These slides of the July 22, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Jim Vallance was in a U.S. Forest Service fixed wing aircraft and Mike Doukas, Harry Glicken, and Rick Hoblitt were in a U.S. Geological Survey helicopter. Slide description and index card: At Coldwater II observation station, a scientist (back to camera near rear of vehicle) uses a laser ranging instrument to measure distances to reflector targets on the northern side of Mount St. Helens, including the unstable bulge around (left and center parts of the mountain as viewed here). Dogs Head is on the skyline to the right of the tree, and Goat Rocks, the lava dome that formed during an eruptive period in the 1840s is directly above the rear of the vehicle. Trailer at right.
