Defenders staff, contractors and Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative partners will build a portal on the Conservation Registry to visualize landscape scale plans and conservation projects that address the priorities of the program. The portal will integrate with GN LCCs existing project management tool, LC Map, to spatially display plans within the geographic area of the LCC, provide information about the plans, and link to planning documents. services and/or data imports will be programmed to facilitate efficient transfer of project data from LC Map and other agencies and organizations into the Registry. FY2012Objectives: Coordination with Heart of the Rockies (HotR) staff to identify focal area,...

FY2014This projects main goals are to assess the effects of grazing by feral horses and livestock on Greater Sage-grouse demography and habitats. The Sheldon-Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge Complex and adjacent lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management provide the unique opportunity to assess sage-grouse populations free of feral horses and livestock grazing, populations that only have feral horses, as well as populations that coincide with both livestock grazing and feral horses. The project team will:1)Use historical sage-grouse data collected from Hart Mountain before and immediately after livestock were removed in the early 1990s, and historical data from Sheldon before the irruption of feral horses...

The Western Governors Association has sponsored an assessment of crucial habitats which will be used for the evaluation of landscape-scale energy, land use, and transportation projects. At present, this assessment does not incorporate ecological integrity or stream-network connectivity into its assessment of aquatic habitats. This proposal will address in both Oregon and Washington states the need to incorporate ecological integrity and stream network connectivity into the Western Governors assessment of aquatic crucial habitats.FY2012Objectives:To incorporate ecological integrity and stream-network connectivity into the Western Governors assessment of aquatic crucial habitats for Oregon and Washington. The resulting...

Existing stream temperature data were compiled from numerous federal, state, tribal, and private sources to develop an integrated regional database. Spatial statistical models for river networks were applied to these data to develop an accurate model that predicts stream temperature for all fish-bearing streams in the US portion of the GNLCC. Differences between model outputs for historic and future climate scenarios were used to assess spatial variation in the vulnerability of sensitive fish species across the GNLCC.FY2011Objectives: Develop a regional stream temperature model that incorporates important climate drivers, wildfire/riparian conditions, and geomorphic factors; Use the model to understand and predict...

This project is part of an ongoing effort to develop and implement a landscape level decision support system (DSS) across the boundaries of Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Montana. The project will strengthen public understanding in the use of objective and scientific fish and wildlife data and predictive modeling for purposes of developing geospatially-based landscape science to inform conservation and development actions. The project will inform, educate, and garner public and user support of the DSS upon its public release, aid in the development and use of the DSS web interface based on customer input and preferences, and provide communications strategies, tools, messages, forums, and feedback for improving public...
