A collection of well cuttings from the State of Indiana with a few from surrounding states. The well cuttings are filed in small envelopes identified with pertinent information and are stored in boxes in the basement of the Indiana Geological Survey. Each box has a file number which links it to other types of information. In addition to the archived cuttings, 80% of the cuttings are mounted on lithologic strip logs. The cuttings are glued on the strip log according to their correct depth. This gives the user the option to look at either the strip log or the actual well cuttings. There are 13,455 archived wells in the Indiana Geological Survey rock cuttings collection. This collection takes up approximately 15,000...

This is a collection of over 14,000 physical sediment samples that accompany the gamma-ray logs. There are an estimated 2168 sample sets. The samples are stored in whirl bags labeled with the unique gamma-ray log number and depth of sample. The bags are stored in core boxes labeled with the unique gamma-ray number and range of depth. The number of samples per log primarily depends on the depth of the log. Due to poor original storage methods many samples were lost, therefore there are close to 800 gamma-ray logs without available physical samples.

This collection consists of glass microscope slides (1"x3") on which is glued a thin slice of rock ~3cm long, 2cm wide, and 0.003cm thick. At this thickness, most minerals are transparent, so they can be easily seen and studied in great detail. The slides are numbered and filed in special slide boxes located in the basement of the Indiana Geological Survey. The numbers correspond to a listing with pertinent information about the well itself, such as county, location, farm name, number, operator's name, etc. The listing is found next to the slide boxes. Also included is the number of the core from which it came. There are 11 boxes (5.5"x10") of slides with supporting documentation.

These are crushed coal samples collected by Indiana Geological Survey coal geologist from Indiana coal mines and borehole locations. They represent various coal beds of the Pennsylvanian age. They are usually crushed to 0.8 mm size for mineral analysis and vitrinite reflectance measurements. Plastic jars of 100ml volume.

State Geologist Charles Deiss (1945-1959) combined the efforts of the Indiana Geological Survey and Indiana University Department of Geology shortly after the start of his tenure, establishing subject-specific research sections within the Survey. This collection contains crushed rock specimens created for use in various analyses, including X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, by members of the Geochemistry Section from 1947-1994. Specimen sources varied but primarily came from bedrock cores in the IGWS core library. Specimens are currently organized by sample ID.

This is a collection of well cores from the state of Indiana with a few from surrounding states. There are 1,084 cores filed to date at the Indiana Geological Survey. This translates into approximately 34,098 boxes and 202,744 feet of core in the building, which is at capacity. The core in this collection is variable with different diameters. Some are filed whole, halved, and quartered. Some of the cores are sawed which gives a very smooth surface as opposed to a raw surface when the core is split.

A lithologic strip log is a long paper board strip that is representative of the well cuttings produced by drilling. This is done by gluing the cuttings at the correct depth on the strip log. The logs are then filed in cabinets by section, township, and range. This extensive collection is unique to the Indiana Geological Survey. The strip can be easily viewed under the microscope. The well cuttings can be pulled to get a better look if greater detail is needed.
