After each survey, camera memory cards are downloaded and organized into folders by YEAR, SURVEY, CAMERA, BATCH, PHOTO#. Then, files are renamed to give every file in every survey and every year a unique name. Naming convention consists of: survey name, survey year, month and day, survey number, camera number, batch number, photo number. Thus, all photo names will follow the convention: STO18_1004_S1C1B1_0237.JPG which in this case = STEI Overhead in 2018, Month & Day, Survey#, Camera#, Batch#, Image#. In 1957, Henry (Hank) Hansen and Jim King identified important habitat for molting geese in an area now referred to as the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area (TLSA) in northern Alaska. Located within the larger National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-AK), the importance of this habitat was reaffirmed by the Secretary of Interior in 1977 with the designation of the TLSA. In 1976, the Waterfowl Department of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Migratory Bird Management-Alaska (MBM-AK) began conducting aerial goose surveys within an area of the TLSA that they designated as the Traditional Survey Area. This multi-layer GeoPackage (“VCF_AnalysisStrata”) contains density layers that stratify spectacled eiders into low, medium, and high density classes on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone over two time periods: 1985-1994 and 1995-2015. The (“SPEI_1985to1994_6strata”) and (“SPEI_1995to2015_6strata”) layers were created using ground-based nest data that was log-transformed, interpotated by ordinary kriging methods, and classified into low (0-1.60 km^2), medium (1.60-3.50 km^2), and high (>3.50 km^2) nest density classes. This GeoPackage contains the analysis strata ("YKG_AnalysisStrata") used in calculating population indices for geese, swans, and cranes. This layer was created from the file ("YKD_DesignStrata") when the existing rotating panel design was developed in 1999. This layer was originally created as an ArcInfo coverage, saved to a shapefile, and imported to SQLite Database format.

This collection of reports are summaries of annual aerial surveys of molting geeze conducted near Teshekpuk Lake beginning in 2003. Annual reports completed for surveys conducted prior to 2003 are not in digital format. To access to these, please contact Migratory Bird Management-Alaska Region Waterfowl Department (USFWS) directly. Because not all reports were completed within the same year as the corresponding aerial surveys, file naming format for each report was standardized to: [YYYY] _ [author] _ [(coauthor)] _ briefDescription. This R code uses the nest card data (“Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv”), cumulative observer experience data (“cumnest.csv”), and the output from the detection model to produce nest population estimates for focal species or species groups. Model results used are the the maximum likelihood estimates and covariance matrix from Program Mark for “model 7” or from a Bayesian posterior distribution based on a generalized linear mixed model for detection with random effects for plot, year, and crew. The Spectacled Recovery Plan identified annual nesting surveys as the primary method to assess recovery status for Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) subpopulation. In addition to documenting population status for spectacled eiders, the survey provides annual information on egg production, nesting effort, phenology, and habitat use for three other focal species including cackling geese, emperor geese, and greater white-fronted geese. There are four kinds of observers that will be examining photos for birds, and four separate datasheets will contain results from these observers for each survey. The first observer, ‘PRI’ = the primary observer, looks at all photos taken and records bird presence/absence. The ‘SEC’ = the secondary observer, speciates the birds found by the primary observer, and counts the Steller’s eiders. This is a collection of datasets that are comprised final MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial survey data. Using R code produced by Brad Shults (files ending in .Rmd found in ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’), these data were produced from the raw survey data (‘raw_data’); some quality control was completed using this GitHub R code, though some columns of these datasets still contain errors and these data are not tidy. However, these data are used to produce figures and tables in annual reports so no further tidying or quality control was conducted for these data. Additional details can be found in entity and domain data dictionary definitions.

This is the raw nest card data as transcribed from the hard copy nest cards used in the field, 1985 to 2019. No attempt has been made for quality control on these data. These data are quality control using the R code in the file ‘Nest_Cards_QC.R’ to produce the data used for population estimate in file ‘Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv’. These data should not generally be used or distributed other than when the quality control process is revised and downstream data file need to be recreated (i.e., information is needed from these raw data that is not represented in the quality control files).

The Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey provides data on distribution, abundance, and trend of 33 bird species that nest in northern Alaska. This is the GeoPackage (“TMG_AdditionalAreas.gpkg”) that contains the layer (“main.TMG_NewAreas”) depicting the spatial extent of the four Additional Survey Areas that are assessed during the annual MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial surveys.
