservation activities. This report was chosen because of its proximity to the Mountain Pass Rare Earth Element Mine and ongoing mapping by the CGS as part of an EarthMRI funded project in the New York Mountains.

The Upper Mississippi River Restoration-Environmental Management Program (UMRR-EMP) partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Region 3 to collect 2010 digital color infrared (CIR) aerial photography of Pools 1-13, Upper Mississippi River and Pools Alton–Marseilles, Illinois River at 8”/pixel and 16”/pixel respectively using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS439 digital aerial camera. The photography shall be at a minimum accuracy of 5-10 meters and allow for the development of orthorectified photo mosaics by U.S. Geological Survey – Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (USGS-UMESC) for all or portions of the coverage area. The flights occurred during times of peak vegetation biomass, typically from...
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) Program Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element has overseen the collection, processing, and serving of bathymetric data since 1989. A systemic data collection for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) was completed in 2010. Water depth in aquatic systems is important for describing the physical characteristics of a river. Bathymetric maps are used for conducting spatial inventories of the aquatic habitat and detecting bed and elevation changes due to sedimentation. Bathymetric data is widely used, specifically for studies of water level management alternatives, modeling navigation impacts and hydraulic conditions, and environmental...

To describe calling activity of Pseudacris crucifer in relation to temperature, precipitation, and wetland water levels, we programmed an acoustic recorder (Wildlife Acoustics) to sample seasonal amphibian calls remotely at study site SC4DAI2 in the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway from 2008 to 2012. We programmed the recorder to sample for five minutes at the top of every hour of every day from late winter/early spring through late summer. We used the Songscape option in Songscope software to generate annual summaries of all of our acoustic samples from SC4DAI2. These summaries included a median dB level for each prescribed frequency within each recording. Pseudacris crucifer, the spring peeper, inhabited SC4DAI2...

From 1994-1997 I surveyed breeding birds and sampled vegetation at 391 random points on UMR floodplain forest along a latitudinal gradient to characterize bird assemblages and associations with gradients in forest structure at the local survey point and land cover composition within 200m radius of survey points (landscape scale). We conducted 10 minute 50m fixed radius point counts (Ralph et al. 1993) to survey birds during the breeding period between 30 May and 10 July in all years. We sampled the southernmost pool (13) first and then progressed to each pool in succession northward, finishing in Pool 4, sampling each point once a season. Surveys were conducted from 30 minutes before to five hours after local sunrise....

Data set includes water Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, and δ18O for the Upper Mississippi River and tributaries and otolith Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, and δ18O data from bigheaded carp collected in pools 19-21 of the Upper Mississippi River. Abstract from manuscript: Knowledge of environments used during early life history and movement patterns of Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and Silver Carp (H. molitrix), collectively termed bigheaded carps, in the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) would be valuable for informing control measures to limit further population expansion and impacts of these species. Lock and Dam 19 (LD19) is a high-head dam on the UMR that delineates downriver areas where bigheaded carps are well-established from upriver...

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were done northwest of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards Air Force Base. ERT surveys were done at four locations in May through June of 2018 to refine the understanding of the bedrock-alluvial aquifer transition zone downgradient from the AFRL. The ERT technique injects direct-current electricity with known voltage and current into the earth using a series of electrodes and measures the resulting resistivity. This technique is generally limited to investigations of aquifer properties less than 100 meters below land surface. Data from other geophysical techniques co-located with the ERT data, including time-domain electromagnetics and horizontal-to-vertical...

Time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) surveys were done northwest of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards Air Force Base. TEM surveys were done at 33 locations between May and October 2018 to refine the understanding of the bedrock-alluvial aquifer transition zone downgradient from the AFRL. TEM surveys (also called transient electromagnetic surveys) provide 1D resistivity soundings of the subsurface, which can be related to lithology and hydrogeology. In the TEM method, electrical current is cycled through a transmitter loop (Tx) wire, which in turn produces a primary magnetic field. When the current is abruptly terminated, a secondary magnetic field is induced in the earth, and it moves downward and...

This dataset is an inventory of orphaned mineral mine sites as well as closeout permitted mineral mine sites. Orphaned mineral mine sites are those that were never permitted in the state of Virginia. In 1978, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) required operatrors to obtain a permit to operate a mineral mine site in Virginia. Mineral mines are considered any mine that is non-coal. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), through its Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Reclamation Program, addresses the hazards and environmental degradation posed by these legacy coal mine sites.

The Arkansas Geological Survey (AGS) is the curator for the Norman F. Williams Well Sample Library and maintains well cuttings and core samples as a permanent record of rock strata that have been penetrated by wells drilled in Arkansas. Driller logs housed at the Survey contain the down hole information about the geology in the state. Each log gives the depth in feet along with the discription of material being drilled and the depth it accurs. The logs cover wells drilled in the early 1900’s to 1950’s and dispersed throughout the state giving statewide subsurface information.
